Both the adult medusa of P. humilis and the polyp stage of P. tenuis are unknown, but it is possible that they are different stages of the same species, a hypothesis still to be tested. Colonies of P. humilis growing on the southern king crab Lithodes santolla collected at the Atlantic Patagonian coast, and two small medusae released from these hydroid colonies were analyzed. Medusa of P. humilis were kept alive for 3 days and they were morphologically compared with the medusae of P. tenuis sorted out from ~ 2,500 plankton samples along the Atlantic Patagonian coast. The study of these specimens allowed reassessing the taxonomic status of P. humilis and P. tenuis from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Polyp and young medusa stages of P. humilis were described, and additional information was recovered to better describe the medusa stage of P. tenuis. New morphologic and biogeographic evidences in order to propose the synonymy between P. tenuis and P. humilis were discussed.","PeriodicalId":112376,"journal":{"name":"Marine and Fishery Sciences (MAFIS)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129028811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From 1996 to 2013, six bull sharks were landlocked in a golf course lake near Brisbane. The adjacent Logan and Albert rivers trapped sharks due to major floodings. When floodwaters receded, these sharks remained in the lake, which is normally isolated from the riverʼs main channel. While this event was extensively reported in the media and recieved much public attention, it has not been investigated in depth, yet it provides an opportunity for insights into the tolerance of bull sharks to low salinity habitats and euryhalinity in this species. Currently, information on the extent of the bull sharkʼs capability to endure low salinity conditions and its longevity in these environments is scarce. The case reported here provides information on the occurrence of bull sharks for 17 years, which represents the longest uninterrupted duration in a low salinity environment that ever has been recorded in this species. Bull sharks arrived first in the lake as juveniles but through time, they have reached maturity. This occurrence presents not just another ordinary bull shark record from a low salinity environment but instead a record of physiological and scientific importance. Therefore, details of the residency of C. leucas in an Australian golf course lake are reported here.","PeriodicalId":112376,"journal":{"name":"Marine and Fishery Sciences (MAFIS)","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126758096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reconstructing the length and weight of each consumed specimen is essential to provide a detailed description of the trophic ecology of top marine predators. Predictive linear regression equations were calculated for the Patagonian stock of Argentine anchovy to estimate parameters of length-weight relationships using measurements of whole individuals and diagnostic elements such as otoliths, head bones and pectoral fin bones. Among the diagnostic elements analyzed, the cleithrum and dentary exhibited the best fit. This study validates the use of head and pectoral girdle bones as reliable indicators for predicting the weight and length of Argentine anchovy across a wide size range, which corresponds to the target range of various predators. These relationships can contribute to the determination of body condition, estimation of consumed biomass, and calculation of energy density, providing valuable insights into the trophic ecology of predators in the southern Atlantic Ocean.","PeriodicalId":112376,"journal":{"name":"Marine and Fishery Sciences (MAFIS)","volume":"6 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128054394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In San Jorge Gulf, Patagonia, between 46° S and 48° S, oil slicks have been surveyed performing ellipse patterns in response to mesotidal dynamics. These effects were assigned to recent episodic increments of summer bottom temperatures at depths between 100 and 120 m, which are 2 °C warmer than those recorded during the 20th century. Slicks are assumed to have their origin from faults already known by the oil industry onshore. The effects here described should be envisaged in a climate-change scenario leading to temperature increases of the oceans’ shallow waters, together with other effects such as the human-induced global sea level rise. Under such warmer conditions seeps from continental shelf floors will become more frequent, and their contribution to the atmospheric C budget should be globally assessed.","PeriodicalId":112376,"journal":{"name":"Marine and Fishery Sciences (MAFIS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129452882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

El suministro de bienes y servicios se impactó por las restricciones en el transporte de embarcaciones, aislamientos y cierres de fronteras, entre otros. Considerando lo anterior, el Ordenamiento Marino Costero: Visión de Autoridad Marítima por ser un proceso continuo y adaptativo, analizó las posibles afectaciones que presentaron las actividades de acuicultura, parques eólicos offshore y cables submarinos, definiendo dos escenarios de desarrollo futuro proyectados al año 2030. Lo anterior se llevó a cabo mediante la aplicación del Modelo de Asignación y Co-localización propuesto por la DIMAR, en el que se consideró porcentaje de crecimiento, zonificación de áreas aptas, análisis de compatibilidad/incompatibilidad e Índice de Priorización para la Toma de Decisiones (IPTD) para los tres usos. Los resultados de esta investigación sugieren que la acuicultura, es condicionalmente incompatible con cables submarinos y parques eólicos offshore y, presenta el mayor IPTD por su tendencia de crecimiento y representatividad dentro de la zona de estudio. Esta zona de pesca cubre el talud y plataforma desde los 60° S hasta los 37° S en la Zona Económica Exclusiva argentina. El principal caladero se encuentra en la zona sur, colindando con las áreas marinas protegidas (AMP) Banco Namuncurá-Burdwood II (NBBII) y Yaganes (Y), establecidas en 2018. Para determinar el impacto que generan las AMP en la distribución del esfuerzo, se analizaron espacialmente 308 viajes de pesca realizados entre 2010 y 2020, que reportaron 82% del total del esfuerzo pesquero declarado de merluza negra argentina en ese período. El sector Y-AMP categorizado como Reserva Nacional Marina y ubicado al sur de Tierra del Fuego, reportó más de la mitad (58%) de la captura de merluza negra registrada durante ese período, mientras que el NBBII-AMP ubicado al este de Tierra del Fuego y sur de la Isla de los Estados representaron 17%. El sector NBBII-AMP establecido como Reserva Nacional Marina Estricta y ubicado al sur del Banco Burdwood representó el 25%. Por ello, comprender los movimientos en diferentes escalas temporales y espaciales contribuiría a conocer más acerca del comportamiento que presenta la especie en la plataforma patagónica argentina y chilena. Desde 2004, el Instituto Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo Pesquero (INIDEP, Argentina), inició un programa de marcado y recaptura de D. eleginoides. Un total de 5.907 ejemplares, en su mayoría juveniles (< 82 cm de largo total), fueron marcados y liberados en sectores ubicados en aguas del borde de la plataforma y talud de la Argentina entre 37° S y 47° S (Sector norte del caladero argentino), y al este de la Isla de los Estados y sur de Tierra del Fuego (54° S-57° S -Sector sur del caladero argentino). Actualmente, fueron recapturados 121 ejemplares, 25 (20,7%) se recuperaron en el Sector norte, 84 (69,4%) en el Sector sur y 12 (9,9%) en aguas del Océano Pacífico en Chile. El 67,5% fue recapturado a menos de 20 mn (37 km) del lugar de liberación y 15% recorrió distancias inferiores a las 120 mn. Una fracción menor (5%) recorrió distancias entre 120 y 400 mn y solo 12,5% se recapturó a más de 400 mn. Mediante un Modelo Aditivo Generalizado se determinó que las variables Días en libertad, Sector y Época de marcado influyeron en la distancia recorrida de los ejemplares. A partir del presente trabajo, parece evidente que la especie en el cono sur americano carece de desplazamientos migratorios regulares que involucren a una parte significativa del stock.","PeriodicalId":112376,"journal":{"name":"Marine and Fishery Sciences (MAFIS)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123809578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three isoproteic and isolipidic diets (41% protein and 12% lipid) containing 0 (C0), 100 (C100), and 300 (C300) mg of canthaxanthin kg-1 of diet were prepared. Before initiating the radiation experiment, prawns were fed with the different diets for a period of 21 d in order to determine a possible accumulation of carotenoids. Afterwards, animals were exposed to two radiation treatments for 7 d: a) photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, 400-700 nm), and b) total radiation (PAR+UVR, 280-700 nm), under controlled conditions (19 ± 2 °C, salinity = 33, pH = 7). In animals exposed to PAR+UVR treatment, survival varied between 50 and 83.33% with the highest value in animals fed diet C300. At the end of the experiment, significant statistical differences were registered in integument carotenoid concentration. Under UVR stress, the highest decrease in non-polar carotenoid and esterified astaxanthin were recorded in prawns fed diets containing canthaxanthin. Scavenging properties were evaluated by electron resonance spectroscopy (EPR) using the stable 2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. Prawns fed with C300 showed the greatest activity to quench DPPH. Results suggested that dietary canthaxanthin could be acting as an antioxidant against reactive oxygen species and produced high tolerance under UVR stress.","PeriodicalId":112376,"journal":{"name":"Marine and Fishery Sciences (MAFIS)","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128708866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We tested the assumption that herbivore exclusion keeps the growth of seagrass shoots up to a minimum length. Fish visual census was used to count the abundance of fish in the area during high tide at a distance of 5 m away from the treatment cages with a 15 m transect length. Among all species, Siganus fuscescens was the most abundant (499) followed by S. guttatus (153), while Thalassoma jansenii was the less abundant (13). The result of the weekly fish count in the seagrass bed showed highly significant variations in the number and census of species present in the area (df = 11, MS = 2.88, F = 30.10, p < 0.001). Analysis of shoot length measurement in treatment cages also exhibited highly significant differences throughout the sampling period (df = 11, MS = 726.71, F = 1,633.10, p < 0.001). Comparison between initial and final shoot counts also showed significant differences, with a higher shoot count in the full cage (X2 = 8, df = 2, p = 0.018; FC > PC > OP). This study raises clear evidence to support the assumption that herbivore exclusion positively influences the growth of T. hemprichii in this area.","PeriodicalId":112376,"journal":{"name":"Marine and Fishery Sciences (MAFIS)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124852255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
