In more explicit terms, the paper provides a critical price value such that if secondary access is priced above that value then allowing secondary access is profitable for the licensee as long as the price generates secondary demand. Conversely, if the price does not generate demand then the licensee does not incur any operational cost due to secondary service. At present, analog-to-digital converters can process wide-band signals up to 1GHz and therefore convert it into the digital baseband. To deal with the limited processing power a multicoset sampling filter in the digital domain is introduced. Thus, it is possible to have a fully flexible multiband filter for a wide-band signal with up to 1GHz bandwidth. It integrates models of the channel, mobility, user preference, network operators (providers), infrastructure deployment, user distribution, and price-adaptation mechanisms. Providers aim to maximize their own profit, while clients decide based on criteria, such as the financial cost of the access, transmission rate, and required transmission power. This paper gives a brief description of the modelling framework and a novel price-adaptation algorithm for providers. It presents how this framework can be used to instantiate a cellular-based market in a small city. This paper analyzes the economic impact of cognitive radio with a three-player oligopoly model. The three players represent the three markets of the industry: devices, connectivity and services. We examine how the new technology affects the markets, and how the changes in one market affect the other markets. With the model, it is possible to estimate the players' utilities under different parameters and scenarios. We also present a method to estimate the parameter changes in the model from the technological improvements of cognitive radio. Many problems in traditional radio communication, wireless networking, and cognitive radio are variants of this question. Optimization decomposition based on Lagrangian relaxation of signal quality requirements provides a mathematical framework for solving this type of combined problem. This paper demonstrates the technique as a solution to optimal spatial reuse time-division multiple access (STDMA) scheduling with reconfigurable antennas. The joint beam steering and scheduling (JBSS) problem offers both a challenging mathematical structure and significant practical value. We present algorithms for JBSS and describe an implemented system based on these algorithms. We achieve up to 600% of the throughput of TDMA with a mean of 234% in our experiments. The decomposition approach leads to a working distributed protocol which is provably equivalent to our original problem statement while also producing optimal solutions in an amount of time that is at worst linear in the size of the input. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first actually implemented wireless scheduling system based on dual decomposition. This is true especially in home networking where users are typically not networking professionals and cannot be expected to perform complex optimization and management tasks. In this context, cognitive radio concept combining cross-layer optimization and learning mechanisms is a promising solution. We demonstrate a cognitive home networking prototype, which addresses practical problems users face with the present-day wireless networks at home. The prototype shows how nodes using IEEE 802.11 radios and WARP boards operate under the Cognitive Resource Manager (CRM). The nodes achieve the desired performance by handling network dynamics and controlling parameters taking independent or cooperative decisions and operating in different layers of the protocol stack. This is done using multiple control loops which are supported by the CRM architecture. We demonstrate the use of machine learning for online estimation of network activity patterns to enable more efficient Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) using Hidden Semi-Markov Models (HSMM). In the previous papers, we covered a throughput-greedy cognitive user, and in this paper, we extend those results to devices that care about energy, as well as mixed devices that care about both energy and time. We do this by introducing a ‘singing’ sanction that forces devices to burn energy while they sit in jail. Through this exploration, we see a number of effects coming out: a homeband (which may be an unlicensed band) is required to present an alternative band to legally transmit in when it is difficult to operate legally in the cognitive band. Also, when the primary is very rarely active, it is practically impossible to deter cheating, so alternate policy decisions must be made for these cases. Finally, it is possible to create a singing plus jail sanction that is sufficient to deter bad behavior for all types of devices in all types of situations. Using an individual based simulation environment and a model of spectrum demand for the region of Portland, OR, we study a primary market to allocate spectrum licenses to wireless service providers. A truthful and efficient market clearing mechanism is used to sell the available licenses. A demand estimation model creates spatial and temporal demand estimates for each of the service providers. A valuation system determines the marginal value of each license which is further used in the bidding process. Three different scenarios are considered. First, the entire city of Portland is considered as one region and the estimated demand for this region is used to construct bids. The auction determines the clearing price for each license and the winner of the licenses based on the marginal valuations. After the market clearing is done and license allocations are made, we measure the total cost of licenses to the providers, the amount of unused capacity, and the number of unserved calls. In the second scenario, the city is divided into 2 regions in such a way that the number of call pairs are minimized across regions. Each region is auctioned separately. The providers can now decide their valuations sequentially for each region, so that they can use information on the allocations of the first region to optimally bid in the second region. The same set of measurements are taken again to understand the social impact of this scenario in comparison to the fist one. Finally a third scenario is run which is just like the second scenario but the city is now split into 2 regions in such a way that the call density and population is split evenly between regions. The reliance on study makes spectrum management inefficient. Model-Based Spectrum Management (MBSM) offers more agile spectrum reuse by providing a loose coupler among spectrum management and RF systems. Spectrum consumption models (SCM) capture the intersection of information sharing requirements among spectrum management systems and RF systems. They reveal consumption by capturing the extent of emissions and by defining harmful interference. They are accompanied with well defined computations for assessing compatibility. As a result, generic algorithm rather than prolonged study can be used to quickly arbitrate compatibility and reuse opportunities. SCM is an enabling technology of dynamic spectrum access (DSA) and the models themselves are suitable as a machine readable method to convey policy to DSA systems. They provide a means to manage that policy.
