Most magnetofossils found in the geologic record are produced by magnetotactic bacteria, which use them for navigating within their living environment. Magnetofossils can be identified using a combination of magnetic and imaging techniques. A common attribute of magnetofossils, although not pervasive, is that they are arranged in chains, which determines their specific magnetic properties. Magnetofossil signatures have been reported from ancient rocks to modern sediments and even in extraterrestrial materials. They provide a window into biomineralization, past environments, and ancient magnetic fields, as well as supplying fuel for questions on the origin of life in the Solar System.","PeriodicalId":11643,"journal":{"name":"Elements","volume":"236 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134950927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its formation in natural ecosystems is mainly due to microbial activity. Microbially synthesized magnetite, commonly called “biogenic magnetite,” has many beneficial properties for a wide range of environmental and commercial applications. Its high surface reactivity facilitates interactions with (in)organic pollutants in anthropic and natural ecosystems, as well as with reagents in industrial catalysis. Due to its magnetic properties and good biocompatibility, biogenic magnetite is also well suited for biomedical applications such as cancer treatment or drug delivery. Biomineralization of magnetite offers an inexpensive and sustainable method for the production of this highly functional material. Moreover, this biomineralization process results in a biomolecule coating of the magnetite, making it highly amenable to further functionalization. This chapter reviews the application of biogenic magnetite across environmental, medical, and industrial settings. Existing challenges and future opportunities in these applications are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":11643,"journal":{"name":"Elements","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135055609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Much of our understanding of trace element substitution and diffusion in geological materials comes as a result of experimental and petrological studies of olivine. Here, we consider trace element concentrations and incorporation mechanisms, and how these relate to diffusive behaviour. If we understand trace element behaviour in olivine, we have a powerful tool kit that can be directly applied to address many problems in petrology and volcanology. Perhaps more importantly, what we have learned from olivine can be applied to other minerals and aid us in addressing other far-reaching questions from across the Earth sciences.","PeriodicalId":11643,"journal":{"name":"Elements","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":4.5,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48667954","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As one of the earliest-crystallizing silicate minerals, olivine controls the initial chemical evolution of planet-wide magma oceans and individual lava flows alike. In solid aggregate form, it controls and records deformation of the mantle and smaller-scale intrusive complexes. The components of its crystal structure are mobile at high temperatures and their migration can be used to explore the timing of magmatic events. During chemical weathering, these olivine crystals capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as secondary minerals are formed. All of these processes take place not only on Earth, but also on other planetary bodies, making olivine ideally suited to shed light on both primordial planet-building processes and current-day volcanism and surface processes.","PeriodicalId":11643,"journal":{"name":"Elements","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":4.5,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43058618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As such, olivine has been studied since the dawn of geology and is regarded as the storyteller of the Earth’s interior. Its physical and chemical properties provide insight into its creation in magmas and its voyage through the upper mantle. However, when olivine is exposed to aqueous fluids, it adopts a more rebellious, rock star–like disposition. Here, we show that the discord, or disequilibrium, between olivine, its reaction products, and fluids containing water and carbon dioxide is so significant that it has been instrumental in changing the Earth throughout the planet’s history and will continue to do so well into the future.","PeriodicalId":11643,"journal":{"name":"Elements","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":4.5,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46410480","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"地球科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
