The crucial question is if the tool can support the learning or not. The potentials of program visualization (PV) tools, especially essential in novice programmers training, were shown in the past. Unfortunately, they are still underutilized and the results of their use are inconclusive. Moreover, the approach of creating general-purpose tools for a general-user is no longer bearable. The tools should be smart and accommodate to the changing needs, goals, and context of the users. This can increase the efficiency, acceptance and usage of PV tools. We perform a critical analysis of the current state-of-practice in PV and smart technologies and propose a taxonomy linking these research tracks. In addition, we present directions for the future of the research in smart program visualization tools.","PeriodicalId":113056,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT'05)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116972979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It represents a case study, completed in Nov 2004, which was conducted to test the sense of security that students experienced whilst using the wiki platform as a means of online collaboration in the tertiary education environment. Wikis, fully editable Web sites, are easily accessible, require no software and allow its contributors (in this case students) to feel a sense of responsibility and ownership. A comparison between two wiki studies will be made whereby one group employed user login and the other maintained anonymity throughout the course of the study. The results consider the democratic participation and evolution of the work requirements over time, which in fact ascertains the nonvalidity of administrative identification.","PeriodicalId":113056,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT'05)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121045469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study the authors looked at a similar scenario of human-environmental interaction using Internet-mediated simulations as learning environments. One hundred and forty-nine vocational high schools students participated in this study to see if they can develop adequate thinking style when they learned in a simulation environment with help from agents. The results show that the judicial thinking style was best suited to the system we designed for this project - that is, we observed the greatest amount of development for this particular thinking style. Our results indicate that it is possible to establish and support thinking styles via Internet-mediated simulations.","PeriodicalId":113056,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT'05)","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124794958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But the inherent nature of formal logic makes itself a natural choice for forming an overbearing organizing structure, which can be utilized in providing scaffolding during instructional process. This paper discusses the role of formal logic in teaching information science and information systems. We claim that formal logic can be used to realize the modern instruction design principles by ensuring activation of relevant prior knowledge and experiences when learner moves from one topic to another. The paper also describes the successful implementation and evaluation of an on-line teaching tool utilizing predicate logic notation to assist learners in mastering a difficult to learn Unix/Linux system administration command.","PeriodicalId":113056,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT'05)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126764211","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here we focus on ontologies represented as concept maps. We outline two methodological approaches for empirically validating concept maps. One procedure is to validate a given concept map with concept maps generated systematically by others. As a second method of validating a given concept map. we suggest to observe the behaviour in a relevant situational context as a validation criterion. In this scope, a method for predicting persons' problem solving behaviour by using a given concept map is outlined. In general, the purpose and ultimate use of a given concept map has to be taken into consideration for choosing a validation procedure and interpreting its results.","PeriodicalId":113056,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT'05)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115176956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
