There is growing interest amongst the researches about this group of organisms because these are promising sources of biologically active agents. They are potential sources of novel natural products for scope of utilization in the pharmaceutical industry, agriculture, and in environmental applications. Many researches have proven that endophyte in new and potential source of novel natural products for exploitation in modern medicine, agriculture and industry. So far, a great number of novel natural products possessing antimicrobial activities have been isolated from endophytes. It is believed that screening for antimicrobial compounds from endophytes is a promising way to overcome the increasing threat of drug resistant strains of human and plant pathogen. Antimicrobial metabolites isolated from endophytes belong to diverse structural classes, including: alkaloids, peptides, steroids, terpenoids, phenols, quinones, and flavonoids. These would provide the opportunity to utilize endophytes as a new source for production of antibiotics.","PeriodicalId":122617,"journal":{"name":"NBU Journal of Plant Sciences","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132529005","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Qualitative screening suggested acetone, methanol, ethanol and ethyl acetate to be the most potent solvent for various phytochemical extractions like flavonoid, tannin, steroid, diterpenes, terpenoids, coumarin, cardiac glycoside, saponin, protein and reducing sugar. The highest percent of radical scavenging was recorded in cold water extracts (5mg/ml) i.e. 91.10% and was at par with 93.40% percent scavenging activity of ascorbic acid taken as standard (5mg/ml). Methanol, acetone, ethanol and ethyl acetate gave the best results with the total phenol content value (GAE) recorded as 100.60mg/g, 87.07mg/g, 58.73 mg/g and 51.47mg/g respectively with methanol giving the best result. Acetone extracts (5mg/ml) showed higher ferric reducing power with IC, value 426.45+ 1.12 μg/ml compared to the standard (ascorbic acid) 270.35-0.66 μg/ml. Our findings suggest that the polar solvents were more beneficial and potent against the other non polar counterparts during phytochemical extraction but the polarity of solvents need not be in increasing order since we can assume from our results that acetone being less polar than ethanol, methanol and water showed better results. In addition to different polarities, state of the sample and extraction technique is also crucial for better extraction.","PeriodicalId":122617,"journal":{"name":"NBU Journal of Plant Sciences","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132789309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These degraded soils can be remediated by using heavy metal resistant microorganisms. Zinc has been usually reported in high concentration from coal mine spoils. The present study, therefore, deals with screening of Zinc, resistant bacteria isolated from coal mine spoils. The bacterial isolates were isolated from coal mine spoils of Tinsukia district of Assam. For the isolation of bacteria, King's B Medium and Pikovskaya's Agar Media were used. Heavy metal resistance of the bacterial isolates against zinc was tested on nutrient agar and sucrose-minimal salt low phosphate (SLP) medium. The results showed that out of the 20 test isolates 11 isolates were resistant. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranged from 0.001 M to 0.02 M. Antibiotic resistance was studied for two most resistant isolates. The optimal growth conditions with reference to pH and temperature of the two most resistant bacterial isolates were evaluated. Growth pattern of the most resistant isolates was determined in different concentrations of zinc amended broth media. On the basis of cultural and biochemical characters, the resistant isolates were identified as Pseudomonas sp, Bacillus sp and Rhizobium sp. Some of these isolates also exhibited plant growth promoting (PGP) traits and phosphate solubilizing ability.","PeriodicalId":122617,"journal":{"name":"NBU Journal of Plant Sciences","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130784809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Effective and efficient management of the crop disease is generally achieved by the use of synthetic pesticides. These pesticides cause deleterious effects on human health and biosphere. Amendments (Neem cake, oil cake, cow dung, rabbit manure and chicken manure) were used in tomato seedlings to observe growth promotion increase in healthy and treated tomato seedlings of two varieties, Shrijana and Patam. Results revealed that growth of the tomato seedlings was significantly increased following amendment with neem cake and oil cake in the treated Fusarium oxysporum f sp. lycopersici inoculated plants than in untreated uninoculated plants as recorded. Oil cake had better effect than neem cake manure. It has been observed that the growth of tomato seedlings increased in untreated inoculated than treated inoculated tomato seedlings. Among cow dung, rabbit manure and chicken manure, chicken manure gave better growth of tomato seedlings than that of rabbit manure and cow dung. Similarly effective integrated management practices against Fusarium oxysporum f sp. lycopersici were also developed using neem cake, oil cake, aqueous bulb extract of Allium sativum, bio-control agent like Trichoderma harzianum and calixin (0.0125%) in vivo. Combination with cow dung, neem cake, oil cake, chicken manure and rabbit manure, disease reduction were insignificant. However, combination with neem cake and oil cake showed 64.4% disease incidence, whereas in oil cake, neem cake and Allium sativum in combination disease incidence were recorded 10.1%. Under pot culture conditions T. harzianum alone and in combination with neem cake, oil cake and Allium sativum provided best effective management practices of Fusarium wilt in all the three modes of application viz., simultaneous, repeated and post infection.","PeriodicalId":122617,"journal":{"name":"NBU Journal of Plant Sciences","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117323680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They have been tested for the ability to solubilize rock phosphate in vitro and production of acid in the medium. Almost all the strains solubilized rock phosphate which ranged up to 45.5%. Azotobacter sp. R12 was found to be a potent one, which solubilized 30 to 46% phosphate from different rock phosphates. Almost maximum solubilization of P and acid production was achieved at four days of growth of the organism. The strain produced ascorbic acid in the culture medium, the primary cause of rock phosphate solubilization. Addition of (NH4)2S04 in the culture medium reduced the solubilization of phosphate with increasing concentration beyond 0.25 mg/ml for Jordon rock phosphate. Increasing concentration of CaCl2 and CaCO3 also reduced the P solubilization from Jordon rock phosphate by the strain. Kinetics of solubilization and acid production showed a linear relationship till the 5th day of incubation, then P level becomes static. Adding EDTA at 5 mg/ml as chelating agent of calcium ions to 5 days old culture increased the P solubilization to 81%. Increasing EDTA concentration in 3 days old culture showed linear relationship between concentration of EDTA and P solubilization.","PeriodicalId":122617,"journal":{"name":"NBU Journal of Plant Sciences","volume":"53 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123626091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the present study, growth temperature profile and enterotoxin production potental of 144 strains of Bacalus cereus isolated from milk and dairy products were investigated. Out of them, 107 (74.36) were able to grow at s7 oC. Presence of such a large number of psychrotolerant/psychotrophic strains in dairy environment is of major concern mainly because of their potential for growth, spoilage and ton production in chilled products. Out of 144 isolates, 134 (93%) exhibited haemalysis. While 98% of the solates from milk and 899% from. cheese were positive for diarhoeal enterotoxin, all the isolates from milk powder, ice cream, paneer and butter were positive. The present study was undertaken on artificially induced water stress of maize in vitro, where stress was applied with PEG-6000 on one week old seedlings of four varieties BN 10, Dhanya. Kaveri-Super 244, and Swarna for 3, 5 and 7 days. The activity of antioxidative enzyme like peroxidase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione reductase and superoxide dismutase was assayed in the stressed and control plants. Peroxidase activity decreased on the 7th day in Dhanya and Swarna but in BN 101 and Super 244 the activity decreased slightly on the 5th day and increased again on the 7th day. Ascorbate peroxidase and superoxide dismutase showed a similar trend where the activity decreased after a certain period of stress. Similar trend was seen for GR activity too in case of Dhanya and Swarna. But in BN 101 and Super 244 there was an increase in the activity with the increase in the period of stress. Catalase activity declined during stress in Dhanya and Swarna while the other two varieties showed an increase during stress. Other than enzymatic activities, various biochemical analyses like proline, ascorbate, chlorophyll was also carried out. With the increase in intensity of drought there was an increase in both proline and ascorbate content in all. A significant increase in the ascorbate content was observed in BN 101 and super 244, H202, accumulation and lipid peroxidation showed an increase during stress in Dhanya and Swarna but no increase was seen in the other two varieties. Chlorophyll content showed a decline during the period of drought when compared to the control plants of all varieties. Enzymatic activity and biochemical tests show that Dhanya and Swarna are susceptible to drought stress than super 244 and BN 101 which are the tolerant varieties.","PeriodicalId":122617,"journal":{"name":"NBU Journal of Plant Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130900684","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
