The fibrillin-1 gene mutation alone leads to impaired fibrillin-1 function common to Marfan syndrome. The aim was to study for the first time the potential effects of atherosclerosis and vulnerable plaques in mouse eye and spontaneous retinal vessel occlusions in these mice.Methods: Apolipoprotein E-deficient and fibrillin-1 mutated mice (ApoE-/-/Fbn1C1039G+/-) were used for the study. ApoE-/- littermates served as controls. Optical coherence tomography and fluorescein angiography were used to study the retina and retinal vessels before and after the 12-week high-fat diet. Series of staining were performed to study morphology, apoptosis, glial fibrillary acidic protein activation, collagen formation, inflammatory cell infiltration and drusen formation.Results: No pathological changes were found in hypercholesterolemic ApoE-/-/Fbn1C1039G+/- mice in imaging studies nor in the histological stainings. There was neither abnormality in the retinal morphology nor any detectable biomarkers.Conclusion: ApoE-/-/Fbn1C1039G+/- mice did not present the ocular signs of Marfan syndrome.12-week high-fat diet is not sufficient to induce retinal vessel occlusion on 20 to 23 weeks old mice. This indicates that the mechanistic background of retinal vessel occlusion is more complex.","PeriodicalId":110594,"journal":{"name":"Current Trends in Ophthalmology","volume":"268 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133731953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The number of incisions made in each chalazion was also examined as the author had developed an impression over the years that a better success rate was achieved with more than one incision. Using 3 vertical incisions, the 7.6% failure rate is considerably lower than previous studies in the literature in which only one incision was undertaken. This case series also supports a practical pragmatic approach as to how to manage failure of incision and curettage and questions the need for routine diagnostic biopsy to exclude ocular sebaceous cell carcinoma after first failure in incision and curettage.","PeriodicalId":110594,"journal":{"name":"Current Trends in Ophthalmology","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132440030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Her Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) the following day was 20/15 OD and 20/60 OS. A ringshaped yellowish reflex surrounding the central fovea was observed in the left eye on a fundus photograph, and the inner segment Ellipsoid and Interdigitation Zones (EZ and IZ, respectively) were defective at the foveola on Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Ten days later, her BCVA became 20/25 OS. Although defects in the EZ and IZ remained, the fundus abnormality became obscured. Forty days later, her BCVA returned to 20/20 OS, her fundus findings appeared normal, and both EZ and IZ demonstrated nearly normal appearances. Although transient macular damage has been reported in young Patients after prolonged gazing at a computer game display, to our knowledge, this is the first report presenting similar OCT-detectable macular damage that is likely related to Smartphone usage. Since Smartphone’s have become exclusively popular all over the world among not only adults but also younger population, ophthalmologists should be aware that macular damage can occur in Smartphone users, particularly after gazing at the display under dim background illumination. Although such cases are rare, the damage is usually transient and spontaneously recovers after reducing the duration of Smartphone usage.","PeriodicalId":110594,"journal":{"name":"Current Trends in Ophthalmology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131864095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They were treated with either diquafosol or rebamipide for 1 week, and treated for an additional week after switching to the other eye drop. This treatment was repeated one more time. Then, the patients were treated with one of either eye drop for an additional 4 weeks. Patients’ preferences for eye drops were investigated using a questionnaire at the end of 4-week treatment. To confirm the effectiveness of the treatments, objective and subjective assessments including superficial punctate keratopathy (SPK) score, TBUT measurement, and Dry Eye-Related Quality-of-Life Score (DEQS) were performed at baseline, and 4 and 8 weeks.Results: SPK score was improved after treatment (P < 0.05). Patients tended to prefer diquafosol (64.7%) torebamipide (35.4%), however there was no significant difference in two eye drops (P = 0.23). Bitterness was reported significantly more frequently after rebamipide administration (66.7%) than diquafosol administration (5.6%, P < 0.001). The diquafosol bottle was considered “ease to use” by a larger percentage of users (94.1%) as compared to the rebamipide bottle (58.8%, P < 0.05). The effectiveness of the signs and symptoms were similar for both groups at 8 weeks.Conclusions: Diquafosol and Rebamipide were both effective in treating dry eye and 65% of the patients choose Diquafosol. Bitterness after administration and ease to use of the bottles seemed to affect the patients’ preferences for these two eye drops.","PeriodicalId":110594,"journal":{"name":"Current Trends in Ophthalmology","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126957887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In infants with persistent avascular retina without pre-threshold disease, 54.2% continued examination > 50 weeks PMA, 23.3% discontinued at 50 weeks PMA, 3.2% preferred prophylactic laser and 5.1% fluorescein angiography and laser prior to concluding exams. 46.3% of physicians preferred IVB as primary monotherapy, 37.3% laser, and 16.4% both IVB and laser in type 1 ROP. Of those who preferred IVB, 20.4% concluded examination at ? 55 weeks PMA, whereas 79.6% continued evaluation >55 weeks PMA (60 to ? 80 weeks). Of those who preferred both IVB and laser, 50.6% concluded examination at ? 50 weeks PMA, whereas 49.4% continued > 50 weeks (60 to ? 80 weeks). 21.1 % of respondents reported recurrence with IVB and 8.8% with dual therapyConclusions: Treatment preferences and conclusion of examination in ROP varies considerably without and with treatment. Immunohistochemistry was used to identify the retinal sites and expression patterns of D-serine and serine racemase in the rat retina. The concentrations of free D-serine and L-serine in the retina were measured by two-dimensional high-performance liquid chromatography. Retinal cell death was investigated by Immunohistochemistry.Results: D-serine was expressed on the retinal ganglion cell layer in the retinas of rats with ocular hypertension. A serine racemase was specifically expressed in the retinal ganglion cells. The ratio of free D-/L-serine in the retinas with ocular hypertension was higher than that in the retinas with normal tension. Annexing-V-positive cells were observed in the retinal ganglion cell layer in the retinas of the rats with ocular hypertension, and these cells were also co-localized with D-serine expression.Conclusions: We suspect that the up-regulation of serine racemase expression induced by ocular hypertensionleads to an increase in free D-serine converted from free L-serine in retinal ganglion cells and that retinal cell death is associated with D-serine expression.","PeriodicalId":110594,"journal":{"name":"Current Trends in Ophthalmology","volume":"86 16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131019016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, one can hypothesize that medical students under academic evaluation, with acute emotional stress, could suffer changes in tear quality, which was the purpose of this study.Methods: The prospective, longitudinal, observational and analytic study was performed at Faculty of Medical Sciences-Campina Grande, Paraíba, Brazil. It was randomly recruited, 80 (5.8%) students, 42 (52.5%) women and 38 (47.5%) men, with ages ranging from 18 to 42 year-old (22.9 ± 4.9 years), median of 21.5 years. Exclusion criteria include all students who presented with any disease or condition that could affect the tear quality. The BUT was assessed before and after 35 days of academic examination. The continuous parameters were expressed by their mean ± standard deviation. Wilcoxon test was used for assessing difference between means. P ≤ 0.05 was used for rejecting the null hypothesis. The research was approved by the Institutional Ethics Committee.Results: Stress was present in all students immediately of taking academic evaluation; ranging as follows: mild-15 (18.7%); moderate-41 (51.3%), and severe 24 (30.0%) (How was this stress assessed to arrive at mild, moderate and severe). The mean BUT in the right eye was significantly higher after the 35-day interval (before 8.5 ± 3.1 seconds versus 9.6 ± 3.0 seconds - p = 0.0016). Similarly, the mean BUT in the left eye was significantly higher after the 35-day interval (before 8.5 ± 3.1 seconds versus 9.4 ± 2.9 seconds - p = 0.0053.Conclusion: There was a decrease in the BUT immediately before academic evaluation. However, there was nocorrelation or association with the stressful parameters caused during this period with the BUT measurements,including emotional stress levels, night sleep time before academic examination. It was observed a tendency to return to BUT baseline parameters, later 45 days after knowledge of student performance in the academic examinations.","PeriodicalId":110594,"journal":{"name":"Current Trends in Ophthalmology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129220872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
