Jayarao","doi":"10.36899/japs.2022.1.0400","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.36899/japs.2022.1.0400","url":null,"abstract":"Listeriosis, caused by Listeria monocytogenes (Lm), has zoonotic implications and has a wide host range. It has unique potential to cross blood brain barrier and placental barrier which results in encephalitis, meningitis and abortions. Initially only animals were considered as its victim but later on it emerged as an important food borne human pathogen and so far, it has been isolated from various food samples and environmental samples too. The current study is based upon the determination of genome-based distribution of L. monocytogenes ( hly gene) in various soil samples collected from selected districts of Punjab province, Pakistan. The selection of the districts was based on historical information about simultaneous prevalence of the soil borne human and animal diseases... A total of 970 soil samples were processed independently by real-time PCR and an association between occurrences in soil was correlated to several categorical variables. The genome was detected in 17 samples (1.75%, 95 % CI: ±0.5), each originating from different location across districts under study. A greater number of positive soil samples for Lm genome were detected in district Attock followed by Sheikhupura, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Sahiwal and Lahore. The odds for occurrence of Lm were more at places near to water sources [2.85, CI:95% (0.9256, 8.831) p=0.05] and having more than 1000 animals per village [3.32, CI:95% (1.077, 10.27) p=0.02]. In conclusion, DNA of Lm is distributed in the soil of several districts of Punjab and fodder grown on such contaminated soil could be a potential risk factor to health of both animals and humans. Future studies are required to identify a causal relationship between presence of bacterium in soil to seroconversion in animal and human and prevalent serotypes across a wide geographical range across Pakistan.","PeriodicalId":10891,"journal":{"name":"Day 2 Thu, February 24, 2022","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83391976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study was carried out to investigate whether periodic salinity fluctuations can influence the expression of some phenotypic traits (e.g. survival, standard length, tail length, body area, and body colour) in stripped dwarf catfish ( Mystus vittatus ). Ninety medium sized stripped dwarf catfish were collected and reared up to three months dividing into two treatments such as control treatment (CT) and salinity treatment (ST). The CT fish were reared at 0 ppt during the experimental period, while ST fish were reared at 10 ppt in first month, 0 ppt in second month and 10 ppt again in third month. There were significant effects of salinity on survival and the overall body colour of stripped dwarf catfish during the experiment. The results showed a significant difference in the tail length between the two treatments in which the average of tail length with the ST throughout the experimental period was significantly smaller than the CT. The study also found that the ST fish were significantly less bright and highly fade in appearance compared to the CT fish. The overall results have revealed an important role of periodic salinity fluctuation on the expression of some phenotypic traits in stripped dwarf catfish and thereby, underpinned the evolution of different phenotypic traits in many animals and also their plasticity as result of environmental stress in nature.","PeriodicalId":10891,"journal":{"name":"Day 2 Thu, February 24, 2022","volume":"103 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80775374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, mango slices were dried to enhance its shelf life. Edible coating and osmotic dehydration were used as pretreatment followed by hot air dying as a final drying. Effects of coated and control osmotically dehydrated mango slices were investigated for shelf-life stability. Mango slices were coated by aloe-pectin solution (50% v/v aloe vera gel + 0.5w/v of pectin + 0.2w/v of calcium in distilled water) then osmotically dehydrated by immersing in 55% sucrose solution for 3 hours, and further dehydrated by hot air dryer at 65 ̊C. Samples were stored for 4 months and analyzed regularly after one month interval for shrinkage, rehydration, color change, texture and microstructure. At the end of storage, maximum shrinkage % of 45.18 and 42, rehydration ratio score of 1.7 and 2.87, mold and yeast count of 3.69 and 1.72 Log CFU/g was observed in control and coated samples, respectively. The results of present study revealed that during storage, coated samples maintained better microstructure, texture and color parameters as compared to control samples.","PeriodicalId":10891,"journal":{"name":"Day 2 Thu, February 24, 2022","volume":"115 20 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84201644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
