To overcome this difficulty, we propose a new paradigm where future CDNs are to be deployed over a leased server infrastructure. This paradigm shift changes the object placement problem in current CDNs to a combined object placement and resource provisioning problem. In this paper, we present a formulation of this problem, which is a combinatorial optimization, and prove its NP-hardness. We also present a heuristic solution to this problem based on Lagrangian relaxation and subgradient optimization, which also provides error bounds so that the accuracy of the obtained solution can be evaluated. The algorithm has been implemented and tested on a number of randomly generated network topologies, and results have shown promising solution accuracy.","PeriodicalId":122389,"journal":{"name":"The 11th IEEE International Conference on Networks, 2003. When a mobile node moves to a foreign link behind a NAT, it uses a local-scope care-of address, which has been allocated by a foreign router dominating the visited network, as identification of itself. On the other hand, other nodes outside the NAT are going to identify the mobile node by a public care-of address translated into from the local-scope care-of address by the NAT. As each security mechanism running over mobile IPv6 relies on the IP address information, it brings about many critical problems. Therefore, in this paper, we propose some modifications to the legacy mobility messages by just adding single flag to address incompatibilities caused by NAT-deployment. A simple and scalable way of achieving this is to use the differentiated services architecture in conjunction with admission control. In this research, we focus on the reservation of bandwidth by routers on the edge of a single network domain with differentiated services support. We evaluate the assumptions made by previous research on probe-based bandwidth reservation. Network level security, bandwidth, latency and link stability must be considered to select suitable routes for data transmission. Though existing solutions consider bandwidth, latency and link stability to provide QoS routing, network level security is yet to be integrated. While most of this interest is focused on unicast communications, there has recently been an growing focus to suppori multicast communications with mobile sources and, in particular, Source-Specific Multicast (SSM) sources. To address this issue, the Mobile IPv6 specifications currently being developed by the IETF briefly introduce one possible solution known as bi-directional tunneling. In parallel, a set of mechanisms called MSSMSv6 which supports an optimized multicast routing has also been proposed. However to date, there has been no attempt to evaluate the performance of these proposals. This paper therefore aims to compare the efficiency of the IETF solution with the MSSMSv6 scheme in the particular case of Source-Specific Multicast (SSM) mobile sources. A large set of simulations has been produced to evaluate and compare the performance of these two proposals. Close group conferences like meetings, discussions, tele seminars, or consultations need a strictly controlled group membership. Current conference systems achieve this by using a centralized group server as specified in the H.32x standards. Decentralized approaches are scarcely used so far, although they are more flexible. They avoid infrastructure dependencies and single point of failure problems which are often encountered in group server approaches, e.g. in classical virtual private networks. A decentralized conference management requires a consistency support by the underlying communication service. The session initiation protocol (SIP) has become a widely applied protocol to support the signaling of multimedia applications in the Internet It is also applied to support multiparty conference applications. The great majority of these approaches is related to open group and centralized organized conferences. For closed decentralized managed conferences, no solutions have been proposed up to now. The IEEE 802.11 standard has gained the most popularity among the different standards and is currently being deployed both within enterprises as well as being used for public access. One of the weaknesses of the basic medium access in the 802.11 standard is its relatively poor support for real-time traffic. In order to provide this support, the MAC layer implements a Point Coordination Function (PCF). However, since the PCF is based on a centralized polling protocol, some bandwidth is wasted due to the polling overheads and null packets in case the polled stations do not have any data to transmit. In order to reduce the waste and increase the channel utilization this paper presents a modified version of the standard PCF. The modified PCF uses a distributed polling protocol (DPP) as an access mechanism for the uplink transmission. The transmission period in the modified PCF consists of a distributed polling protocol period (DPPP) which is controlled by the DPP and the real-time traffic downlink period (RTDP). The paper further introduces a technique for dealing with the hidden station problem for use together with the proposed modification. This problem occurs when one or more stations misinterpret the status of the medium leading to unforeseen collisions. Using simulation we compare the performance of the modified PCF with the standard PCF when they are used to support voice transmissions. The results show that the modified PCF significantly improves the channel utilization since it can support a higher number of stations than the standard PCF.","PeriodicalId":122389,"journal":{"name":"The 11th IEEE International Conference on Networks, 2003. This measure is based on the notion of unexpected traffic growth and can be used for comparison of topologies. We discuss some advantages and disadvantages of the approach from [Maxemchuk, N et al., May 2002] and suggest some modifications to this approach. In particular we discuss how to evaluate the influence of a subgraph to the lifetime measure and introduce the notion of the order of a path. Applications specify what cryptographic transforms must be applied to incoming and outgoing data frames, and such processing is applied by the operating system itself (exploiting hardware accelerators) when the application sends or receives data. Under this scheme, we can reduce the number of system calls and context switches by 50%, and the amount of data copying by 66%. We describe our prototype implementation for the openBSD system and quantify its performance implications.
