By analysis, it is shown that by keeping the minimum numbers of allocated sub-carriers to satisfy user rate requirements, the probability of interference occurrence in the sub-carriers is reduced and improves the expected link outage probability in the presence of flat fading and shadowing. The proposed bandwidth-constrained power minimization (BCPM) problem is formulated as a linear programming problem and used to derive three-step BCPM schemes. Simulation results in a cellular system to support voice and data services in presence of both frequency selective fading and shadowing show that the proposed BCPM schemes outperform the power minimization (PM) in terms of system outage and packet error rate.","PeriodicalId":113201,"journal":{"name":"2nd International Conference on Broadband Networks, 2005.","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127911362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With a specified capture rule and a limited amount of energy available, a user opportunistically adjusts its transmission power based on its own channel state to maximize the user's own individual throughput. We derive an explicit form of the Nash equilibrium power allocation strategy. Furthermore, this Nash equilibrium power allocation strategy is unique under certain capture rule. We also quantify the loss of efficiency in throughput due to user's selfish behavior. Moreover, as the number of users in the system increases, the total system throughput obtained by using a Nash equilibrium strategy approaches the maximum attainable throughput.","PeriodicalId":113201,"journal":{"name":"2nd International Conference on Broadband Networks, 2005.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115639715","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a realistic scenario such as an ad hoc network, the interference is inherently variable. This justifies the need for a physical layer that can optimally adapt its transmission parameters to the interference level. We use puncturing on the channel code so that we can not only change the modulation order M but also the channel code rate. We study by simulation how the optimal combination of modulation order M and channel code rate behaves with various degrees of interference. The results show that BIC M-ary PPM can be successfully adapted to various levels of interference conditions. It also shows the benefit of both rate and modulation adaptation, especially in the presence of multi-user interference","PeriodicalId":113201,"journal":{"name":"2nd International Conference on Broadband Networks, 2005.","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121669623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A WOC is capable of performing a single-step space-switching wavelength-conversion between two wavelengths. A WOC can be implemented by the simultaneous power exchange between two optical signals. Unlike existing designs, the proposed architectures do not require separate stages of wavelength converters. This leads to a switch design that has a smaller total number of components as well as a smaller number of components in the signal path. Moreover, wavelength conversion is performed between two predefined and fixed wavelengths. This avoids the need for expensive full-range wavelength converters used in most of the existing designs. Systematic methods to realize switch architectures with an arbitrary number of wavelengths and fibers are given. The three architectures are evaluated and compared to existing architectures on the basis of hardware cost.","PeriodicalId":113201,"journal":{"name":"2nd International Conference on Broadband Networks, 2005.","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121375701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose for the first time, an integrated services scheme to support elastic QoS in OBS networks. Our scheme relieves intermediate nodes of the burden of monitoring individual bursts continuously, thus largely decreasing the control overhead. We show how absolute bandwidth guarantees can be provided, and how bandwidth used by each connection can be made elastic. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our scheme using simulation studies.","PeriodicalId":113201,"journal":{"name":"2nd International Conference on Broadband Networks, 2005.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131139990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, previous wavelength assignment algorithms have seldom considered their presence. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a novel dynamic algorithm that can minimize the number of wavelength translations required for each lightpath. Our algorithm establishes a lightpath by chaining a minimum number of wavelength-continuous segments, called lambda-runs. The simulations show that our algorithm performs as well as the existing optimal algorithm while it is very scalable and easy to implement.","PeriodicalId":113201,"journal":{"name":"2nd International Conference on Broadband Networks, 2005.","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128109049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective is to minimize the cost of electronic ports, as well as the wavelength requirement of the solution. In the hierarchical grooming approach we have presented in previous work, the first phase is to partition a large mesh network into clusters of nodes. The clustering phase is very important for the final grooming result. Various clustering approaches have been considered in literature; however, not all are suitable for traffic grooming application because they do not take grooming goals into account. In this work, we select a suitable existing clustering algorithm, developed for the K-center problem, and study its performance as a clustering algorithm for hierarchical grooming. We then improve the algorithm, adapting it specifically for the traffic grooming problem. Experimental results show that the improved version generally provides better solutions than the original algorithm, on various traffic patterns, for the general topology grooming problem instances","PeriodicalId":113201,"journal":{"name":"2nd International Conference on Broadband Networks, 2005.","volume":"175 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132578331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Four main physical layer impairments degrade the quality of an optical analog signal, namely chromatic dispersion (CD), polarization mode dispersion (PMD), optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR), and nonlinear phase shift (PhiNL). In most previous studies, a Q factor evaluates the quality of transmission in considering the aforementioned parameters individually (Qi with i isin {1,2,3,4}). In this paper, we propose a tool implementing a global Q factor that takes into account the interaction between the four impairments and from which we derive the bit error rate (BER). This new factor referenced as Q8 enables to study the suitability of optical transparency in transport networks. By means of numerical applications, we compare two backbone networks: the North-American NSF network (NSFNET) and the Pan-European backbone (EBN)","PeriodicalId":113201,"journal":{"name":"2nd International Conference on Broadband Networks, 2005.","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125698579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventional studies assume that a wavelength for the lightpath is selected randomly in the distributed lightpath setup method. However, this random selection method causes unnecessary blocks of lightpath requests, even when the arrival rate of requests is low. In this paper, we develop a novel method for assigning wavelengths, based on the first-fit algorithm. In our proposed method, the intermediate nodes forecast the wavelength that will be selected at the destination node, so that the subsequent lightpath requests avoid the forecasted wavelengths. The forecasted wavelength is thus kept available until the corresponding request reserves it, which prevents wavelength conflicts with other lightpath requests. Computer-simulated performance comparison showed that our method reduces the blocking probability by more than one order of magnitude compared to random selection.","PeriodicalId":113201,"journal":{"name":"2nd International Conference on Broadband Networks, 2005.","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125477169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
