In this paper, strategies for conservation of legumes pertaining to the collection, characterization, evaluation and conservation are presented. An integrated approach to legume PGR management in germplasm collection, characterization and\u0000evaluation, together with genetic conservation strategies both in situ and ex situ, for effective utilization is stressed. Emerging approaches such as diversity block, community biodiversity register and biodiversity fairs for genetic advancement of legumes are discussed. Collaborative efforts of farmers, scientists and policy makers in networking, capacity building, information sharing on legume PGR, and policy formulation on seed laws, quality, financing, and private-public sector partnership in legume seed development would enhance the sustainable utilization of legume genetic resources for food and agriculture. Four cutting levels (0, 20, 35 and 50 cm from soil surface)\u0000and two cutting modes (horizontal and oblique) were achieved in each season in each locality and for each species. The experimental method was a split-plot with three replicates (localities). The main factors were fuelwood tree species and the under-factors were\u0000represented by the seasons, the cutting mode and the cutting height. The experimental unit was constituted by five trees. Data of shoot number, shoot height and diameter were recorded. Results showed that all species produced at least one shoot since the first month, excepted L. lanceolata in rainy season. The mean number of the shoots produced at the end of 3 months varied from four (L. lanceolata) to 11 (H. acida and E. africana). D. oliveri, L. lanceolata and P. thonningii significantly produced the greatest number of shoots in the dry season than in the rainy season. The other species had an opposite behaviour.\u0000The shoot number varied very significantly with the cutting height, but not with the cutting mode. The shoot growth in height and in diameter were not similar among species in any season, and the cutting height and the season did not influence the shoot growth of any species. The results would contribute to sustainable management of Adamawa savannas\u0000that are now under multiple anthropic pressures. Aerobic mesophiles counts (AMC), coliforms counts (CC) and moulds and yeasts counts (MYC) were estimated, and the coliform profiles for different samples of macaroni (raw, local/ imported, laboratory-cooked) served with waakye, and vegetable salads served with waakye were determined. Raw macaroni (local and imported) had\u0000AMC of 3.6 and 3.0 log10 CFU/g, MYC of 1.9 and 1.0 log10 CFU/g and no CC, respectively. Laboratorycooked local samples had AMC of 2.4 log10 CFU/g and 3.3 log10 CFU/g (after 4 h storage) and no MYC. Macaroni obtained from vendors had AMC mean of\u00003.1-8.4, CC mean of 2.5-7.3 and MYC mean of 0- 4.1 log10 CFU/g depending on time of sampling. Vegetable salads sampled at early and late morning had AMC of 6.9 and 7.6, CC of 5.7 and 6.4, MYC of 4.9 and 5.4 log10 CFU/g, respectively. Six coliforms\u0000were detected on macaroni and three were detected in addition to Salmonella spp. on vegetable salads. No significant difference was recorded in the microbial load of raw local and imported macaroni. Cooking improved the microbial quality of raw macaroni (AMC of 2.4 log10 CFU/g). Generally, there were increases of 3-5 log cycles in the AMC, CC and\u0000MYC in macaroni sampled from waakye vendors in the morning (early and late) compared to those at dawn. Although the nature of raw macaroni and its cooking are adequate, cross-contamination from vegetable salads during the holding and bulk display periods cause deterioration in microbial quality of macaroni in waakye. There is the need to educate vendors on simple preventive steps of keeping food hygienically safe.
