The dual-band characteristics are achieved using several strip monopole radiators. A small planar inverted-F monopole antenna (PIFMA) is connected to the ground plane. The bandwidth improvement for the antenna is obtained mainly by modifying the geometrical configuration of the strip monopoles added at the antenna and the ground plane. According to the voltage current characteristic of the transmission lines, the fundamental mode or high-order mode can be suppressed by selecting suitable coupling region, whereas the coupling coefficient at desired frequency can be tuned to desired values. Therefore, it is easy to design wide-stopband or oversize bandpass filters. Furthermore, no additional circuit is needed. For demonstration purpose, two planar microstrip filters, and an oversize millimeter-wave filter are presented. The simulated antenna performance inside a human body environment (one-layer skin) includes impedance bandwidth, axial ratio (AR) bandwidth, and radiation are compared and discussed. The dimensions of proposed CP patch antenna and helical antenna are 10×10×1.27 mm3 and π×(5.5)2×3.048 mm3, respectively. In this presentation, we employ active elements into the metamaterial designs and demonstrate several EM wave absorbers based on the metamaterial concept that have controllable EM responses including tunable absorption band, switchable due-band absorption, and switchable operation between absorption and reflection. Both the design procedures and the EM performances will be presented and discussed. The system is designed for operation at a single frequency of 12.6 GHz, which includes one transmitter and an array of 15 receivers that is placed at a far-field under the breast phantom. The breast phantom consists of homogeneous normal breast tissue, a small malignant tumour and skin. The matching solution medium is not necessary in this system. Air is used between the antennas and breast phantom. The bent dipole structure keeps the antenna with compact size and operates the IEEE 802.11 b/g (2.4 ~ 2.484 GHz) application band. In addition, the spiral strip excites higher resonant modes for the purpose of 802.11a (5.1 ~ 5.825 GHz). Beside the dual band application, the overall dimensions 38 × 8 × 0.8 mm3 can be easily applied in small-size portable devices. A switched transconductor mixer embedded with an active balun for the local oscillator (LO) signal is designed. An active balun for RF input signal with a RC parallel network to reduce gain and phase imbalance is proposed. The wideband mode (0.83-2.5 GHz) is based on a folded bowtie dipole while the four narrowband modes are based on a length-reconfigurable thin dipole backed by a rectangular cavity. PIN diodes are used as switches at specific locations for choosing different modes. A fully functional prototype is developed and exhibits good performance. By fixing the patch areas to be the same, radiation performance for these two antennas could be directly compared. Simulated results show that the slot-tail compact design does not give valuable improvements in performance compared with the traditional design. With this result in mind, the authors conclude that the miniaturization trend for CP patch antenna should be application-oriented, which means the system requirement for the CP antenna should come first.
