These devices do not support user customization or the introduction of new software applications. Programmable network devices allow for the dynamic downloading of customized programs into network devices allowing for the introduction of new protocols and network services. The Oplet Runtime Environment (ORE) is a programmable network architecture built on a Gigabit Ethernet L3 Routing Switch to support downloadable services. Complementing the ORE, we introduce the JFWD API, a uniform, platform-independent portal through which application programmers control the forwarding engines of heterogeneous network nodes (e.g., switches and routers). Using the JFWD API, an ORE service has been implemented to classify and dynamically adjust packet handling on silicon-based network devices.","PeriodicalId":122125,"journal":{"name":"10th IEEE Workshop on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks. Towards this end, we develop a hybrid error control architecture which takes into account the use of hierarchical video coding. Additionally, the architecture also includes a module which estimates the packet error rate and round trip time observed by the receiver and adjusts the level of redundancy used based on the estimate. By choosing different options in the architecture, we get different error control schemes. In this paper, we investigate the performance of five different error control schemes, namely ARQ, pure FEC, hybrid FEC/ARQ, hybrid FEC/ARQ with priority-dependent redundancy, and adaptive hybrid FEC/ARQ with priority-dependent redundancy. We evaluate the performance of these schemes using MPEG-2 video traces. The results show that pure FEC offers the worst overall performance. The ARQ scheme offers the best performance under low bit error rate and short round trip time, while the priority-aware hybrid FEC/ARQ with or without FEC adaptation offers the best performance under other conditions.","PeriodicalId":122125,"journal":{"name":"10th IEEE Workshop on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks. VoIP in applications for wireless access VoIP在无线接入中的应用

{"title":"VoIP in applications for wireless access","authors":"T. Kanter, C. Olrog","doi":"10.1109/LANMAN.1999.939965","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/LANMAN.1999.939965","url":null,"abstract":"Voice over IP (or VoIP) is a common term to refer to the different protocols that are used to transport realtime voice and video and the necessary signaling by means of the Internet Protocol (IP). H.323 is an ITU-T standard for real-time voice and video communication over packet networks. During the past two years it has become the standard on the Internet for VoIP. Another relatively recent alternative example is SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) for establishing multimedia sessions, that has been adopted as an RFC by the IETF. The cost to transmit digital information end-to-end is dropping dramatically, while there has been a tremendous increase in the available bandwidth. Not only has this been true in backbone networks, it has be-come the trend in access networks for both fixed and wireless access. The price/performance of end-user electronics is dropping while, at the same time, there has been a tremendous increase in computational power. As far as personal communication and mobility is concerned, we are in the position to create new applications and services that go far beyond what telephony systems have been concerned with and able to accomplish. One of the main contributing factors is the Internet Protocol, which allows these new applications to benefit from the fact that end-user devices are now able to use multiple services and events over a single access. The result is that we are now able to build new interactive services, which can combine both voice and data simultaneously.","PeriodicalId":122125,"journal":{"name":"10th IEEE Workshop on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks. Its LAN-like environment enables pre-registered users to communicate with each other using a PC at any time. An STM-based system, which transfers Ethernet frames to/from users' PCs using HDLC (high-level data link control) protocol over ISDN access lines, has already been developed. Access systems that directly provide an Ethernet interface to users such as shared STM-PDS (synchronous transfer mode passive double star) and cable modem systems have recently been introduced. The communication services provided with the current access systems are basically Internet protocol (IP) services. Such access systems will be required to support protocol-free communication services as well as group communication services. We propose a new system architecture that is applicable to many kinds of access systems including shared STM-PDS and cable modem systems. It is based on MAC-over-IP where Ethernet frames from users' PC are encapsulated into IP packets in the edge device and filtered using the PC MAC (media access control) addresses in the center node. This paper describes the system architecture and its operations. The system can provide protocol-free services and guaranteed security to users. The processing load of the center node is reduced by cutting through the decapsulation of MAC-over-IP packets by controlling the ARP (address resolution protocol) packets. Performance evaluation results for a prototype system are presented.","PeriodicalId":122125,"journal":{"name":"10th IEEE Workshop on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks. Selected Papers (IEEE Cat. It is, however not limited to group communication since it provides a rather generic framework. The AMnode design is shaped for the efficient execution of flexible loadable service modules, including dedicated hardware support.","PeriodicalId":122125,"journal":{"name":"10th IEEE Workshop on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks. Specifically the model describes the marginal distribution of aggregate HTTP request rate at the second time scale for the aggregate Web traffic generated by a large number of users accessing the Web. The examination of three independent traces of Web traffic shows that the marginal distribution of HTTP request rate is well modelled by the Polya-Aeppli probability distribution. The Polya-Aeppli result is based on observations that the marginal distribution of active users is Poisson and that the distribution of the number of requests generated by an active user is approximately geometric. The Polya-Aeppli result has immediate application in the estimation of peak HTTP request rates from known mean and variance. The result also highlights a discrepancy between artificial Web traffic workloads used for cache benchmarking based on the Poisson assumption and actual Web traffic.","PeriodicalId":122125,"journal":{"name":"10th IEEE Workshop on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks. With the explosive, growth of the Internet, a challenging issue facing IP multicast is scalability, in particular, the problem of multicast forwarding state and control explosion. In this paper, we propose a new methodology to address the multicast scalability problem for backbone domains Multicast Tunneling with Branch Filtering (MTBF). This multicast group aggregation scheme is designed on top of the inter-domain protocol architecture such as MASC/BGMP, and is independent of any underlying intra-domain multicast protocols. It aggregates multicast groups by constructing Border Router (BR)-based multicast routing trees and forwards data by using an encapsulation technique called Multicast Tunneling (MT). To minimize excess traffic due to aggregate multicast address based data forwarding, an efficient Dynamic Filtering Point Selection (DFPS) algorithm is used. The feasibility and performance of our scheme is demonstrated through analysis and simulations.","PeriodicalId":122125,"journal":{"name":"10th IEEE Workshop on Local and Metropolitan Area Networks.
