Patients diagnosed with intellectual disability (ID) exhibit deficiencies in at least two behaviors associated with adaptation skills. The high level of association between neurodevelopmental diseases, especially ID, and ASD clearly reveals the presence of etiopathogenesis with an underlying multi-factorial and possibly a common genetic background. The SYNGAP1 gene has been associated with both ASD and non-syndromic ID. We report the case of a 13-year-old adolescent with SYNGAP1 gene mutation diagnosed with ASD, moderate ID, and epilepsy. The motor development of the patient, who had started walking at the age of 4, was delayed, and his language development was evidently inadequate since he still had no word. Stereotypical behaviors were observed with insufficient social interaction. As a result of the genetic analysis, the patient was determined to be heterozygous for a single nucleotide change (C>T) resulting in a false sense of mutation at position c.3134 in exon 15 of the SYNGAP1 gene. Thus, the present study aimed to contribute to the knowledge base on patients with rare SYNGAP1 mutation that plays a role in the etiological background of ASD, ID, and epilepsy comorbidity. To the best of our knowledge, this variant has not been reported in the scientific literature to date.","PeriodicalId":11480,"journal":{"name":"Dusunen Adam: The Journal of Psychiatry and Neurological Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82490737","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method: For this descriptive and cross-sectional study, a total of 89 volunteer Turkish MS patients completed the patient information form, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Self-Compassion Scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and MS International Quality of Life Questionnaire. Depressed patients were compared with nondepressed patients regarding HRQoL, self-esteem, and self-compassion. Bivariate correlations between HRQoL, self-esteem, self-compassion, and mental health indices were calculated followed by hierarchical regression analyses. Results: Depressed MS patients had significantly lower HRQoL, self-esteem, and self-compassion compared to their nondepressed counterparts. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that physical HRQoL was significantly predicted by disability status and self-compassion, explaining 48% of the total variance. Anxiety and self-esteem explained 52% of the total variance of psychological HRQoL. Social HRQoL was significantly predicted by depression and self-esteem, which explained 21% of the total variance. Conclusion: The effects of MS and disability may not be avoidable, but self-related traits including self-esteem and selfcompassion can be modified through psychosocial interventions to improve HRQoL. The findings of the current study provided insights into which psychosocial factors to address in improving different domains of HRQoL in MS patients. Cultivating selfcompassion may increase HRQoL in the physical domain, while working with self-esteem and self-worth may improve the psychosocial domain.","PeriodicalId":11480,"journal":{"name":"Dusunen Adam: The Journal of Psychiatry and Neurological Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75898771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data obtained from this study will contribute to the planning of services provided to families of children with disabilities. Method: The sample group consisted of 80 mothers of disabled children attending rehabilitation and special education centers in the province of Gaziantep and 78 mothers of non-disabled children, 158 mothers in total. The study used a convenience sampling method. A sociodemographic information form, Abdel-Khalek’s Arabic Scale of Death Anxiety (ASDA), and the StateTrait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were used as assessment tools. Results: The results of this study indicate that mothers of disabled children have statistically significantly higher scores on the ASDA subscale of “fear related to other situations reminding death” than mothers of non-disabled children. Similarly, mothers of disabled children have significantly higher state and trait anxiety levels. Conclusion: Mothers of disabled children have higher death anxiety and state-trait anxiety levels than mothers of non-disabled children. These results suggest that having a disabled child increases mothers’ psychological burden. We may assume that psychological support provided for mothers with disabled children will improve the quality of care they give to their children and consequently increase the quality of life of children and family.","PeriodicalId":11480,"journal":{"name":"Dusunen Adam: The Journal of Psychiatry and Neurological Sciences","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89542016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
