Descriptors must be distinctive enough to allow for correct localization while still offering low matching complexity and short descriptor size for real-time applications. MPEG Compact Descriptor for Visual Search is a low complexity image descriptor that offers several levels of compromises between descriptor distinctiveness and size. In this work we describe how these trade-offs can be used for efficient loop-detection in a typical indoor environment.","PeriodicalId":108577,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 17th International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP)","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134510403","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This type of artefact appears even when light compression is applied. In this paper, an analysis on using fine quantisation in areas prone to contouring artefacts is presented, targeting a reduction in the visibility of contouring artefacts. A technique to further reduce the visibility of contouring artefacts by modifying the rate-distortion costs considered during the video encoding process is also proposed. Contouring artefacts can be prevented or significantly reduced with these techniques with a low impact in terms of rate-distortion performance for high target quality needed for UHD broadcasting.","PeriodicalId":108577,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 17th International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP)","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122742572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this approach, a multi-pitch input spectrum is represented by a sparse linear combination of a large number of spectrum exemplars in a given dictionary. By estimating the sparse weight vector and identifying its non-zero elements, a set of possible pitch candidates can be found. This study is focused mainly on the construction and optimization of the exemplar dictionary. A complete dictionary is first built from single-note piano music. We propose to perform prescreening on the dictionary by which the exemplars of the notes belonging to certain octaves and chromas are excluded during the subsequent estimation. Experimental results show that the pre-screening process not only helps in reducing the computational complexity, but also leads to more accurate pitch estimation. On the formulation of sparse estimation problem, we introduce a probabilistic assumption on the estimation error, such that the estimation is converted into a constrained convex quadratic programming problem. We also propose to use spectral combination as a new scheme of pitch determination from the estimated sparse weights.","PeriodicalId":108577,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 17th International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128525073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We first develop an analytical model to identify and quantify the power inefficiency in mobile video streaming, due to the mismatch between HTTP request schedule and the radio resource control schedule. Based on the analytical model, we develop a low power video streaming mechanism by employing the server push technology available in the HTTP/2 protocol. We implemented the server push-based low power streaming mechanism in an HTTP DASH video streaming prototype involving mobile devices and the 4G/LTE cellular network. Our experiments show significant battery power savings on mobile devices using our server push strategy.","PeriodicalId":108577,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 17th International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP)","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127944947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a novel vector representation of emotion flow for popular music. It exploits the repetitive verse-chorus structure of popular music and connects a verse (represented by a point) and its corresponding chorus (another point) in the valence-arousal emotion plane. The proposed vector representation visually gives users a snapshot of the emotion flow of a popular song in an intuitive and instant manner, more effective than the point and curve representations of music emotion flow. Because many other genres also have repetitive music structure, the vector representation has a wide range of applications.","PeriodicalId":108577,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 17th International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126918880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The target bits are optimally allocated by hierarchically constructing a perceptual uniform space derived based on an SSIM-inspired divisive normalization mechanism for each group of pictures (GoP), each frame, and each coding unit (CU). The Lagrange multiplier λ, which controls the trade-off between perceptual distortion and bit rate, is adopted as the GoP level complexity measure. After the first pass compression, Laplacian based rate and perceptual distortion models are established to adaptively derive λ, and the target bits are dynamically allocated by maintaining an uniform Lagrange multiplier level through λ equalization. Within each GoP, rate control is further performed at frame and CU levels in the perceptually uniform space. Extensive simulations verify that, the proposed scheme can achieve high accuracy rate control and superior rate-SSIM performance.","PeriodicalId":108577,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 17th International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP)","volume":"209 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131421073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most existing approaches to automatic liver segmentation from CT scans use a statistical shape model (SSM) integrated with a searching algorithm to recover the deformation. However, establishing the correspondences among landmark points of training shapes for the construction of the average shape of SSM remains as a challenge due to the high variation of liver shapes in CT scans. The proposed method is a fully automatic segmentation method that combines four steps. Firstly, a test CT volume is partitioned into multiple non-overlapped sub-volumes with each of them consisting of variable numbers of consecutive slices. Secondly, we locate the cube-based liver shapes in all sub-volumes via Hough voting and dynamic programming. Thirdly, we construct the basic 3D model through a level-set framework for liver shape segmentation. Finally, to introduce neighbors statistical analysis into the above model, we deform the 3D liver shape to overcome disturbances caused by noise and inhomogeneity. The MICCAI 2007 liver segmentation challenge datasets are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Experimental results demonstrate the good performance of the proposed method in terms of segmentation accuracy and execution speed.","PeriodicalId":108577,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 17th International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP)","volume":"13 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129328189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But in practice, people usually encounter a specific stylish image and want to transfer its style to their own pictures without the external dataset. Thus, we propose a hierarchical stylization model with limited reference particularly for oil paintings. First, the edge patch based dictionary is trained to build connections between images and limited reference, then reconstruct the structure layer. Due to the highly structured property of saliency regions, the saliency mask is extracted to integrate the structure layer and the texture layer with different weights. Hence, the advantages of both sparse representation based methods and example based methods are integrated. Moreover, the color layer and the surface layer are considered to make the output more consistent with the artist's individual oil painting style. Subjective results demonstrate the proposed method produces desirable results with state-of-art methods while keeping consistent with the artist's oil painting style.","PeriodicalId":108577,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 17th International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125970618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The rigid transform between two point sets can be estimated, as long as proper correspondences are given. The accuracy of the estimated transform is mainly determined by the goodness of these matches. However, the confidence of the correspondences is weakened by the observation error. Aiming to address this challenge, the proposed solution parameterizes the pair matching confidence and improves the optimization process. Specifically, we adopt the tangent distance as error metric and introduce an iterative bootstrapped quadratic approximation method to increase the registration accuracy. Compared to the existing methods, experiments show that our method can produce a more accurate transform estimation in 2D case, and yield an acceptable result in 3D case.","PeriodicalId":108577,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 17th International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP)","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134545884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Posteriorgrams have been widely used in the research on QbE-STD. Features based on articulatory classes are known to be robust to phonemic variations. The articulatory features like voicing and place of articulation are the main distinguishing features among some plosives and fricatives. These properties inspire the study of posteriorgrams based on articulatory classes for QbE-STD. Most of the previous works based on articulatory features have defined a large number of articulatory classes making it difficult to use them directly for pattern matching. Also, most of the works have completely ignored the uniqueness of the phonemes having transitory places of articulation eg. diphthongs and approximants. These issues have been addressed in this work while carefully selecting low dimensional articulatory motivated (LDAM) posteriorgrams on the basis of detailed experiments. This work is the first to show that the articulatory based posteriorgrams can outperform the phonemic posteriorgram significantly in a stand alone way (without any support from acoustic or phonemic features) for the task of QbE-STD.","PeriodicalId":108577,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 17th International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP)","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123850538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
