The harmonics are emitted approximately with the Same efficiency up to orders as high as 143 and to energies as high as 1 XO eV (6 nm). They have the same characteristics as the generating laser: they are collimated, intense, coherent and of short pulse duration. Thus, these phenomena are interesting not only from a basic point-of-view as a probe of the response of an atom to a strong laser field, but also, from a more applied point-of-view, as an interesting soft X-ray source, with specific properties. The radiation can be used in traditional applications in atomic, molecular and solid-state physics, such as lifetime measurements. More “exotic” applications, such as the production of attosecond (subfemtosecond) light pulses, have also been proposed. Both aspects, the understdndillg of the physics of harmonic generation, as well as the applications of this new XUV radiation source will be reviewed. 09:OO JFAP (Invited) Recent Progress of Nonlinear ShortPulee Tunable W V and XUV Generation","PeriodicalId":11780,"journal":{"name":"EQEC'96. 1996 European Quantum Electronic Conference","volume":"55 ","pages":"223-223"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91453328","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Uoth results have been achieved by using complex and lossy grating-based pulse stretching systems. In this contribution we report for what we believe is the first time on the generation of sub-mJ-energy femtosecond pulses without using a pulse stretcher. We have developed a compact eight-pass Ti:S amplifer, which is seeded with -10 Is, 100nm-bandwidth pulses (@ 800nm) from a mirror-dispersion-controlled Ti:S oscillator. The system can be safely operated without an additional stretcher because the pulse broadening introduced by the pulse slicing and isolation components is sufficient to prevent nonlinear effects and damage in the amplifier crystal. In contrast with the conventional approach, pulse selection by a Pockels cell is performed only after the full 8O-MHz pulse train passed through the amplifier crystal four times. In this manner, ASE could be dramatically suppressed as compared to previously reported results.' Carefully placed apertures prevent the high-gain amplifier setup from lasing. After amplification the chirped pulses are recompressed in a setup consisting of dispersive mirrors and a low-dispersion FK5 (Schott) prism pair, resulting i n a quartic-phase-limited amplifier system.","PeriodicalId":11780,"journal":{"name":"EQEC'96. 1996 European Quantum Electronic Conference","volume":"4 1","pages":"211-211"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-08-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82054675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
