Following World War II, Japanese companies imported basic technologies from Europe and the US, and successfully utilized them to their advantage. However, at the beginning of the 1980s, both European and American companies began protecting their intellectual properties. Therefore, Japanese companies have recognized the need to develop fundamental technologies themselves, and that they need substantial investment in research and development (R&D) to do so. This situation creates the important question of how R&D funds should be allocated, given the many areas of research. For these reasons, this paper first tries to focus on a process between the investment aspect of R&D and its effect on Japanese industry. Second, it introduces a concept of technological knowledge with a transportation mechanism. Third, it defines how the output of R&D clearly depends on technological knowledge, and finally, offers future R&D investment strategies. This paper creates a \"techno-dynamics model.\" It introduces the decision-making process as \"ratio of R&D expenditure to sales\" and \"distribution ratio in terms of R&D character.\" Also, it redefines the concept of technological knowledge, based on the notion is that it is an accumulation of information about how to produce output-papers, patents and goods-that can be measured by R&D expenditure.","PeriodicalId":117603,"journal":{"name":"PICMET '01. A prevailing viewpoint is held that there is an increasingly widening gap in per capita GDP and per capita net income between individuals in China since the 1978 opening & reforming policy. To analyze the interrelationship between S&T and the economy as well as to measure the gap between the regional S&T development and economic development on a quantitative basis, the authors established the evaluation approach of both science & technology and economic development. The successful start-up firms use their strength of flexibility and creativity to enter over niches the mainstream markets and reshape so the existing paradigms. Common to all these firms is that they started as very small enterprises, but grew afterwards exceptionally fast compared to their former competitors. However, the exceptional organizational development during the first few years of such high-growth firms is not well understood yet. Although the number of studies about founding characteristics and success factors rose exponentially over the last few years, little insights have been gained into the organizational development and growth of such ventures. To date, no general framework exists, which models the complex reality of ventures to a sufficient degree. And the existing theory seems to fail completely when applied to high-growth ventures. This common complaint among entrepreneurial researchers has been the starting point for the present paper and encouraged us to summarize the different existing frameworks and to evaluate their applicability to high-growth ventures. In order to accomplish this goal we performed in a first step a comprehensive review of the pertinent literature on organizational growth and development, which revealed four major organizational theories, namely the stage or life cycle models, the population ecology approach, the evolutionary models of the industrial economists, and the alternative theories of growth. A comparison of the theoretically proposed growth patterns with the actual organizational development characteristics of five explorative case studies of high-growth ventures, which have been selected from a sample of 183 team-based start-ups in the IT and high-tech sector in Germany, largely supported the claimed deficiencies.","PeriodicalId":117603,"journal":{"name":"PICMET '01. With the development of resource based view of a firm, competence, capability and skill are more and more discussed by practitioners and theorists. Knowledge is the basic unit of competence, capability or skill. So the most important thing in a resource based view of a firm is knowledge. This paper pays attention on the knowledge-creation mechanism in Chinese firms. The architecture knowledge and component knowledge are defined. A knowledge system consists of component knowledge and architecture knowledge. Component knowledge recognizes the objective as a whole or its components. Component knowledge deals with discrete knowledge and embodies in units. Architecture knowledge is the knowledge about the relationships among systems or system components. Architecture knowledge embodies in connections of units. A framework of the architecture-component knowledge-creating circle is advanced. Dotcoms such as CD Now, eToys and Peapod.com have not inspired much investor confidence; the Internet has not lived up to the hype. Even much respected e-business firms such as Amazon.com have struggled, unsuccessfully so far, to become profitable. So, e-business models are increasingly being required to improve firm value, especially through greater profitability, or lose the respect of investors. R&D can improve firm value by contributing to all three strategic elements of the value sequence: product or service innovation, operational effectiveness and brand equity. R&D can also contribute through the information technology infrastructure as a strategic lever operating on these three strategic elements. The critical role R&D can play is the central focus in this framework, which provides some interesting implications for management. The authors describe a project they carried out to value R&D portfolios at ABB. After testing various state-of-the-art valuation methods, such as the Real Options approach (Black Scholes formula, binomial trees, Monte Carlo simulation), decision trees, scenario analysis and tornado sensitivity analysis, they decided to apply Monte Carlo simulation. From their point of view this approach provides the most comprehensive insight of all valuation methods.
