Based on hierarchical clustering analysis and principal component analysis (PCA), the numerical taxonomy of 17 species of water mites was carried out. These analyses were applied for 309 morphological characters of the present species. The results of the clustering analysis based on squared Euclidean distance showed that the 17 species of the water mites were divided into 10 Families in the cladogram namely Hydrozetidae, Malaconothridae, Unionicolidae, Tenuipalpidae, Tuckerellidae, Tetranychidae, Cheyletidae, Laelaptidae, Ascidae, and Dermanyssidae. The separation of these species depended on the highly-significant characters, which have high factor loading more than 1.0. The percentages of non-significant variations in the morphological characters were 51.90%, 18.45%, and 10.02% for two groups of water mite taxa with total variation equals 80.37%. In conclusion, the numerical analysis can confirm the traditional morphological taxonomy by using different analyses such as the cladistic analysis and PCA.","PeriodicalId":11659,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Zoology","volume":"93 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77189734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, the current study aimed to evaluate the cytotoxic and antitumor efficacy of scyphozoan Rhizostoma octopus (rhizostome jellyfish) venom extract (RVE) against different tumor cell lines (in vitro ) and Ehrlich ascites carcinoma (EAC)-bearing mice ( in vivo ), respectively. Four groups of female CD-1 mice (n=10) were allotted as follows: the b.wt change, tumor indices, hematological and biochemical parameters, as well as histological alterations of liver and kidneys tissues, were investigated. The results showed that RVE had high protein content with six bands ranging between 15-70 kDa, as measured by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The IC 50 of RVE against human hepatocellular (HepG-2) and breast cancer (MCF-7) cell lines were 808.4 and 896.4 µg/mL, respectively. In EAC-bearing mice, RVE treatment modulated the b.wt change, and decreased the tumor volume and the tumor cells count. In addition, the liver and kidney functions were improved in EAC-bearing mice treated with RVE, as evidenced by ameliorating their histological structure.","PeriodicalId":11659,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Zoology","volume":"46 9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83806414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twenty-five healthy individuals and fifty Schistosoma mansoni/ hepatitis C virus (HCV) co-infected patients were enrolled in the current study. The granulocytes were isolated and used to induce in vitro granuloma using SEA-conjugated polyacrylamide beads in the presence of interleukin (IL)-17 (125 pg/mL). After 3 days, the granuloma was treated with the aqueous extract of Moringa leaves (0.1 mg/mL). Praziquantel (PZQ, 0.1 mg/mL) was used as a reference drug. On the 7 th and 14 th days, the granuloma index (G.I) was determined and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, H 2 O 2 , and nitric oxide (NO) levels were measured in the culture supernatant. The microscopic examination showed a significant reduction ( P <0.05) in the granuloma size in response to PZQ or Moringa extract after 7 and 14 days, respectively, in the healthy subjects; the reduction induced by Moringa was significant comparing with PZQ after 14 days. A significant decrease was also recorded in the granulocytes’ mediators as H 2 O 2 (in both healthy subjects and co-infected patients) and NO (in healthy subjects only) in response to Moringa extract comparing with PZQ after 14 days. However, TNF-α showed a significant increase (only after 14 days) in the granuloma treated with PZQ or Moringa extract compared with the untreated granuloma of healthy individuals. In conclusion, the Moringa extract showed a higher protective activity than PZQ in reducing granuloma, possibly due to affecting the production of granulocytes’ mediators.","PeriodicalId":11659,"journal":{"name":"Egyptian Journal of Zoology","volume":"23 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76597571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
