To reduce labor work and to collect analgesic usage information and physiological data efficiently, we connected three kinds of medical instruments with Zigbee nodes through IEEE 802.11 and Zigbee networks. We developed a positioning system that allowed the medical staff to monitor the patient's locations, so they could give immediate care when necessary. The data mining system in iPCA analyzed the patient data, and made reasonable predictions about the total analgesic dosage and the need for PCA control readjustments. We completed a prototype of iPCA, which could help the medical staff monitor the patient's health conditions and locations, and provide the anesthesiologists with useful hypotheses for better PCA control to increase patient satisfactions.","PeriodicalId":112608,"journal":{"name":"The 12th IEEE International Conference on e-Health Networking, Applications and Services","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127250464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Developed color image processing software analyze digital wound image and based on learned tissue samples performs tissue classification. Implemented statistical pattern recognition algorithm classifies individual pixels of the wound image based on color information. Classification parameters were learned from examples presented to the application during the learning process. Results of the analysis contain the wound image represented in pseudo colors as well as percentage of tissue types within the wound area. Accompanied database stores all relevant wound information. Stored information makes possible qualitative and quantitative tracking of wound healing process, which gives the clinician necessary information to evaluate and adjust used therapy.","PeriodicalId":112608,"journal":{"name":"The 12th IEEE International Conference on e-Health Networking, Applications and Services","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131461212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most medication administration errors were made when patients ac-quired prescribed and over-the-counter medicines from several drug stores and use them at home without proper guidance. In this paper, we introduce Wedjat, a smart phone application that helps patients to avoid these mistakes. Wedjat can remind its users to take the correct medicines on time and keep an in-take record for later review by healthcare professionals. Wedjat has two distinguished features: (1) it can alert the patients about potential drug-drug/drug-food interactions and plan an in-take schedule that avoids these adverse interactions; (2) it can revise an in-take schedule automatically when a dose was missed. In both cases, the software always produces the simplest schedule with least number of in-takes. Wedjat works with the calendar application available on most smart phones to issue medicine and meal reminders. It also shows pictures of the medicine and pro-vides succinct in-take instructions. As a telemonitoring device, Wedjat can maintain medicine in-take records on board, syn-chronize them with a database on a host machine or upload them onto an electronic medical records (EMR) system. A prototype of Wedjat has been implemented on Window Mobile platform. This paper introduces the design concepts of Wedjat with emphasis on its medication scheduling and grouping algorithms.","PeriodicalId":112608,"journal":{"name":"The 12th IEEE International Conference on e-Health Networking, Applications and Services","volume":"1079 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116027983","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Efficient wireless networks are becoming commercially available for several applications. In spite of that, sets of “invisible” sensors for monitoring bio-signals are still expected as enabling technology for mass-market applications. This paper aims at reviewing the current state of the art, and identifying some existing open issues and added functionalities desirable for the future in heart health wireless assistance. Some results emerging from the on-going research are presented, focusing on the implementation of an innovative contact-less miniaturized radar sensor for cardiopulmonary monitoring within a wearable textile platform. The expected future developments toward a wireless body area network are reported and discussed.","PeriodicalId":112608,"journal":{"name":"The 12th IEEE International Conference on e-Health Networking, Applications and Services","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127266581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This disease presents with flu like symptoms, and it is not easy to identify because other more common diseases with similar symptoms tend to emerge naturally during monsoon seasons. The scattered number of characteristic patient complaints went unnoticed, during the rainy season, until a few deaths were reported by individual hospitals. An unusual number of flu-like symptoms concentrated in particular geographic areas (North Central and North Western Province in Sri Lanka) could have signaled the epidemiologists of an abnormal event. The present day paper-based disease surveillance and notification systems in Sri Lanka and India [2], confined to a set of notifiable diseases, often require 15-30 days to assemble and communicate field data, and for the central Epidemiology Unit to process it. This latency does not allow for timely detection of disease outbreaks, and it limits the ability of the health system to effectively respond and mitigate their consequences. The Real- Time Biosurveillance Program (RTBP) is a pilot aiming to introduce modern technology to health departments in Tamil Nadu, India, and Sri Lanka to complement the existing disease surveillance and notification systems. The processes involve digitizing all clinical health records and analyzing them in near real-time to detect unusual events to forewarn health workers before the diseases reach epidemic states. Health records from health facilities, namely the patient case disease, syndrome, and demographic information, are collected through the mHealthSurvey mobile phone application [3] and fed in to the T-Cube Web Interface [4], which is a browser based software tool that uses the T-Cube data structure for fast retrieval and display of large scale multivariate time series and spatial information. Interface allows the user to execute complex queries quickly and to run various types of comprehensive statistical tests on the loaded data [5] and [6]. The Sahana Messaging/Alerting Module is used to disseminate detected adverse events to targeted health officials and health workers. The Sahana Alerting module adopts the global content standard: Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) for structuring the messages that are transported via SMS, Email, and Web [7]. Evaluation of the RTBP involves a replication study and parallel cohort study. This paper discusses the technologies used in the pilot and the initial findings in relation to usability of the system. The RTBP research is made possible through a grant received from the International Development Research Center of Canada (105130).","PeriodicalId":112608,"journal":{"name":"The 12th IEEE International Conference on e-Health Networking, Applications and Services","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126024701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal of this study is to reduce the size of a wireless sensor by decreasing the antenna dimensions, found to be a major contributor in the final node size. As the transceiver is packaged by the antenna, we focused our investigations on the influence of the transceiver size and position on the radiation characteristics of the antenna. Furthermore, the influence of environment where the antenna is placed was done. The optimisation of this 3D antenna is made using an electromagnetic simulator in terms of radiation and influence of the environment. This antenna is a good candidate to be used in medical wireless monitoring.","PeriodicalId":112608,"journal":{"name":"The 12th IEEE International Conference on e-Health Networking, Applications and Services","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134149057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a country that is rebuilding itself from decades of war, providing extended healthcare facilities to every section of the society is a complex challenge. ViduSuwa offers to meet this challenge by delivering health services at a minimal cost. Patients living in the most remote areas can now receive the services of experts in the medical profession even if they are hundreds of miles apart. People can benefit without unnecessarily travelling great distances to meet medical consultants, thus saving cost and inconvenience. This is achieved by using easily acquirable and relatively inexpensive technology. It has been proven beyond doubt that the most successful projects always had the secret of integrating people, process and technology successfully. This paper highlights this evolutionary approach using the Teleconsultation Roadmap for eHealth transformation which takes into consideration cultural and other factors specific to Sri Lanka. It has eight stages for global connectivity in healthcare and uses a simple to practice, yet, very successful, evolutionary approach. This helps any country to systematically and successfully eTransform the Health sector ensuring sustainable and quality healthcare to all citizens.","PeriodicalId":112608,"journal":{"name":"The 12th IEEE International Conference on e-Health Networking, Applications and Services","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122177362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed solution relies on the exploitation of existing femtocellular network resources available at emergency sites in indoor environments. Extensive simulations are carried out to compare the performance of our new proposed complementary femtocellular approach to the conventional macrocellular mobile networking approach in a UMTS/WCDMA network operating environment. The simulation results indicate at least an order of magnitude reduction in service outage rates when femtocells are utilized, in the comparison to the macrocellular case for multiple dwelling unit buildings located on the cell edge.","PeriodicalId":112608,"journal":{"name":"The 12th IEEE International Conference on e-Health Networking, Applications and Services","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124106744","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When all these problems are tackled by hospitals, they will consume considerable amount of medical resources. Alternatively, providing health care services at home is an important issue for improving personal health and save hospital resources. In this paper, we present an ongoing project that designs and implements a pervasive health service infrastructure based on the grid system which is integrated with the P2P's resource sharing mechanism, to provide the personal health service. The personal health status is recorded, monitored, and even mined in/from the proposed pervasive health service system for preventive medicine. Additionally, wireless sensor equipments for mobile personal health services are also integrated into the pervasive health service system, in order to construct a situation-aware, context-aware and environment-aware mobile-health-service platform.","PeriodicalId":112608,"journal":{"name":"The 12th IEEE International Conference on e-Health Networking, Applications and Services","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128059220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
