Frame in Focus is the title of a film made by the author and Errol Fernandes, which was screened in Film Space as part of the afternoon events of the International Art Therapy Conference 2016. These thoughts came out of our discussions during the making of the film, discussions with audiences following screenings, and discussions with two colleagues, Sally Skaife and Jon Martyn, as part of a research project. I begin with the relationship between boundary and frame in the context of the audience viewing the art, then look at some examples of exhibiting and the ethical issues involved. The ethical issues arising from the film are explored. We had run an ATLG at our first art therapy conference (Finding a voice, making your mark: defining art therapy for the 21 st century) in 2013, and hoped there might be some continuity between the first and second ATLG, a development of the dialogue of word, performance and image through time.","PeriodicalId":117738,"journal":{"name":"Art Therapy Online","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127658935","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also considers some of the ways the Service-User Movement; Outsider Art; and Art Therapy have contributed to helping people feel that they can move out of the margins and reclaim their lives. In order to do this, it discusses the historical and developing practice of Art Therapists in relation to people who have in their own language, “strange experiences”. The paper acknowledges throughout that the language used to describe people with mental health problems is rightfully challenged by the Service-User Movement. The theme of my talk – specified by my hosts – was ‘The future of art therapy’. It occurred to me at the time, and more so subsequently, that I probably wasn’t the best person to address this topic. Having trained as an art therapist in the early 1980s, I’m in my sixties now, so the prospect of retiring from clinical work in the foreseeable future is very much in my mind. As such I most definitely do not represent or embody the future  of art therapy. Moreover, at my age one is – sometimes regretfully - inclined to look to the past rather than the future. And when I look to the past, to my professional past that is, I cannot help but feel I may very well have seen the best of what art therapy can be. Allow me to explain.  [1]  © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8OipmKFDeM & https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_Look_Back_in_Anger","PeriodicalId":117738,"journal":{"name":"Art Therapy Online","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125090273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is based on the theme of the United Nations (UN) Peace Day “Right to Peace”. This is in the context of the enduring political, economic and social instabilities in this region. The setting is a half-way house for unsettled children and young people who are homeless, often orphaned as a result of political unrest and who are likely to have experienced multiple trauma. The ‘home’ situation has a religious base. In addition to food, clothing and shelter, the ‘home’ provides a mentoring programme to the children and young people who live there, based on biblical teachings. This article reports on the workshop group process, the discussions and the creative activity based on the theme. The findings of the workshop and their relevance to the lives of the children and young people in the shelter are discussed.
