The genus Tympanoctomys includes four living species of octodontid rodents that inhabit halophytic shrub steppes of the central-western and south-central of Argentina. Based on the study of bone remains recovered from pellets of birds of prey, we confirmed the presence of this rodent in a perisaline sector of the Dry Chaco of Córdoba. This is the first record of specimens representing current populations of the taxon for the Province, which justifies the need for further studies on the diversity of small mammals in the region.","PeriodicalId":117955,"journal":{"name":"Notas sobre Mamíferos Sudamericanos","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128789657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objectives of this work were to describe the first occurrence of Promops at the state of Rio de Janeiro, to provide data on the acoustic parameters found at Ilha Grande, and to provide schedules of the species’ foraging feeding activity. We had a high capture effort with mist nets, but we did not have any capture of P. centralis, for which we obtained acoustics recordings. We increased the number of species recorded for the state of Rio de Janeiro up to 79. This study reassures the importance of using bioacoustic methods alongside mist nets on fieldwork.","PeriodicalId":117955,"journal":{"name":"Notas sobre Mamíferos Sudamericanos","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126269962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its generalist diet includes plant and animal items, as well as items generated from human activities, such as cultivated fruits. We report the first consumption of plastic by this species in the semiarid region of Brazil, determined by three fragments found in the stomach of a road-killed individual. This finding highlights the problem of inadequate disposal of domestic waste, and the present threat of inorganic material in the food chain.","PeriodicalId":117955,"journal":{"name":"Notas sobre Mamíferos Sudamericanos","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125591941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of signs to identify terrestrial mammal species is a widely used methodology, to indirectly study their presence and abundance in a place. However, identification can often be difficult due to the coexistence of taxonomically close species. Two species of cervids coexist in much of northeastern Argentina, Mazama gouazoubira (G. Fischer [von Waldheim], 1814) and Axis axis (Erxleben, 1777). The objective of this work was to compare the feces of both species to facilitate the identification task in field work. The shape of the feces is similar in both species, however, the size of the feces of M. gouazoubira is significantly smaller than that of A. axis, mainly in the width of the pellets.","PeriodicalId":117955,"journal":{"name":"Notas sobre Mamíferos Sudamericanos","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126536324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The knowledge of the biology of bats in Honduras has increased greatly in the last decade. This is partly due to research conducted in other countries involving species that are also distributed in Honduras, but also due to the work of an emerging group of national researchers interested in the natural history and conservation of bats. The first key for the identification of bat species that occur in Honduras was published in 2016 and included 110 species. Since then, there have been significant advances in the taxonomy and distribution of Honduran bats. Here we present a new key that includes 113 species (112 now confirmed for the country, and one of possible presence), as well as seven additional species that are expected to occur in Honduras.","PeriodicalId":117955,"journal":{"name":"Notas sobre Mamíferos Sudamericanos","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127742253","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Captured at APA Guapimirim, this specimen represents the fifth record for Rio de Janeiro state, raising the number of species known from Brazilian mangroves to 39, most of them being insectivores. The new record may reflect both the difficulty of sampling this species using traditional methods, and the lack of mammalian research in mangroves. Such studies, however, would be important for the conservation of an ecosystem that is constantly under human disturbance.","PeriodicalId":117955,"journal":{"name":"Notas sobre Mamíferos Sudamericanos","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133846600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The record was obtained as part of a carnivore monitoring program in Cerro Guido ranch which started in January 2019, and included 63 camera-trap stations and a sampling effort of 10,422 trap/nights. El gato del pajonal (Leopardus colocolo Molina, 1782) es un pequeño felino sudamericano, de tamaño levemente mayor al de un gato doméstico, de habitos solitarios, crepusculares y nocturnos (Parera 2018). Tiene un peso que varía en estado adulto entre los 3 y 5 kg y habita en áreas de baja elevación con una marcada preferencia por ambientes abiertos como pampas, matorrales y pastizales (Lucherini et al. 2016; Iriarte & Jaksic 2017; Parera 2018). Su distribución se extiende desde Ecuador hasta el estrecho de Magallanes (Iriarte & Jaksic 2017; Parera 2018). En cuanto al límite sur, su presencia ha sido confirmada con escasos registros en la porción argentina de Patagonia (Pereira et al. 2002; Lucherini et al. 2019) y en la Región de Magallanes y la Antártica Chilena, en esta última a partir de dos registros: el primero en cercanías de la localidad de Puerto Prat, aparentemente colectado antes de 1940 y depositado en el Museo Británico de Londres con el número de colección 12.7.12.4 (Pocock 1941; Fig. 1); el segundo, más reciente, corresponde a un animal capturado al norte de la localidad Cerro Castillo en la década de los ’80 (Johnson et al. 1990; Fig. 1), Recibido el 21 de mayo de 2020. En cuanto a su estado de conservación, Leopardus colocolo se encuentra catalogado a nivel internacional bajo la categoría de Casi Amenazado (Lucherini et al. 2016); la misma clasificación está vigente para el territorio chileno (Ministerio del Medio Ambiente 2011) mientras que en Argentina se encuentra catalogado como Vulnerable (Lucherini et al. 2019). El área de estudio se encuentra ubicada en la Región de Magallanes y la Antártica Chilena, 12 kilómetros al este del Parque Nacional Torres del Paine y colindante a la frontera con Argentina, e incluye dos estancias (Estancia Cerro Guido y Estancia Complejo Torres del Paine), que en conjunto abarcan un área total de 135.000 hectáreas (Fig. 1). Las principales actividades económicas en ambas estancias son la ganadería ovina y bovina, además del turismo.
