Nowadays, though, people are puting more thought into their holidays and eco tourism is on the rise, helping to conserve the environment and improve the wellbeing of local people. On a recent trip to Kenya, I found this out frst hand. We began our eco tour in Kenya's Maasai Mara – one of the largest protected wildlife habitats in Africa and top of many people's bucket lists. Nowhere else in the country is wildlife so abundant. With some six million animals living in the national park, including the \" big fve \" – lions, elephants, bufalo, leopards and rhinoceros – you're guaranteed to spot some magical sights on game drives. We stayed at Mara Engai Wilderness Lodge, a beautiful camp at the top of an escarpment overlooking the vast plains and the perfect base for exploring the Mara Tr iangle Conservancy. Travelling eco-consciously does not mean having to forgo quality, and at Mara Engai accommodation comes in the form of cavernous tented suites, complete with waterfall showers, carved furniture and terraces with breathtaking views. In addition to the exciting twice-daily game drives, the lodge also organises an array of extra-special activities such as sunrise champagne breakfasts, bush barbecues and drinks and canapés while watching the sun set. (\" Sundowners \" will all-too easily become a natural part of your safari experience.) Proving that luxury can still have a big heart, Engai gives much back to its local Maasai communities. While you might question just how frequently the locals would normally perform the tribal dances they entertain guests with, there's no denying the lodge has provided them with jobs and a way of educating Westerners on their traditions. Engai also teaches youngsters trades like carpentry and metalwork in their workshops, and there are even plans to build a clinic and Maasai art gallery. Te property is largely self-sufcient, and the staf will happily show you around the expansive organic garden where the majority of its fruit and veg is grown. In fact, you defnitely won't go hungry on safari – most meals consist of three courses and you'll be amazed by the variety of dishes that can be created in such isolated locations. Less well known but just as special is Kenya's lakes region, a few hours' drive from …","PeriodicalId":120873,"journal":{"name":"The Origins of AIDS","volume":"175 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115468446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
