By including them in the service level agreements (SLAs) new and more complex requirements of commercial applications can be guaranteed. In this paper, a uniform framework of extending all types of QoS definitions with service availability characterization is proposed, and a new concept called quality of resilience (QoR) is defined. In addition, all service QoR parameters are expressed using the downtime probability density function and its derivatives. The new QoR factors meet the requirements of users, and the feasibility concerns of operators, which is illustrated by evaluating and comparing various resilience schemes in terms of the QoR framework","PeriodicalId":113201,"journal":{"name":"2nd International Conference on Broadband Networks, 2005.","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130646156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With real-time transfer of data from video cameras, sensors and display of information on the devices (PDAs, laptops) of EMT (Emergency Medical Team) from multiple disaster sites to the control center, the system enables disaster managers to quickly obtain patients' status information from the entire disaster area, to assist the diagnosis and treatment of patients, reducing mortality and morbidity in disaster situation. Moreover, the disaster managers in the command center can remotely control the information sent from the disaster sites. We have implemented the system prototype over the wireless network and successfully demonstrated simultaneous transmission of video, sensor information, medical image and text patient information from multiple disaster sites to the control center. In addition, for many sensor network applications, timeliness of data delivery at a sink that collects and interprets raw sensor data is of great importance. In this work, we propose a lightweight framework for source-to-sink data transfer in a wireless sensor network that is geared towards achieving the above two objectives. Our integrated framework consists of three elements: 1) simple labels that eliminate complex addressing requirements, 2) implicit routing that provides an inherent robustness during sleep/wake schedules, and 3) MAC layer anycast to support routing. Our framework, in addition, facilitates the self-organization of sensor nodes into a network that efficiently relays information from the sources to the sink. The key idea of our framework is to associate each sensor node with a hierarchical level with respect to a sink and using MAC layer anycast to simply further packets to higher levels towards the sink. There are no explicit route tables created or maintained; this eliminates the overhead due to route queries or updates, the need for complex processing and the memory requirements for caching routing information. Furthermore, with our framework, the energy costs of data transmission are evenly distributed across the nodes, thereby improving the longevity of the network. Our MAC layer anycast mechanism not only facilitates routing, but also reduces the number of MAC layer back-offs incurred and, consequently, the waiting times for data transmission. This in turn, improves the timeliness of data delivery at the sink. To summarize, our framework is a) energy efficient, b) inherently robust, and c) conceptually simple. We qualitatively assess our scheme to show its efficiency in terms of power consumption, robustness to failure, ease of setup. The results from our simulations and assessments demonstrate the aforementioned benefits and the viability and potential of using our framework.","PeriodicalId":113201,"journal":{"name":"2nd International Conference on Broadband Networks, 2005.","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125469626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it is difficult to model the saturation throughput performance of the IEEE 802.11 MAC due to the fact that the memory effect existing among different stages in the random backoff procedure. Therefore, Markov chain has been used to characterize the saturation throughput performance of the IEEE802.11 CSMA/CA protocol in many research efforts. However, one of the problems existing in the current research failed to consider all key practical issues altogether such as retry limit, backoff suspensions and the fading channel errors. Therefore, an accurate and realistic model of the IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol with fading channel errors is needed. In this work, we propose a new model based on Markov chain and validate its correctness by theoretical analyses and Ns-2 simulations. We also compared our results with other current major models. Our contributions in this work are: 1) taking the backoff suspension into considerations and derive a more accurate model than other current models; 2) introducing the fading channel errors into the modeling process and derive a close form equation of the saturation throughput performance of the 802.11 DCE simulation results show that the proposed model is same as accurate as other current models, and becomes much more accurate when considering fading channel errors.","PeriodicalId":113201,"journal":{"name":"2nd International Conference on Broadband Networks, 2005.","volume":"136 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115779907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These networks, referred to as optical code labeled GMPLS (OC-GMPLS), have higher resource utilization due to the finer flow granularity introduced into the network. In this paper we present a cross-layer mathematical model for the throughput of OC-GMPLS networks, which provides a quantitative measure for the performance of optical networks throughput taking into consideration the effect of the physical layer. The proposed mathematical model incorporates the physical layer effects on the network layer performance by expressing the throughput as a function of the physical layer bit error rate, as well as the network traffic parameters such as the number of users and the packet length. Using the developed analytical model we were able to demonstrate the significant enhancement in the network performance due to the use of OC-GMPLS. We also used our analytical model to derive several optimum network operating points, which are of great importance to network designers and researchers.","PeriodicalId":113201,"journal":{"name":"2nd International Conference on Broadband Networks, 2005.","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131498471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the measurements in a wireless network testbed, we present quantitative, realistic findings with regards to both security functions as well as network performance. First, we describe experimental setup including system configuration and protocol stack. Then, we consider a variety of individual and hybrid security policies in order to capture the impact of security services at different network layers. Moreover, depending upon mobile nodes' current location, user mobility is categorized into non-roaming and roaming scenarios. In addition, we define several performance metrics such as authentication time, authentication messages, response time, throughput to measure the overhead associated with security policies on system performance. Comprehensive experimental measurements and analysis are provided for TCP/UDP traffic streams and network variations to demonstrate the impact of security protocols in WLANs.","PeriodicalId":113201,"journal":{"name":"2nd International Conference on Broadband Networks, 2005.","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133351863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
