Such interactions are often so important that they are necessary for the survival, reproduction and evolution of life. This article discusses various mutualistic and even parasitic interactions between different life forms and the cactus genus Copiapoa, endemic to the Atacama Fog Desert of northern Chile. The authors' fieldwork and observations reveal that Copiapoa are keystone plants in their habitats, with their flowers, fruits, seeds, cortical tissues, and even necrotic tissues being the base of the food chain for many endemic Chilean insects that often have mutualistic relationships with these cacti. It is therefore critically important that Copiapoa habitats are preserved for the future. Aside from the obvious threat of climate change and drought in northern Chile, other conservation issues such as habitat destruction and illegal extraction of Copiapoa still need to be addressed.","PeriodicalId":111988,"journal":{"name":"Cactus and Succulent Journal","volume":"51 1","pages":"248 - 271"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139240402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ISI program has had a long-standing association with The Huntington since shortly after its inception in 1958. The program was adopted in its entirety by The Huntington in 1989 and furthers the institution’s dedication to aesthetics, education, conservation and scientific study. The aim of International Succulent Introductions is to propagate and distribute new or rare succulents to collectors, nurseries and institutions. In keeping with sound conservation practices and consistent with CSSA policies, fieldcollected plants are not sold. We offer only propagated seedlings, grafts, tissue-cultured plants and rooted cuttings produced under nursery conditions without detriment to wild populations. Income is used solely to support this program. This list, with additional photos, is also accessible on the internet at http://media.huntington.org/ISI/catalogintro.html. The Huntington is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) organization. Charitable contributions to the Huntington’s ISI program are welcome. To lovers of succulents, Namaqualand is even more enticing as it contains one of the highest concentrations of succulent plants in the world. Most of my previous trips to South Africa were concentrated in the summer rainfall regions of the eastern parts of the country, although I had ventured as far as Namaqualand once or twice (too late or too early for much bloom: timing is everything for peak bloom here). Hearing that Namaqualand had experienced good winter rains in 2022 and then having an extraordinary opportunity to participate in a tour there was simply too irresistible an offer. As founder and owner of Mesa Garden in New Mexico, Brack’s focus on building collections from seed is now recognized as a cornerstone of successful conservation programs. His many innovative practices for germinating seeds are widely practiced. In the context of today’s rampant poaching and warming climate, Brack’s techniques and philosophy serve as a model for preserving the world’s botanical diversity. Driving Brack’s expansive professional career have been an enduring passion for plants, an adventurous and curious soul, extreme attention to detail, and an inexhaustible work ethic, a combination of traits that can be traced back to his upbringing.","PeriodicalId":111988,"journal":{"name":"Cactus and Succulent Journal","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122260769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
