The upheaval in all phases of life of a patient necessitates active involvement of both patient and caregiver. The importance of need assessment of patient by patients themselves and their caregivers need to be separately assessed to provide holistic care to patients. Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the needs of patients with opioid dependence syndrome as perceived by patients themselves and their family caregivers. Setting and Design: A comparative cross-sectional study conducted in a drug dependence treatment facility in India. Subjects and Methods: The needs of 105 opioid-dependent patients perceived by patients themselves and their family caregivers were assessed using Camberwell Assessment of Need Short Appraisal Schedule. Results: The most common unmet needs of patients as rated by patients themselves were physical health, money, and company. The most common unmet needs of patients rated by caregivers were money, looking after home and daytime activities. The agreement of needs of patient was poor in domains such as self-care (k = 0.17), looking after home (k = 0.16), company (k = 0.13), physical health (k = 0.10), money (k = 0.09), and psychological distress (k = 0.06). Conclusion: Addressing the needs of patients with opioid dependence might help in developing a more holistic management plan which will improve treatment outcomes. Nurses should be active part of communication system and fill the gap existing in the needs of patients.","PeriodicalId":112128,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Psychiatric Nursing","volume":"12 5 Suppl 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132892300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Joseph, Babitha K Devu","doi":"10.4103/iopn.iopn_7_22","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4103/iopn.iopn_7_22","url":null,"abstract":"Introduction: Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a much common concept widely discussed nowadays. Specifically, it is a neurodevelopmental disorder found in children and adults. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder (DSM)-V, SLD stands for a group of disorders that impedes the ability to learn or to use the requisite academic skills. It comprises impairment in reading, writing, and mathematical ability. Aim of the Review: This systematic review aimed to identify the prevalence and pattern of learning disability among children of India. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines and is also registered under PROSPERO vide CRD Number: CRD42021286224. The literature search was done using Boolean operators in databases such as PubMed, ProQuest, Cochrane, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and websites such as ResearchGate, Academia, and so on. The literature search was focused on Indian studies conducted between 2000 and 2020 (20 years). The initial search identified 122 articles across the databases. Following the screening process and removing the duplicate files, 20 articles were included in the review. According to the predetermined protocol, the researcher independently searched, reviewed, collected, extracted, and evaluated the requisite data and relevant information from each research article. Each individual research article was assessed for its quality using the “critical appraisal tool for use in systematic reviews addressing questions of prevalence.” In the current review, considering the heterogeneity between the studies with regard to sample selection, geographical location, and instrument used for data collection, a random-effect model was adopted. The statistical evaluations were done through OpenMeta (Analyst). Results and Discussion: The prevalence of learning disability among Indian children ranges from 2.16% to 30.77% across the studies. The pooled prevalence of LD among children and adolescents is estimated to be 10.70% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 7.10% to 14.3%), and the median age was 6–12 years. The prevalence of dyslexia among children and adolescents is estimated to be 6.20% (95% CI: 4.40% to 7.90%; I2 = 97.01% P < 0.001), while the prevalence of dysgraphia is estimated to be 6.30% (95% CI: 3.60% to 9%; I2 = 97.83% P < 0.001). Moreover, the prevalence of dyscalculia is much lower and it is estimated to be 4.90% (95% CI: 2.60% to 7.20%; I2 = 97.59% P < 0.001). The finding of this review is consistent with another review by the National Survey of Children's Health, USA, which estimated the lifelong prevalence of learning disability to be 9.7% in children (USA) from 3 to 17 years of age. Conclusion: The finding of the review explains that learning disability affects quite a large number of Indian Children. The information from the current review may set a benchmark to assess the disease burden of the c","PeriodicalId":112128,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Psychiatric Nursing","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126322427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There have been difficult times when nursing professionals have overworked despite shortage of resources, continuously wearing PPE over hours, and overfilled intensive care units (ICUs). Thus, while confronting the numerous COVID-19-related challenges, nursing professionals might have experienced anxiety and utilized various coping strategies to reduce their anxiety. Methods: The cross-sectional survey was conducted using a web-based questionnaire. Information was collected from 200 nursing personnel's working in the COVID ICU of a selected tertiary care hospital. The questionnaire used for data collection comprised three sections: the first section focused on sociodemographic profile of subjects, the second section included the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, and the third included Brief COPE. Results: The result revealed that majority, 61%, of the subjects had no COVID-19-related anxiety, whereas 33.5% of subjects had mild-to-moderate COVID-19-related anxiety. However, only 5.5% of the subject reported marked-to-severe form of COVID-19-related anxiety. The highest anxiety scores were identified for items: (1) I get feelings of numbness and tingling in my fingers and toes, (2) I feel weak and get tired easily, and (3) I have nightmares. To cope up with anxiety, majority of nursing professionals' approach “praying or meditating” coping style mechanism followed by positive reframing and planning. Conclusions: COVID-19 is causing mild-to-moderate anxiety in a significant number of nursing professionals. Thus, the hospital administration and nurse managers should focus on early screening for anxiety, providing psychological support to nurses, and training ineffective coping strategies.","PeriodicalId":112128,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Psychiatric Nursing","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114573249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Individuals who abuse alcohol affect themselves and family, especially their spouses. This study explored the lived experiences of wives of alcohol use disorder (AUD) partners within the context of phenomenology. This was essential to understand their life as they experienced it, from their perspective and the coping resources adopted by them. Materials and Methods: Interpretive phenomenology was used with a purposive sampling of wives of AUD partners attending the de-addiction clinic. After explaining the study and written consent, in-depth interviews were conducted with 11 participants, which led to data saturation. Results: Data were explicated by thematic analysis. Significant statements and meaning units were identified, and codes were assigned. Three categories namely impact on self, effect on life, and coping strategies were emerged. Two major themes namely “faced innumerable challenges and used adaptive and maladaptive coping” were generated. Conclusion: Wives faced innumerable problems of poor health, physical misery, social relations, emotional disturbances, marital discord, and financial burden. In terms of coping, most wives relied on either avoidance or tolerance which was not productive for them or their partners. The wives covered up partners' alcohol dependence, took on their responsibilities, withdrew or distanced themselves from friends and family. Many of them put on a brave front and continued to live with the constant stress.","PeriodicalId":112128,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Psychiatric Nursing","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122280948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Globally, tobacco accounts for the death of 6 million people each year. The tobacco industry very intelligently uses the mass media platform for pro-tobacco propaganda messages. India made a significant attempt to fight tobacco by endorsing the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in February 2004. The WHO has introduced the MPOWER package of six proven policies to reverse the tobacco epidemic and prevent millions of tobacco-related deaths. Surprisingly, with all the awareness about these harms related to tobacco consumption and anti-tobacco campaigns at national and international levels, tobacco users do not feel motivated to quit. Anti-tobacco health messages (ATHMs) are crucial in affecting tobacco-related health behavior. This review summarizes the effect of ATHMs on the Indian population and the influences of different types of ATHMs on motivation to quit tobacco and tobacco cessation as a whole. Depending on the group investigated, ATHM effects on smoking behavior vary. ATHMs can influence people's attitudes and beliefs, improve intentions to stop and quit attempts, and decrease tobacco use dominance. They can also play a crucial role in educating the public about the dangers of tobacco use. The government must concentrate on rational ATHMs with broad appeal, ongoing exposure, and a preference for negative health effects with visual and live testimonial ads.","PeriodicalId":112128,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Psychiatric Nursing","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131798639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several established treatment approaches, both pharmacological and nonpharmacological are available but have only modest success. Relapse in alcohol use is noted to be common following treatment, hence efficacy of newer modalities of treatment or therapies is needed. Aim: This study aims to assess the efficacy of audiovisual psychoeducation on the level of knowledge and attitude of harmful effects of alcohol among AUD patients admitted to mental health units of selected hospitals of Western Maharashtra. Materials and Methodology: A quantitative research approach with pretest-posttest control design was adopted in the study. The sample size was estimated to be 70 based on the pilot study and settings were mental health units of selected hospitals in Western Maharashtra. A simple random sampling technique was used with random allocation of subjects into experimental group and control group by lottery method. A structured tool to assess knowledge was developed, validated by experts and reliability was tested. Alcohol Decisional Balance Scale, which is a standardized tool was used for assessing the attitude. Pretest knowledge assessment was done for control and experimental groups. Audiovisual psychoeducation was given to the experimental group. Both the groups were receiving routine care. A posttest assessment was done after 7 days of intervention. Results: Findings revealed that there is statistically significant increase in the level of knowledge from pretest mean score of 9.37 + 3.191–14.06 + 4.179 in posttest of the experimental group by Wilcoxon Z value test at the level of significance P < 0.0001 showing the efficacy of audio-visual psychoeducation in changing the level of knowledge. Similarly, postintervention attitude distribution assessment in the experimental group revealed a statistically significant difference in positive attitude from 6 (17%) in pretest to 12 (34%) in posttest with the McNemar's test at level of significance of P < 0.031. Correlation in level of knowledge with attitude revealed a weak positive correlation with r = 0.17. There was no significant association of pretest knowledge with selected socio-demographic data. Conclusion: Audiovisual psychoeducation is efficient in increasing the level of knowledge and change in attitude toward harmful effects of alcohol.","PeriodicalId":112128,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Psychiatric Nursing","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117268179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

No exact cause has been determined that may be responsible for its occurrence. However, genetic and environmental factors could be responsible for this disorder. Autism spectrum disorder is one area where little research has been done regarding mealtime behavior and increasing prevalence of this disorder indicated a dire need to study this area. The study aimed to observe the mealtime behavior of 15-year-old adolescent boy during his mealtime and understanding the factors that might be responsible for the idiosyncratic mealtime behavior. Nonparticipatory observation method was used for about 1 month, and data were collected till the point of saturation, where the data collection process no longer offered any new or relevant data. Speech impairment, restricted interest, vestibular difficulties, interference, sensory issues, lack of social interest, and self-absorbed behavior were some of the factors that might be responsible for his idiosyncratic behavior during mealtimes. The study recommended that nutrition-based intervention programs must be initiated by the professionals as early as possible to minimize the effect of such factors during mealtime of people with autism spectrum disorder.","PeriodicalId":112128,"journal":{"name":"Indian Journal of Psychiatric Nursing","volume":"45 23","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120816300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The COVID-19 pandemic could have a considerable psychological effect. We aimed to explore the role of media on the level of perceived infectability and germ aversion toward coronavirus infection of the public at early stage of the pandemic. Methods: In this study, 708 individuals who live in different geographical locations of the Duhok Governorate in Iraqi Kurdistan were included between March 16 and 25, 2020. Results: The mean age of the participants was 27.40 (18–74 years). The participants reported that traditional news services have a relaxing role regarding the coronavirus pandemic (58.3%) in contrast to a stressing role of social media (64.7%). The mean values of vulnerability, perceived infectability, and germ aversions to COVID-19 infection were 4.74, 3.99, and 5.49 of 7.0, respectively. Participants who considered social media to have a stressing role were more likely to be bothered when someone sneezes without covering their mouths (4.45 vs. 4.04; P = 0.044). In addition, they were more likely to think that they catch an infectious disease (3.89 vs. 3.51; P = 0.016), and have a less strong immune system to protect them from most illnesses (2.85 vs. 2.40; P < 0.001), respectively.
