Among others, the increase in the number and heterogeneity of network infrastructure, the complexity of devices and protocols and the explosion in traffic demands are only “few” of the issues that network operators should take into consideration. Conventional network management schemes lack in automation, harmonization and efficiency, in order to handle such chaotic environments. Autonomic network management targets the governance of the behavior of autonomic and contemporary network entities, based on network operator requirements and business goals. Policies are considered as an effective tool for accomplishing a desirable high level control. In this paper, we present a novel policy-based network management framework, while enriching its ontology-oriented inference engine with collaborative filtering capabilities thus achieving the acceleration of the decision making process.","PeriodicalId":111472,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 19th International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117194282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Being interested to exploit MPEG-DASH paradigm for transferring video services over interactive digital broadcasting networks, we discuss, in this paper, how these broadcasting networks can provide QoE fairness to their MPEG-DASH users. In more detail, we propose the elevation of the broadcasting networks' edge routers to QoE fairness nodes able to enforce any QoE fairness policy to their MPEG-DASH users. Towards validating our approach, we integrated in each edge router a Traffic Shaper, to be used as a QoE fairness module, and run several experiments that verified the QoE unfairness issue, besides revealing ours solution capacity to eliminate it.","PeriodicalId":111472,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 19th International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125040655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is of significance to consider minimum sum power (Min-Power), subject to meeting specified user's demand, since mobile users typically employ battery-powered handsets. In this paper, we prove that Min-Power is polynomial-time solvable for interleaved SC-FDMA (IFDMA). Then we propose a channel allocation algorithm for IFDMA, which is guaranteed to achieve global optimum in polynomial time. We numerically compare the proposed algorithm with optimal localized SC-FDMA (LFDMA) for Min-Power. The results show that LFDMA outperforms IFDMA in the maximal supported user demand. When the user demand can be satisfied in both LFDMA and IFDMA, LFDMA performs slightly better than IFDMA. However Min-Power is polynomial-time solvable for IFDMA whereas it is not for LFDMA.","PeriodicalId":111472,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 19th International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123425095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, we consider a heterogeneous mobile networks topology with coexisting macrocellular and microcellular Base Stations (BSs) and propose two algorithms to optimally determine the operational mode of BSs under various traffic load conditions and achieve overall energy consumption minimization for efficient mobile network operation. Different traffic loads are investigated via simulation campaigns and our proposed optimization schemes yield quite satisfactory energy saving gains compared to Full Operational Topology (FOT) networks in all scenarios of interest examined.","PeriodicalId":111472,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 19th International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115091521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The IEEE 802.21a standard complemented the original specification in an important direction, namely the provision of security mechanisms for handover-related signaling messages and services. However, although the new standard gives a detailed description of the incorporated security mechanisms and of the relevant changes to the structure of the signaling messages, it does not discuss the pros and cons of each security method, with respect to their energy efficiency. This work attempts to fill this gap, by providing simple yet descriptive analytical expressions for calculating the additional energy expended in mobile devices under handover due to the 802.21a security enhancements. These expressions are validated through measurements on a prototype heterogeneous network testbed. The results provide useful hints when choosing the appropriate protection method in devices with tight energy constraints.","PeriodicalId":111472,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 19th International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130256607","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address these challenges, ICT have recently demonstrated their potential in providing fall prevention solutions to the elderly. KINOPTIM project contributes towards this direction by developing a homecare solution that addresses falls in a preventive manner through training of seniors with the support of an interactive gaming platform. On top of the home care solution, KINOPTIM will implement a telemonitoring system that will follow the person's mobility status over time, and a Medical Business Intelligence (MBI) system will assist medical experts to diagnose impairments and related fall risks, to decide for proactive or active interventions. This paper presents the high level architecture of the KINOPTIM platform, comprising the game technologies as well as the sensing and decision support functionalities provided by the platform.","PeriodicalId":111472,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 19th International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114077107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We study the downlink coverage probability of relay-aided cellular networks, where the positions of mobile terminals (MTs), relays and base stations (BSs) are modeled as three independent homogeneous Poisson point processes (PPPs). Three association criteria with different implementation complexities are considered. Monte Carlo simulation results show that relay-aided architectures outperform their non-cooperative counterpart if the path-loss exponents of the dual-hop links are no smaller than the path-loss exponent of the direct link. In addition, it is shown that cell association criteria based on the highest average received power of the intended link may not guarantee the best performance for some network deployments.","PeriodicalId":111472,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 19th International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128190029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Besides improving these systems a logical next step is to collect and correlate alerts from multiple systems distributed across organizations. The idea is to leverage a joint effect of multiple monitoring systems to build a more robust and efficient system, ideally, lacking the shortcomings of the individual contributing systems. This paper presents an analysis of alert reports gathered from several such detectors deployed in national research and education network (NREN). The analysis focuses on the correlations of reported events in temporal domain as well as on the correlations of different event types.","PeriodicalId":111472,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 19th International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130381540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Towards this end, we derive a closed-form upper bound of the Bit Error Rate (BER) per source of Analog Network Coding when the optimal maximum-likelihood (ML) detector is employed. Based on this framework, we mathematically prove that as either the number of sources or the number of relays or the modulation order increases, the possibility of Analog Network Coding being more energy efficient than TDMA increases as well. These findings are substantiated by means of Monte Carlo simulations.","PeriodicalId":111472,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 19th International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132994194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, from all established and emerging applications, priority will be given to those amongst them that target problems pertinent to efficiency in health care delivery that is also associated with increased costs tantalizing contemporary National Health Systems (NHS) not only in Europe but globally. In this field, WSN4QoL is a Marie Curie project which involves academic and industrial partners from three EU countries, which aims to propose new Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs)-based technologies to meet the specific requirements of pervasive healthcare applications. This paper focuses on presenting a protocol stack architecture designed to support the solutions proposed in that project to enhance energy efficiency.","PeriodicalId":111472,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 19th International Workshop on Computer Aided Modeling and Design of Communication Links and Networks (CAMAD)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122327666","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
