The specific aim of the research is to review and evaluate the spatial and artistic expression of Modern Style (Art Nouveau) architecture objects in the cultural landscape of Lithuania. The analysis is based on data classification of scientific literature, cartographic works and on urban field research. One of the main results of the study is a map of distribution of Modern Style objects in Lithuania, which helps to identify Modern Style architecture areas in morphological regions of Lithuania landscape. The majority of Modern Style building is located in the central areas of Lithuanian cities due to development and specifics of territorial planning of the largest cities in Lithuania in the beginning of the 20th century. To evaluate the spatial expression of Modern style architecture is needed to do a wider research into the aesthetic quality of the landscape.","PeriodicalId":118014,"journal":{"name":"Geografijos metraštis / The Geographical Yearbook","volume":"219 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114743635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mačiulytė","doi":"10.5200/gm.2021.5","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5200/gm.2021.5","url":null,"abstract":"The fate of local communities and rural areas in Europe depended on the transformations of political regimes, people’s ability to develop agricultural resources and economic influence on the development of markets for manufactured goods and agricultural products in rural areas. Lithuania, like many other countries, has undergone profound transformations. The country’s rural areas reflect how local communities adapted themselves to the necessary changes. At the heart of these changes lies the Žagarė cherry which used to be a fruit of luxury in the 18th century Russian Empire; whereas during the Soviet era it became a supplement to the villagers and town-dwellers diet. Our main aim is to understand how nowadays the Žagarė cherry is a symbolic terroir product of a local community which seeks to reshape a local development strategy based on the recaptured past. The Žagarė cherry both rooted in its natural soil and crossed by the history of the district between Joniškis and Žagarė, in its history has known a real reformulation of its territorial inscription. Thanks to local community investment in local development projects, the cherry has become the object of an identity shaped by the cherry festival, a widely recognized cultural and heritage event. The Žagarė cherry has become a territorial resource activated by the local community thanks to a metamorphosis of the resource in a local context.","PeriodicalId":118014,"journal":{"name":"Geografijos metraštis / The Geographical Yearbook","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114832652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is a trend towards mixed-use developments where residents can work, play and sleep without leaving the neighbourhood. This is considered a sustainable urban planning practice, as it reduces the need to travel, cuts greenhouse gas emissions and promotes a sense of connection to the local community. Spatially disjointed activities in cities make long daily commutes inevitable, however would the residents’ behaviour change if such activities were available nearby? This paper puts the new urbanism ideas to test using a case study of a neighbourhood in Vilnius. It examines the extent to which the planning of the neighbourhood creates the necessary conditions for local living, by assessing the local accessibility of services, walkability, and mixed-use zoning","PeriodicalId":118014,"journal":{"name":"Geografijos metraštis / The Geographical Yearbook","volume":"125 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123126941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Burneika","doi":"10.5200/gm.2021.2","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5200/gm.2021.2","url":null,"abstract":"The paper analyzes the spatial differentiation of housing renovation processes in Lithuania and in its metropolitan cities – Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda in particular. Based on scientific, legal, and other literature related to the topic, the study identifies the general features of the Lithuanian housing renovation policy and distinguishes the main factors influencing the spatial differences of housing modernization processes. The analysis carried on secondary statistical data allowed to reveal huge differences of housing renovation at the level of Lithuanian municipalities. The spatial differentiation of renovation does not correspond to existing differences of economic development and incomes of population in municipalities. The territorial differentiation of renovation processes inside Lithuanian metropolitan cities is analyzed in the second part or the paper. The results of the analysis revealed the tendencies of spatial processes of housing policy in the three largest cities of the country. The renovation processes are highly differentiated in urban space and the socially least successful areas have the lowest share of renovated housing stock. The renovation policy has essentially no territorial priorities, therefore it’s impact on urban segregation and urbanized landscape is accidental and potentially negative.","PeriodicalId":118014,"journal":{"name":"Geografijos metraštis / The Geographical Yearbook","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126317268","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is intended for the analysis of the Vėlaičiai (Laties) and other similar place names. According to data from linguists, such place names are derived from personal names. But the root of the word Late does not answer what the personal name means itself. In Lithuanian language the Laties word shares the same root with: late - time of day, the end of a season or ghost - the spirit of a dead person? With which of these meanings could be associated with communities, areas that are still marked in the 19th and 21st century beginning maps? Hypothesis made that if in the past the meaning of such communities or areas would be linked to a world of the dead, in or in the surrounding of them should be some objects from the pre-Christian period. In search for possible connections first the oldest cultural layer - the archeological heritage was analyzed, and then the natural environment of the areas. In total the 29 locations were studied.","PeriodicalId":118014,"journal":{"name":"Geografijos metraštis / The Geographical Yearbook","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131748927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the article, it will also be told about the already \"hidden\" and forgotten small streams of Vilnius, which historically flowed abundantly in the city and its surroundings, provided the city's residents with drinking water, met household needs, and served as defensive fortifications. There is very little historical knowledge about the city’s small streams. Their presence can be judged only by assessing the city's terrain and natural conditions, analyzing old city plans, collecting archival information. With the expansion of Vilnius, important streams were flooded or drained, lost their significance and were forgotten. During the partial reconstruction of the hydrographic network of Vilnius, after studying the lithology of the historical period of the city, a temporary watercourse of Vilnius was discovered based on the location of gravelly rocks. These flows are important because of the fact that the first main streets of Vilnius stretched along their routes. Both now and in the past smaller streams had always had their role and getting to know them is important and necessary in restoring the former image of the city and the perception of the present and past of the times.","PeriodicalId":118014,"journal":{"name":"Geografijos metraštis / The Geographical Yearbook","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124973972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
