We show that positioning of the bridges in the subnetwork determines the performance of the DQDB subnetworks, and the performance of the hierarchical communication system as a whole. It is shown that the new coding scheme provides a substantial coding gain both on Gaussian channels and Rayleigh channels. On a Gaussian channel, it outperforms 64-state trellis-coded modulation (TCM) by 2.5 dB at the bit error rate (BER) of 10/sup -6/. For instance, sites in the system are grouped into location areas that are used to find mobiles and terminate incoming calls. In this way, the system only needs to track the movement of users when they cross from one service area to another. Still, since the tracking is done using radio bandwidth that is needed for telephone calls, it is important to carefully design the service areas to minimize the mobility management load. The authors define the characteristics that are needed in the service areas for digital cellular systems and state the service area design problem as a graph partitioning optimization problem where the goal is to minimize the diameter of the resulting subgraphs. A heuristic technique is then proposed to design service areas in a systematic and efficient way. A very effective solution, already experimented with digital audio broadcasting, is the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique with a guard interval. Unluckily such an interval grows from a few ten microseconds, sufficient for typical urban propagation environment, up to 600 microseconds, when the emerging single frequency network (SFN) is considered. A long guard interval (as required in a SFN) results in a excessive prolongation of the symbol period (T) and thus in bandwidth efficiency loss. In addition, the use of a too long symbol period is limited by the effects of time selectivity of the channel and by technological limitations. In this light, the use is suggested of a shorter guard interval and a low complexity equaliser at the output of each subcarrier to reduce the error produced by the echoes exceeding the guard interval duration. A multiresolution (MR) transmission scheme has been adopted in order to eliminate the sharp threshold effect in the fringes of the broadcast area. Theoretically, it achieves significant coding gains over conventional uncoded multilevel modulation without compromising bandwidth efficiency. The authors study the effect of trellis encoding algorithms, and evaluate their effectiveness for the carrier serving area (CSA) loop environment in the presence of imperfect echo cancelers, for primary rate ISDN application. A basic methodology for the simulation of trellis codes for QAM clusters is utilized. The effect of trellis codes for 16and 64-QAM is studied. Results for the coded 16- and 64-QAM constellations for three typical loops with 60 dB of echo cancellations are presented. Increasingly not only are ANs becoming more sophisticated but they are also tending to combine features of both exchanges and transmission systems. In order to cope with this evolution a new type of TMN Q3 interface [CCITT Recommendation M.3010, 1992] is required to convey management information to and from the associated operations systems (OSs). To avoid different interfaces to the many and varied ANs being deployed, the new interface needs to be technology and implementation independent. This is best achieved by a common management interface between the network operators' OSs and the suppliers equipment. This type of interface would be terminated by an element manager (EM) that translates between the generic interface to an OS and the application specific communication within the AN. The need to accommodate different architecture's within a common interface cannot be met by the existing generic (object model) CCITT framework, and an approach being developed by the ETSI NA4 Sub-Technical Committee seems more appropriate. The common interface must also be capable of handling the ongoing build and evolution of the AN. This can be modelled by making use of a logical parallel with test management. In the longer term, ANs will evolve and become responsible for services. They can be characterised as an equipment limit which is determined by the maximum number of mobile stations that can be supported by a base station with given equipment, and an interference limit, which corresponds to a maximum number of carriers that can be used in a cell if a given signal-to-interference ratio must be guaranteed. Depending on base station (BS) equipment dimensioning and propagation conditions in the cell coverage area, one of the two limits will apply and define a maximum capacity of the base station that cannot be exceeded without modifications of the base station. Several techniques for base station upgrades have been developed which focus on one of the two limits or both. In the paper, traditional techniques such as spectrum upgrade, sectorisation, codec rate reduction and cell splitting are revised and compared to a new technique called A-SDMA (adaptive space division multiple access), which is introduced. Two distinctive characteristics of the CCS network are: (1) traffic offered to the CCS network is in proportion to that offered to the message network, and (2) the CCS network has substantial redundant network elements built in for reliability purposes. In this paper, methods for traffic forecasting of the CCS network are considered with these two characteristics in mind. Since LAN terminals tend to transmit packets at the same speed as that of network links, such as at 100 Mbps, ATM LAN switches are inevitable to provide much larger buffer capacity than public network ATM switches, which are designed to accommodate lower-speed data services than the network link speed. Moreover, both low delay switching and multicast functions are required for multimedia applications. Responding to these requirements, this paper proposes a new switch architecture, referred to as \"expandable ATOM switch (XATOM)\", which is a kind of input and output buffer switch architecture, and can expand the buffer capacity simply by adding low cost memory chips. By combining low-speed and large capacity input-buffer memories and a backpressure control between input and output buffers, the XATOM switch can achieve high-throughput with low cell loss rate even in high-speed burst traffic environments. Since contention among multiple input buffers is eliminated in the XATOM switch, the input buffer management, both for avoiding head-of-line blocking and for supporting priority and multicast control functions, can be easily implemented. Delay and cell loss probability for the XATOM switch have been evaluated based on simulation study results. The switch operation is explained in detail, and its performance is compared to that of a linked list switch. The memory capacity requirements are decreased, and cell storage and retrieval is simplified. Additional features are easily added, including priority handling and the first reported architectural support for multicasting in a single-chip shared buffer ATM switch. A novel parallel-to-serial memory is presented as an interface between the shared buffer and the output ports.
