{"title":"Chapter One. Introduction","authors":"G. Keller, G. Warnecke","doi":"10.7312/rege18012-002","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7312/rege18012-002","url":null,"abstract":"Migration is a global phenomenon, and while the number of people migrating from one country to another has been increasing world-wide, the rate at which it has been doing so is faster in some countries than others. Hong Kong is a ‘city of migrants’ and while it accepts migrants from other countries, for example the Philippines, Thailand and India, the majority of new residents come from Mainland China. Hong Kong has, in fact, been experiencing a particularly high influx of immigrants from Mainland China since 1995 when the ‘One Way Permit’ (OWP) migration scheme was introduced. Under this scheme, up to 150 immigrants per day are permitted to enter Hong Kong from Mainland China. Between 1983 and 2001 alone, a total of over 720, 000 new Chinese arrivals were admitted, the equivalent of almost 11% of the total population of Hong Kong (6.72 million) in 2001 (Hong Kong Special Administrative Region People’s Republic of China, 2002). Among these immigrants from Mainland China, the proportion of females has increased significantly; while they already outnumbered male migrants in 1986 (59%), by 2003 woman accounted for three quarters of all migrants from the Mainland (see Table A.1.1 in Appendix A).","PeriodicalId":119320,"journal":{"name":"Shifting Ethnic Boundaries and Inequality in Israel","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1969-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134360446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
