It tests user-designed modules, which are wrapped to Web services and deployed into a Web services container. Risk-resilient strategies are used for job scheduling. A case study of two biometrics recognition processes in voiceprint and face illustrates the process. The biometrics grid could benefit academic collaborations and improve biometric data sharing, as well as enhance biometric systems' efficiency in scientific research and commercial applications.","PeriodicalId":111285,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Distributed Systems Online","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121585767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We established a two-year vocational-training program for future Linux cluster administrators. Unfortunately, CCC has temporarily suspended its HPC degree program owing to a lack of students. The dot-com bust caused a downturn in all high-tech fields, particularly in Northern California. Further complicating matters is the lack of a consistent job title for cluster administrators, which makes it hard to point people to available jobs. Consequently, students don't know how bright a future the HPC job field has, and only a few students seek HPC training.","PeriodicalId":111285,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Distributed Systems Online","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126632489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With rising industry demand and career opportunities, more and more universities are offering graduates ubiquitous computing courses in addition to classical computer science curricula, such as mobile computing and wireless sensor networks. Here, I outline a graduate-level ubiquitous computing course I taught for final-year master's and first-year doctoral students in Finland at Abo Akademi University in 2006. Finland - the home of Nokia, the world's largest mobile phone maker - has more mobile devices per person than any other country, and its students are very interested in ubiquitous computing technologies. The experiences gained and lessons learned are a good source of information and reference for other educators in this field.","PeriodicalId":111285,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Distributed Systems Online","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123671204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
