Serbian Patriarch Gavrilo Dožić was also imprisoned in Vojlovica during the Second World War, alongside many other clerics of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The text first briefly describes the circumstances that led to the Bishop’s imprisonment, after which it continues with the Bishop’s stay in Vojlovica. He was imprisoned due to his actions posing a threat to the German occupation authorities in Serbia. He spent almost two years in Banat, passing his every day in prayers, writing, and translating. Following that, in the next, larger part of the text, his literary and translation activity is analyzed. His most important literary works include the Vojlovica Stoslov [Vojlovica Century] and the Canon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As for his translation work, the most important is the one of the New Testament. In the end, the spiritual and material heritage of Bishop Nicholai in Vojlovica is discussed and a kind of museumization is proposed for his personal items and manuscripts. The research material is drawn first from published historical sources, i.e. diaries and memoirs from other Vojlovica prisoners (Vasilije Kostić, Jovan Velimirović, Gavrilo Dožić) together with the published works of Bishop Nicholai, on top of relevant historiographical studies, as well as based on insights into the Bishop’s legacy, which is kept in the monastery, and oral testimonies. This text is a modest contribution to the biography and bibliography of Saint Nicholai Velimirovich and the history of the Serbian Orthodox Church and Vojlovica Monastery during World War II.","PeriodicalId":117451,"journal":{"name":"The Nicholai Studies International Journal for Research of Theological and Ecclesiastical Contribution of Nicholai Velimirovich","volume":"17 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139356623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Serbian Nation as a Servant of God) of Saint Bishop Nicholai Velimirovich, the paper examines the life, work, and achievements of Saint Stefan Štiljanović. Although it is not explicitly mentioned in Nicholai’s text, in which the author reminds us of the pious rulers of Serbia, Štiljanović’s character and legacy correspond in many ways to the descriptions from the aforementioned work. This established the paradigmatic nature of Nicholai’s instructions on the character of Serbian rulers according to the criteria of serving God, caring for the family, enduring suffering, and endowment. Confirmations of Stephen’s theodouly are found in the historical and liturgical writings in which it appears. Comparing pious Christian rulers with Old Testament patriarchs, in Stephen’s case — Joseph, represents a widespread archetype of Christian culture, noticeable both in early Christian painting and in the mentioned work of Nicholai as well as in the Service to Stefan Štiljanović. The credulous Prince Stefan also fits into Nicholai’s thesis that the battle on the Kosovo field, in fact, never ended, as well as into his epic contextualization of the Serbian defenders of Christian faith, freedom, and fatherhood. This is exactly what inspired Serbian defenders and officers from his time to the present day and led them to „theodoulian“ swear over the relics of Saint Stefan Štiljanović and ask for his blessing and intercession before God. The representatives of the army still maintain this custom through their own representative — Saint Stefan Štiljanović, in this way, they come closer to the ideal of theodouly and the Saints of Heavenly Serbia.","PeriodicalId":117451,"journal":{"name":"The Nicholai Studies International Journal for Research of Theological and Ecclesiastical Contribution of Nicholai Velimirovich","volume":"32 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139356852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On Saint Nicholai by the Pen of a Linguist 语言学家笔下的圣尼古拉

Institute for the Serbian Language of SASA Monographs 34. Belgrade: Institute for the Serbian Language of SASA, 2022. 507 pp. ISBN 978–86–82873–86–0. Writing about the language of such a great author as the Saint Nicholai (Velimirovich) can be considered both daring and a gift. The courage to tackle the description of the language of such an extensive creative oeuvre grew and matured over the years in the associate of the Institute of the Serbian Language, SANU, today a scientific advisor — Dr. Vladan Jovanović. The monograph is the result of the author’s many years of reflection on the language of Saint Nicholai. As it is impossible to encompass the incomprehensible, it is understandable that a differential approach was applied, “which means that the linguistic material is viewed in relation to the state of the contemporary Serbian literary language — its literary-linguistic norms and use in the system of functional styles.” This means that the language in Bishop Nicholai’s works is viewed in a triangle: the language of the writer (parole), the language of the national community (langue), and the language of theological style. In other words, we got only a part and the beginning, we hope, of new challenges over the description of the language of this great All-Orthodox Saint. All those new, future researches will start on these foundations, from the views of the author who received the gift of being the first to monographically describe the language of the Serbian Chrysostom.","PeriodicalId":117451,"journal":{"name":"The Nicholai Studies International Journal for Research of Theological and Ecclesiastical Contribution of Nicholai Velimirovich","volume":"203 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139356801","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These statements of condolence are found in the personal archives of the priests and now are being published for the first time. From these letters, we see expressions of Velimirovich’s pastoral care, as well as how he tried to provide Christian consolation to the grieving parents. The theological expression of Bishop Nicholai in these statements is also important. He wrote as a bishop, with the desire to remind parents of eternal life and unquenchable trust in God, which they should not neglect, but should completely surrender to him and even give praise to God — with gratitude for the life of the remaining children.","PeriodicalId":117451,"journal":{"name":"The Nicholai Studies International Journal for Research of Theological and Ecclesiastical Contribution of Nicholai Velimirovich","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139356756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper focuses on two specific topics — two discourses in the prophetic opus of Bishop Nicholai as a counterpart to the Old Testament messianic places in relation to their New Testament fulfillment. Those lofty but controversial prophecies of Nicholai are: 1) criticism of Europe and deified and untouchable European values, and 2) the question of truth and its reification in the modern world.","PeriodicalId":117451,"journal":{"name":"The Nicholai Studies International Journal for Research of Theological and Ecclesiastical Contribution of Nicholai Velimirovich","volume":"17 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139356796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the nephew of Bishop Nicholai, and staying near him, Bishop Jovan had the opportunity to witness many events from his uncle’s life, as well as crucial events from the history of the Serbian Orthodox Church in that period. Bishop Jovan stayed near Bishop Nicholai from the second grade of high school and had the opportunity to witness many events in his uncle’s life. He parted ways with him only in 1944, when the Nazi Germans took Patriarch Gavrilo and Bishop Nicholai from the Vojlovica Monastery to the Dachau concentration camp. Bishop Jovan wrote three works about Bishop Nicholai: the memoir “Bishop Jovan’s Memories of Bishop Nicholai Velimirovich” and two shorter articles which appeared in the Glas Crkve [The Voice of the Church] journal. All three works were published after the death of Bishop Jovan. The works of Bishop Jovan will be placed in a broader historical context and will help in understanding key events from the life of Bishop Nicholai, as well as fateful events from the history of the Serbian Orthodox Church in that period. In his works, he was meticulous, without the intention of elevating the main figure of his “Memories” in relation to the other figures mentioned in his works, objectively and truthfully portraying both personalities and events. Also, his work provides new insight into the life and work of Bishop Nicholai, and — being analyzed in a wider historical context — it also provides new knowledge about the history of the Serbian Orthodox Church in that period.","PeriodicalId":117451,"journal":{"name":"The Nicholai Studies International Journal for Research of Theological and Ecclesiastical Contribution of Nicholai Velimirovich","volume":"66 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139356722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bishop Nicholai’s cult is widespread in the Ukrainian Orthodox context — both in the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church and in newly established jurisdictions as well — which impacted authors from Ukraine to consider his theological contribution. This short bibliography is a small contribution to further studies of Nicholai Velimirovich in Ukraine. In the scope of this paper, there will be printed publications related to Bishop Nicholai. In the first section of this short bibliography, we will offer a preliminary list of known translations of Velimirovich’s works published in Ukraine both in Ukrainian and in Russian language. In the second section, we will list a selected bibliography of Bishop Nicholai Velimirovich in the Ukrainian scholarship. In addition to being composed as a diptych, spontaneously or not, with the icon of Christ the God-Man in the center, a triptych and an intercession (gr. δέησις) arise. With freedom of speech without imposing final answers and definitions, the author’s work is didactic. The goal is to reveal through these icons a Christian method of life in the quest for eternal answers to the meaning of existence. That is why the conclusion of this book is Lord Jesus Christ Himself — the visible Word of the invisible God the Father, as a fundament in the oratory of Saint Bishop Nicholai.","PeriodicalId":117451,"journal":{"name":"The Nicholai Studies International Journal for Research of Theological and Ecclesiastical Contribution of Nicholai Velimirovich","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121024946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
