Prior to the test for cointegration, the Modified Granger Causality of the Toda and Yamamoto (1995) was used to test for the causality to be sure that causality indeed runs from land size to land productivity. The Granger Causality confirmed that land size Granger-cause land productivity. Given this result, the semi-log ARDL model was estimated to test for cointegration and also estimate the elasticity of the relationship in both the short and long runs. The result showed that while land size has inverse relationship with land productivity in both the short and long run, its influence in determining yield was only significant in the short run. The Error Correction Term, ECT(−1) which is the speed of adjustment of short-run disequilibrium to long-run steady state was both negative and significant, implying that there is going to be convergence to long-run equilibrium at the speed of about 24%.","PeriodicalId":118277,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Land and Rural Studies","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129994596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The growth of institutional sources of credit was quite dramatic during the first four decades after Independence. There appears to have been a regression since then. There is some evidence to show that land as collateral is a frequent requirement for institutional lenders. There is also some scattered evidence that land is more likely to be used as collateral by larger landholders and a clear title favours extension of loans. However, there are very little data on the extent to which these hypotheses hold well across states. Textual records (copies of Record of Rights) gathered for the construction of the NCAER Land Records and Services Index 2020 offered an opportunity to understand the situation in different states with respect to the issues mentioned above. This article assesses the data gathered for six Indian states/Union Territories (UTs): Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The article highlights the extent to which various hypotheses prevalent in the literature are borne out by the evidence obtained through the sample data gathered for the states/UTs that are the subject of this article. While adding to the knowledge on the subject, it will help enhance an understanding of both the subject and policy making in the area of rural credit.","PeriodicalId":118277,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Land and Rural Studies","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121034073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new method of paddy cultivation (MCD) known as the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) appears to be very useful to paddy cultivating farmers to overcome the issue of water scarcity. SRI has been in practice over the last few years in India, but not many studies have attempted to find out whether the SRI MCD is useful to farmers in terms of saving water and increasing the yield of paddy using data collected from water-stressed tank irrigated area. In this study, an attempt has been made to fill this gap using data collected from a total of 100 sample farmers from a district in Tamil Nadu State. The study shows that SRI farmers can save 41% of water and harvest about 40% of higher productivity than non-SRI farmers. Through saving of water, fertiliser and other inputs, about 22% of the reduction in the cost of cultivation was also realised by SRI farmers. The increased productivity and reduced cost of cultivation, helped the SRI farmers to harvest an additional profit of ₹15,158/acre over the profit earned by the farmers cultivating paddy under the conventional inundation method.","PeriodicalId":118277,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Land and Rural Studies","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123891061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Evidence through this study revealed that the land reform programme at the two farms largely benefited the beneficiaries of the scheme. The resettled farmers have grown in asset ownership due to access to land and have developed social networks to tackle their communities’ challenges. There is, however, a need for further government support and intervention with the intent to make the farmers more self-sufficient. The government could also come in as a facilitator to initiatives by the households themselves to solve their challenges.","PeriodicalId":118277,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Land and Rural Studies","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125639731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Data for the study were collected using structured questionnaire. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data collected. The study showed that 88.8% faced risk from time to time while 5.6% of the respondents often face risk and another 5.6% never experienced risk at all. Diversification (56%) has been the major approach of risk management by respondents in the study area while integration (32%) and forward contracting (11.2%) methods were less employed. The coefficients of age (0.1044) was significant 1%, sex (0.7008) was significant at 5%, Educational level (0.3478) was significant at 1%, access to extension (2.6627) was significant at 1% and agribusiness risk (3.215) was significant at 1%. They were all positive indicating that they have positive relationship with the productivity of farmers. The allocative cost efficiency of risk management among the farmers stands at maximum: 20.57, minimum: 16.28 and mean: 18.55 indicating that the efficient level of production is very low thus demanding adequate management to increase production efficiency. It was recommended that the Government and stakeholders should help the farmers in time of risk to boost their morale for adequate production.","PeriodicalId":118277,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Land and Rural Studies","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125046941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The rudimentary patriarchy of the indigenous communities of the hoary past received a great fillip during the early phase of ‘feudalism from bellow’ by the primary states. It grew at a faster pace in the colonial period, as a result of the privatization of land and religio-cultural impact of the Zamindari system. Presently, the complete exposure to the dominant society of the plains has triggered of a process of complete demolition of the indigenous institutions that upheld women’s economic rights and social status at a much higher level than that of the peasant society of the plains. The government policfy of economic reform and structural change, since the 90s accelerated the process of masculisation of social institutions further. Through this article I had tried to highlight the situation of tribal women in context with economic rights and social status in the society.","PeriodicalId":118277,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Land and Rural Studies","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128238871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Inadequate management of natural resources has affected biodiversity, agriculture productivity and ecological balance. It is necessary not only to conserve the degrading natural resources but also to bring in available culturable wastelands under agriculture after reclamation to achieve required production of food. Salt affected wastelands, waterlogged & marshy lands and undulating lands are the common culturable wastelands found in the Tarai region of Uttar Pradesh. In this study the land use changes have been monitored over a period of 16 years in a cluster of villages in a part of Lakhimpur District, using Google earth imageries and GIS software. An on-screen visual interpretation of satellite imageries of 2003, 2011, 2015 and 2019 to monitor land use changes revealed a decrease in culturable wastelands by 46.19 % and increase in agricultural area from 69.34 % to 83.79 % in a period of 16 years. The progressive farmers have used pressmud, which is readily available from nearby sugar mills for reclamation of culturable wastelands.","PeriodicalId":118277,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Land and Rural Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123660899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It, however, argues that the colonial regime dispossessed peasants and tribals from their means of subsistence primarily to exploit and extract resources in order to expand its unabated political power and retain its industrial growth trajectory in England while the post-colonial regime embarked on massive dispossession to obviate acute indigence of the Indian citizenries by building state-controlled dams and industries for production, and institutions for developing knowledge. The neoliberal regime contrarily aimed to accelerate economic growth largely on capitalist lines. Both colonial and post-colonial regimes partly absorbed the dispossessed labour force in the production processes, whereas neoliberal regime deprioritized its absorption, exemplifying therefore an ‘exclusionary’, non-labour intensive growth model.","PeriodicalId":118277,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Land and Rural Studies","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121910884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study identifies mono-cropping under rain-fed as the dominant farming systems practised and the most vulnerable. Results from the discrete choice model indicate that precipitation, temperature, ownership of heavy-machine, extension service, road infrastructure, distance and membership of farmer-based organisation are major determinants of the adoption of irrigation farming system. The study encourages the promotion of the activities of farmer-based organisations, the empowerment of women and the provision of agricultural extension services.","PeriodicalId":118277,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Land and Rural Studies","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128297796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
