Varughese, Gilsha Bai Edachalil Balan, Rema Kulangara Puthanmadathil","doi":"10.30638/eemj.2023.047","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.30638/eemj.2023.047","url":null,"abstract":"The behavior of groundwater flow in coastal aquifers is influenced by variations in salinity and density levels. Models for groundwater flow and solute transport are employed to analyze the impact of these variations. In this study, a groundwater flow and solute transport model was developed for the coastal aquifer of the Bharathapuzha River. Visual MODFLOW 2.8.1 and MT3D were utilized for modeling groundwater flow and solute transport, respectively. Water level and quality data were collected from 18 observation wells in the field on a monthly basis from 2012 to 2021. Additionally, monthly water level data from four wells managed by the Central Water Commission (CWC) were incorporated as input for the models. Hydrogeological properties of the aquifer, such as specific yield, porosity, and specific storage, were obtained from the Groundwater Department and available literature. The model was calibrated and validated using field data and subsequently employed to predict groundwater flow and solute transport in the area. The results indicate that the river stretch is highly susceptible to saltwater intrusion. Salinity levels in certain wells (wells 7, 8, 13, and 14) exceeded the acceptable limits for drinking water as per the BIS standards. Based on model predictions, saltwater intrusion is projected to extend approximately 4.8 to 5 km from the Ponnani estuary, laterally upstream along the river course, within the next 10 to 15 years if pumping rates increase by 5 to 10% from the current rate. If the pumping rate rises by 15 percent, the intrusion may extend up to 6 km from the coast. Therefore, it is crucial to implement optimal freshwater withdrawal strategies and mitigation measures in these areas to safeguard the coastal aquifers. Restricting groundwater usage along the river banks within a lateral distance of at least 5 km from the seashore is recommended.","PeriodicalId":11685,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Engineering and Management Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69522819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is need to meet standards for effluent discharge in order to comply with local and international standards. Chemical precipitation is a commonly applied low-cost technology, but has proven to be unsustainable due to sludge disposal that creates secondary pollution. Devki steel factory located in Ruiru municipality, Kiambu County is a factory that process steel products. Chemical precipitation is applied in Cr6+ treatment at effluent discharged at the factory which exceed international and local effluent discharge standard limits. There is thus need to develop innovative yet affordable technologies for Cr6+. The potential of carbonized macadamia nutshell (CMN) in Cr6+ adsorption as an alternative and eco-friendly technology was evaluated. Carbonization process modified the adsorbent surface properties by increasing the surface area, pore size, carbon content, and Cr6+ removal rate from 40.21-380.64 m2/g, 1.63-8.78 Å, 47.01-57.2% and 71-97% respectively. Maximum Cr6+ adsorption was obtained at a metal concentration 50mg/L, pH 4, contact time of 2 hours, 0.2g dose, and at 30°C. The equilibrium data were well depicted by Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm. Experimental data were well fitted with Pseudo second-order kinetics. Maximum adsorption capacity of 24.3 mg/g and removal efficiency at 97.2% was attained by CMN compared to raw macadamia nutshell (RMN) 17.95 mg/g and 71.6% respectively. The desorption results revealed that the spent adsorbent could be reused for three adsorption cycles, which makes the process eco-friendly.","PeriodicalId":11685,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Engineering and Management Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69520988","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to assess the efficacy of economic instruments in promoting C&DW reuse and diverting waste from sanitary landfills using the System Dynamics (SD) tool and scenario simulations spanning the period 2020 to 2040 in the municipality of Serra, Espírito Santo (ES). Our findings reveal that the PCG index exerts a staggering 84-fold greater influence on C&DW generation compared to that of population growth. Additionally, we observe that the implementation of a public policy, such as a landfill tax, can substantially augment aggregate recycling by 124 times when comparing the highest tax rates (6%) to the lowest tax rates (2%). Nevertheless, even under the best-case scenario, our analysis demonstrates a potential rise of 76,000 tons of illegal dumping, leading to an approximate cost increase of 10 million dollars for C&DW management until 2040. To enhance future investigations, we suggest the inclusion of penalties and subsidies in the model to comprehensively evaluate their impact on C&DW management alongside the taxation applied to landfill disposal. This multifaceted approach can provide valuable insights for devising more effective waste management strategies.","PeriodicalId":11685,"journal":{"name":"Environmental Engineering and Management Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.1,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"69525908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"环境科学与生态学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
