Adding corrosion inhibitors is an effective method to prevent metal corrosion. In recent years, considerable research progress has been achieved in green corrosion inhibitors for copper, carbon steel and aluminum. However, most works are mainly focused on the effect and efficiency of corrosion inhibitors, the microscopic mechanism of corrosion inhibitors is still unclear. Therefore, theoretical insights in green corrosion inhibitors are especially important. In the present chapter, we will present the advance and perspective on the theoretical study in green corrosion inhibitors. The theoretical studies, including quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR), quantum chemistry, and molecular dynamics simulation on the green corrosion inhibitors for copper, carbon steel and aluminum are reviewed and discussed. Chemical corrosion inhibitors are usually suggested by the corrosion specialists in this regard, which adds an enormous amount of cost to the total materials charges and some are harmful to life forms. Therefore, some green corrosion inhibitors are introduced in this study which are relatively cheaper and holds good compatibility with concrete. We have highlighted the mechanisms of protection, advantages and disadvantages of different green biological corrosion inhibitors by broadly categorizing them into two types. This classification is based on the origin and mechanism of corrosion inhibition of the respective class. The first class is microbial inhibitors which prevent the onset of corrosion by making biofilms and precipitating calcite on steel surface and concrete voids respectively. And the second class is of botanical inhibitors which are the extracts of plants and protect the steel bars by forming biofilms. A pyrazine and its derivatives are most commonly used as a pharmaceutical, food colouring agent and as a corrosion inhibitor. It has chemistry and chemical characteristics due to nitrogen atoms present which can be obtained from both naturally and synthetically. A pyrazine and its derivatives are used effectively in corrosion media to prevent metal and metal alloy from corrosion. Chemical and electrochemical methods are commonly used as corrosion monitoring techniques, in which weight loss EIS and PDP are prominent. Their mixed type of nature has been reported in previously published works. There have also been works on the use of computation calculation in recent works, which include DFT calculation and MD Simulation are the main ones. In view of the toxicity of the inhibitors, the search for an eco-friendly and non-toxic corrosion inhibitor is of great interest. Green corrosion inhibitors are of concern because of increased awareness and improvements in regulations related to the environment because of their toxicity, restrict regular corrosion inhibitors. The extracts of natural products contain compounds having oxygen, carbon, nitrogen and sulfur. Such elements facilitate compounds to absorb on the surface of metal, forming a protective film to prevent corrosion.
