This paper presents an implementation model for the management functions of the Reference Model for Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP), proposed by the ISO, where distributed applications can be structured into capsules, clusters and basic engineering objects. A prototype of this model for the Sun OS environments, developed at UNICAMP, the University of Campinas, is described.","PeriodicalId":112195,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Third International Workshop on Services in Distributed and Networked Environments","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125300980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a method for monitoring distributed systems by applying concepts from the field of relational databases. The user may request information from the entire network by means of simple relational queries which are automatically optimized and implemented with flexible agents. This approach solves a large class of problems, adapts well to changes in the network, is not dependent on a central site and presents a usable example of flexible agent technology. The approach is illustrated by means of examples in service and systems management.","PeriodicalId":112195,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Third International Workshop on Services in Distributed and Networked Environments","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116564597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

That \"computer\", however is characterized by a complexity, chaos, and abundance of information which makes it increasingly difficult for a single (let alone nonexpert) user to efficiently utilize it. We propose an architecture that allows users to have their own personal view of the network, and therefore make \"the network their personal computer\". In our architecture users can describe their personal working environment (PWE) which will be instantiated on the terminal they are using regardless of the type of terminal equipment or their specific location within the network. This demands that resources in the respective vicinity of the user be considered for inclusion in his/her personal working environment and that the terminal be flexible enough to present different incantations of the same resources in a consistent manner to the user. We describe the components needed for such an architecture and report on a prototype implementation.","PeriodicalId":112195,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Third International Workshop on Services in Distributed and Networked Environments","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133262350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes a management policy notation which can be used to define both authorisation policies (what activities a manager is permitted to do) and obligation policies (the activities a manager must perform). Some example policy specifications are given to demonstrate the notation and the concepts involved. A graphical policy editor is described which permits high level abstract policies to be refined into lower level, implementable policies and maintains derivation and dependency relationships between the different policies. A policy service which stores policies is outlined and its integration within a domain service for grouping policies is explained Outlines are given of implementations of automated managers for interpreting obligation policies and of an access control mechanism for enforcing authorisation policies.","PeriodicalId":112195,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Third International Workshop on Services in Distributed and Networked Environments","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122256443","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With systems based on the secure WWW there are some problems in application to the \"pay per view (PPV)\" service and in the system structure which concentrates system functions. To overcome these problems, we propose a new information distribution model which allows commercial information registered by an information provider to be freely distributed on the Internet with copyright control. The content is protected against fabrication and access without authorization by utilizing encryption techniques. A user can access it by getting a enciphering key from a key server after an authorization procedure, for example after making payment. This model is applicable to the PPV service and reduces the load of specific hosts and networks compared with systems based on the secure WWW.","PeriodicalId":112195,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Third International Workshop on Services in Distributed and Networked Environments","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130126270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However the World Wide Web, which provides an important solution for distributed hypermedia, is typically used as a closed hypermedia system: it does not exploit the link service concept. This paper presents the design of a system which applies the open hypermedia philosophy to the World Wide Web, whereby the link service component is abstracted out into a third party service known as the distributed link service (DLS). A scalable architecture for the DLS is discussed and experience with a prototype is described.","PeriodicalId":112195,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Third International Workshop on Services in Distributed and Networked Environments","volume":"232 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122504452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The same tools can be used in unicast mode for one-to-one communication. The focus of development so far has been on group-working and conference support. As a result, there is a session directory tool that allows users to advertise conferences and to join the ones that interest them. On the other hand, the support for setting up one-to-one sessions and closed-group conferences is rather limited. A new set of session-control facilities is needed to create a 'multi-media telephone' from the components now available. This paper lists some requirements and proposes mechanisms to address them.","PeriodicalId":112195,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Third International Workshop on Services in Distributed and Networked Environments","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133818363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Resource management in such systems is complex because of physical distribution of the resources, communication delays and the lack of global state informations. This paper describes a scalable load monitoring service and a scalable resource query service developed in the Warp project to provide necessary state information for resource management. Scalability is achieved by reducing the network traffic. Techniques include exploiting the IP multicast for one-to-many communications, using supply-driven and demand driven approaches for disseminating different classes of information, compressing information, and tailoring servers only to publish information when certain conditions are met. GUI tools, statistical analysers, and job scheduling are example clients of the services.","PeriodicalId":112195,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Third International Workshop on Services in Distributed and Networked Environments","volume":"30 3","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114037143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a CORBA application this functionality is currently hidden in the methods of the server objects. This complicates design, validation and maintenance of distributed applications. To improve this situation we propose guards and concurrency annotations for the CORBA IDL. Our approach allows the explicit description of synchronization constraints as an extension to the object interface definition with the advantage of increased transparency and the potential for automated checking and reasoning. The annotations are included as IDL comments to ensure compatibility with the CORBA standard. Additionally the concept for an automated generation of method frames containing synchronization code is outlined.","PeriodicalId":112195,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Third International Workshop on Services in Distributed and Networked Environments","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129498139","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When the networked system concept became widespread, centralized solutions such as the Network Information Service (NIS) were developed to help the system manager to control a network of workstations. Today, when many sites contain hundreds of workstations, these solutions may no longer be adequate. This paper proposes the usage of techniques, developed for group communication and database replication, for distributed cluster management. We show how group communication can be exploited to provide three classes of frequently needed operations: simultaneous execution of the same operation in a group of workstations; software installation in multiple workstations; and consistent network table management (improving the consistency of NIS).","PeriodicalId":112195,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Third International Workshop on Services in Distributed and Networked Environments","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122660186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
