To realize matched filtering, the filter should have a spectral response that is matched to that of the input pulse, which is implemented in this paper using a photonic system that consists of an optical single-sideband (SSB) modulator and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The FBG is designed to have a spectral response which is transferred to the spectral response of the microwave filter via SSB modulation and heterodyne detection at a high-speed photodetector. A theoretical investigation on the microwave filter design and the chirped microwave pulse compression is developed. Theoretical analysis on the implementation of three different forms of microwave matched filters, including a classical complex matched filter (CMF), a phase-only filter (POF) and a modified inverse filter (MIF), is presented. A multiple quantum well structure consists of 20 periods of 18 nm QWs interleaved by 80 nm barriers with an Al alloy content of 2%. We measured the following performance characteristics: dark current, responsivity, and spectral response. A responsivity of 13 mA/W at an electric bias of 40 mV and an operating temperature of 3 K was obtained with a peak response close to the designed detection frequency. The dark current density was a few muA/cm2 and was limited by thermally assisted tunneling through the barriers. It was verified for the proposed technique to improve a suppression ratio of an optical carrier suppressed signal by 20 dB. There was an achievement of 60 GHz carrier generation which had RF peak power of -40 dBm and phase noise of -103.5 dBm/Hz at 1 MHz offset. In this work, optical hydrophone sensors based on single mode straight - cleaved fibers and down-tapered coated fibers with sensitive dimensions of less than 10 mum have been reported. Thinly gold coated optical fiber sensors demonstrated a higher sensitivity and bandwidth performance than straight cleaved uncoated and down-tapered uncoated. The statistical analysis clearly indicates that the gold coated fibers with thickness of 30 nm provide a 26 dB improvement in sensitivity over that of the uncoated straight cleaved fibers, raising the overall sensitivity of the fiber optic hydrophone sensor to a value of -245 dB re 1 V /muPa (unprecedented 0.56 V/ MPa). Broadband testing of these sensors with a 10 MHz acoustic tone burst further indicates that the bandwidth of gold coated fiber sensor is as high as 60 MHz. The system under study uses the optical frequency multiplication technique for the generation of carriers in the microwave and millimeter-wave bands. Transmission using frequencies of 18.7 GHz, 19.5 GHz, 19.7 GHz and 29 GHz is demonstrated for fiber links up to 125 km, and up to 100 km for transmission frequencies of 32.5 GHz and 36.9 GHz. In this paper the using of an OEO as a sensing system based on the high sensitivity of its oscillation frequency to the fiber length is demonstrated. A slope of -75 kHz/mm has been obtained by tuning the length of a free space path inserted in the optical loop. An accuracy of 0.54% by measuring of the refractive index of a Plexiglas plate has been recorded.
