Methodologies for measuring, predicting and estimating consumptions are being developed in order to assess the environmental impacts during the production. This paper presents a detailed analysis of all energy and material flows for the manufacturing of two different demonstrator products using a bottom-up measurement approach. In order to identify potential savings and to reduce the complexity of the data gathering, an assessment of the main origins of consumptions on the one hand as well as the most resource intensive process inputs on the other hand has been conducted. Based on the initial technology chain and its evaluation, an alternative technology chain with several changes in the processes has been investigated in order to reveal potential savings and demo...","PeriodicalId":119936,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Shape Modeling","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130869419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The trend is towards more customised, intelligent and networked products and systems, integrating intelligence in miniaturised smart product embedded information devices (PEID), such as RFID tags, embedded systems (including sensors) and standards. The overall goal of sustainable manufacturing is to obtain a holistic view of products’ lifecycle in the manufacturing industry and to optimise the life-cycle of product-service systems. In the coming years, the use of PEIDs will be extended from the current use in identification and logistics applications to a wider pallet of applications for manufacturing including real time visualisation and decision making. These wider applications include the involvement of consumers and users together with producers and service providers, beyond the traditional use of current product life-cycle management (PLM) solutions. This paper also describes the project PLANTCockpit for a production and logistics cockpit in manufacturing and specifically focuses on the proposed architecture and the novel concept of KPIs representation.","PeriodicalId":119936,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Shape Modeling","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129452185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since availability of energy has a dramatic influence on production, energy has to be considered a process prerequisite instead of a production-related overhead topic, as usually done. Prospective considerations in MES and ERP systems will need to treat energy as a limited resource just like machine capacity and time. Hence, both products and processes will compete for energy. This paper discusses selected production control tasks, methods, and strategies for discrete part manufacturing. It aims at identifying the extent to which energy features can be implemented next to established logistic goals. Based on first research activities, new approaches were derived in order to develop tools for an energy-sensitive production control focusing on limited capacity of production resources.","PeriodicalId":119936,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Shape Modeling","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126774938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several engineering technologies are utilised: aerodynamics for fin design, mechatronics for power management, materials for thermoelectric and solar film, CAD for the layout, and heat transfer for human comfort. The result is a sustainable design capable of harvesting both solar and wind energies which are converted into electric power for the benefit of the individual carrying it. In windy climates, the Eco-Brella rotates by virtue of a light turbine which causes rotation of a dynamometer. Solar film is shaped into an umbrella-like configuration with efficient power conversion (10%–20% depending on conditions). Generated power is channeled through power management system capable of 1) charging a rechargeable battery from which other batteries of portable electronic devices are charged and/or 2) providing personal thermal comfort by blowing cool (hot) air on hot (cold) days.","PeriodicalId":119936,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Shape Modeling","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121119585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
