Host and network exploitation techniques that used to be discussed in \"underground\" forums are now featured in book series from No Starch Press, Syngress, and other publishers. Furthermore, they've become standard training for security practitioners - see, for example, the SANS Institute's Security 504: Hacker Techniques, Exploits, and Incident Handling course (http://www.sans.org/training/courses.php). It is now beyond doubt that the hacker community has developed efficient techniques for analyzing, reverse engineering, testing, and modifying software and hardware that challenge their college and graduate-school-educated peers. These techniques have let the community substantially contribute to the state of the art of practical computer security. Many academic researchers recognize that marginalizing the hacker community would be a mistake, and increasing numbers of industry and government security practitioners attend hacker conferences such as DefCon (http://www.defcon.org) and Black Hat (http://www.blackhat.com). In fact, the US Military Academy and the US Naval Academy supported their students' participation in computer-security-related competitions at ShmooCon (http://www.shmoocon.org) and DefCon, respectively.","PeriodicalId":111285,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Distributed Systems Online","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128988119","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Java 2 Enterprise Edition application servers are complex software systems, usually implemented as assemblies of wrapped legacy parts, with each part providing a particular service. In addition, owing to the increasing number of Internet users, application server providers must improve their servers' performance and availability. Consequently, J2EE application servers are generally deployed in distributed environments, such as clusters. J2EE server administrators generally adopt ad hoc and script-based tools for configuration and deployment, but these tools can introduce many errors during deployment and execution. Indeed, configuration and deployment are the main sources of failure in Internet services. Furthermore, for Web-based applications, ensuring continuous service for a certain service-level agreement regardless of external events is important and requires the hosting servers to support dynamic reconfiguration. Moreover, it should be possible to dynamically update the server's code. However, existing open source J2EE servers don't allow for such reconfigurations. In this paper, we demonstrate how a simple reengineering of JOnAS can address these deployment and dynamic-reconfiguration issues. We also describe a deployment system that offers on-demand deployment of distributed systems and allows for dynamic reconfigurations.","PeriodicalId":111285,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Distributed Systems Online","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115344289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
