{"title":"The use of an abolished school building for a research facility in partnership between a municipality and university","authors":"Hiroki Itô","doi":"10.33422/2nd.bmeconf.2020.09.227","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33422/2nd.bmeconf.2020.09.227","url":null,"abstract":". As public facility management has been a challenge for municipalities under the population decrease and financial difficulties, the merge of schools has been increasing the number of abolished school buildings. In Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, College of Engineering, Nihon University has been using an abolished school building for a research facility on shallow earth thermal for public houses based on a contract with Koriyama City Government in a close relationship with its regional plans. By analysing this case, this study aims to clarify (1) the process of the case, (2) the significance and challenges for municipalities, university, and region, and (3) the contribution to policy objectives such as the spread of renewable energy sources and industrial development. It concludes that (1) favourable relationships between the municipality and the university enabled the use of the school building, (2) the project and partnership are significant to find a means to bring the results of research to society and a way to use the abandoned school, (3) administrative burdens should be eased and (4) the use of the abandoned school buildings can work to push the policies of renewable energy adoption and industry building. It proposes that municipalities should (1) create regulations such as guidelines for sharing costs and procedures for simplifying processes, (2) assess the current state of each abandoned school building and present it, (3) set a framework for subsidies and (4) take on a support role to put research results back into the community.","PeriodicalId":116723,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 2nd International Conference on Applied Research in Business, Management and Economics","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131024686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the drivers of innovation and the first movers, startup companies seize the profit opportunities and create high value-added and cross-industrial offerings. This study is among the first to discuss the new technology adoption process on the example of blockchain technology and the subsequent formation of a concomitant ecosystem in Hungary. The paper aims to overcome the lack of empirical research studies on blockchain impact on businesses by presenting the examples of startup firms’ activities and their blockchain-based solutions to the existing problems. We adopt a qualitative explorative approach and build on six case study interviews with the Hungarian blockchain-related start-ups’ founders/co-founders, an expert interview and pertinent literature review. Applying the dynamic capabilities and the ecosystem framework perspective, the study contributes to analyzing the birth and development of new blockchain ecosystem and its focal offers. The research demonstrates different real-world use cases across a number of industries, the key role of innovative entrepreneurs in the ecosystem formation and collects information on the value propositions, competitive advantages, and distinctive capabilities of the blockchain ecosystem members. The managerial implications and further research directions are discussed.","PeriodicalId":116723,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 2nd International Conference on Applied Research in Business, Management and Economics","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133431325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More precisely, the lockdown measures, the total suspension of the Marine activity and the disruption of the Marine field have led to the severe impact on the Marine corporations globally. In this paper, we examine some of the biggest Marine companies’ stocks, namely the Dynangas (DLNG), Euronav (EURN), Euroseas (ESEA), Frontline (FRO), Nordic American Tanker (NAT), Scorpio Bulkers (SALT), Sino-Global Shipping (SINO), Teekay Tankers (TNK), Tsakos Energy Navigation (TNP), Torm (TRMD) during the Covid-19 spread and the lockdown measures. Using relevant time series specifications, we establish a Bayesian framework to unveil the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on these stocks. Based on our findings, the stocks were affected by the Covid-19 spread and more precisely, the Covid-19 spread provides useful information for the predicting and forecasting of these stocks. Our findings are robust, since the out-of-sample forecasting accuracy of the alternative model employed, that explicitly incorporate the pandemic induced by the SARS-COV-2 virus, is superior to the baseline model.","PeriodicalId":116723,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of The 2nd International Conference on Applied Research in Business, Management and Economics","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132920572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such a case is the agricultural sector, which was impacted in a significant manner. In this paper, we examine two most important commodities from the agricultural sector, namely the Oats and the Wheat, during the Covid-19 spread and the lockdown measures. Using relevant time series specifications, we establish a hypothesis regarding the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the values of these two commodities. Based on our findings, the values of the commodities were affected by the Covid-19 spread and moreover, the Covid-19 spread provides useful information for the predicting and forecasting of these values.
