This photonic technique directly maps the frequency information of the incoming microwave signal to a time delay utilising a dispersive medium. The measurement of the observed time delay directly equates to value of the input microwave frequency. The frequency-time mapping function from a chirped fiber Bragg grating (FBG) having a dispersion parameter of 1000 ps/nm was measured. Excellent agreement between measurement and theory is demonstrated within the bounds of the group delay ripple (GDR) of the chirped FBG.","PeriodicalId":115448,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics jointly held with the 2008 Asia-Pacific Microwave Photonics Conference","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133154301","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, we have used two different optical wavelength sources 650 nm and 850 nm to illuminate the open end of stub. An optical illumination at the end of an open lambdag/4 stub on a microstrip line has been shown to control the transmitted power at the design frequency which can be used as an optically controlled rf switching or attenuator and further can be used as an optically controlled narrow band matching and stub based filters. In addition to experimental measurement we have also carried out modelling of optically generated load at the end for both the wavelengths along with the simulation on Ansoft Maxwell simulator. The measurement results compare well with those predicted by a simulation carried out on the Ansoft Maxwell Ensemble for both the wavelengths.","PeriodicalId":115448,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics jointly held with the 2008 Asia-Pacific Microwave Photonics Conference","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127235747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Radio on fiber (RoF) technologies can realize a cost effective universal platform for ubiquitous wireless services. RoF networks can also be extended to radio on free space optics (RoFSO) providing communication links for heterogeneous wireless services where it is not easy or feasible to install optical fiber. In this paper, we present an experimental study on transmission of RF signals over a turbulent FSO channel by using off-the-shelf radio frequency - FSO (RF-FSO) antennas. The performance results show the potential of FSO links for transmission of RF signals and are also used as a benchmark in designing, predicting and evaluating an advanced dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) RoFSO antenna capable of transporting multiple RF signals we are developing. An analytical modeling of the system is also conducted to confirm the suitability of the system and a good result is obtained compared with experimental data under weak turbulence condition.","PeriodicalId":115448,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics jointly held with the 2008 Asia-Pacific Microwave Photonics Conference","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126755502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A direct photonic QPSK modulator was implemented at 60 GHz and used in the system experiments. By combining photonic QPSK modulation and FFE, 7 Gbps data throughput was achieved over a channel bandwidth of less than 2 GHz, representing a bit-rate increase of three times over simple amplitude shift keying (ASK) modulation. The photonic QPSK modulator incorporates frequency doubling, leading to the simplification of the transmitter. In addition, frequency doubling extends the fiber length limit imposed by signal fading due to chromatic dispersion. FFE is simpler to implement and is less computation intensive than, for instance OFDM. Transmission experiments over 2 km of fiber were conducted.","PeriodicalId":115448,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics jointly held with the 2008 Asia-Pacific Microwave Photonics Conference","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125023405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our approach uses an optical pre-processor to compress the signal bandwidth of continuous-time high speed RF waveforms. To operate in continuous-time mode, the optical signal, which carries the RF, must be segmented and demultiplexed into an array of N parallel channels. In prior work, large spectral overlap between channels was needed for calibration and this limited the multiplication factor, M, to values far below the maximum value of N, which is limited by the number of back-end digitizers. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel technique using temporal overlap between channels and achieve higher multiplication. The sampling rate of a four-channel 50 GS/s real-time oscilloscope is increased by a factor of 3, enabling us to digitize a 47 GHz tone at 150 GS/s. To our knowledge, this is a record in continuous time RF digitization.","PeriodicalId":115448,"journal":{"name":"2008 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics jointly held with the 2008 Asia-Pacific Microwave Photonics Conference","volume":"42 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123222014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
