In this study, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. and other intestinal parasites and their relationship with symptoms in elderly patients. Materials and Methods: The distribution of Cryptosporidium spp. and other intestinal parasites was prospectively evaluated in elderly patients admitted to different clinics of the university hospital between September 2018 and September 2019. The study group included 40 elderly patients (18 females and 22 males; mean age: 73.35 ±6.55years) with gastrointestinal complaints and a control group consisting of 44 elderly patients without gastrointestinal complaints. Stool samples were examined using wet mount, and Kinyoun acid fast staining. Results: The most frequently isolated parasites were amoeba cysts and trophozoites in elderly patients. Cryptosporidium spp. cysts were detected in 9 (22.5%) of patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, and in 13 (40.6%) of those with other complaints and in the control group. Cryptosporidium spp. cysts were found more common in those with a solid stool consistency than others with a watery stool consistency. Conclusion: Cryptosporidiosis could be a life-threatening condition in a high-risk population, such as the elderly with co-morbidities, and physicians should have increased awareness.","PeriodicalId":10748,"journal":{"name":"Cukurova Medical Journal","volume":"60 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139182949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent studies examining the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) during I/R injury in different organs have remained a matter of debate. The current study aimed to explore further the protective and underlying antiapoptotic and antioxidant mechanisms of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibition in hindlimb (HL) schemia/reperfusion (I/R)injury. Materials and Methods: Occlusion of bilateral hindlimbs for 4 h with tourniquets was carried out under anesthesia to induce I/R for 4 h in rats. Rapamycin (1 mg/kg) or saline (4 mL/kg) was injected intraperitoneally 1 h before reperfusion. Gastrocnemius muscle, kidney, and blood were collected at the end of the experiments for analysis. Muscle and kidney damages were evaluated by measuring protein expression and/or phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 4E-binding protein 1 (4EBP1), ribosomal protein S6 (rpS6), B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2), caspase-3, and Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) with NADPH oxidase level and total antioxidant capacity in tissues or sera. Results: I/R-induced organ damages were demonstrated by enhanced phosphorylation and/or expression of rpS6, 4EBP1, caspase-3, and Bax with a significant reduction in Bcl-2 accompanied by a decreased total antioxidant capacity and increased level of NADPH oxidase. Administration of rapamycin, an inhibitor mTOR, protected against I/R-mediated injuries. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the activation of mTOR signaling plays a crucial role in HL I/R-triggered organ damages presumably through the activation of apoptosis as a result of oxidant/antioxidant imbalance.","PeriodicalId":10748,"journal":{"name":"Cukurova Medical Journal","volume":"57 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139183658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: The study group comprised 65 preterm infants on respiratory support and 43 control preterm infants. The Neonatal Infant Pain Scale (NIPS) was used to evaluate pain. To determine the stress level, salivary cortisol levels were studied in saliva samples taken in the morning and evening on the 4th postnatal day. Results: In the study group, morning and evening cortisol levels of the infants were measured 8.33±5.7 ng/ml and 8.05±5.6 ng/ml, respectively. In the control group, morning and evening cortisol values of the infants were measured 1.50±0.7 ng/ml and 1.48±0.7 ng/ml, respectively. The morning and evening salivary cortisol levels of the infants in the study group were significantly higher than those of the infants in the control group. In the invasive mechanical ventilation group infants, morning and evening cortisol levels of the infants were measured 12.46±5,3 ng/ml and 12.0±5,2 ng/ml, respectively. In the non-invasive mechanical ventilation group, morning and evening cortisol values were measured 4.57±2.7 ng/ml and 4.41±2.7 ng/ml, respectively. Both morning and evening salivary cortisol levels of infants on invasive mechanical ventilation were higher than those of infants on non-invasive mechanical ventilation. Conclusion: Increased salivary cortisol levels in invasive modes indicate that intubation causes pain and stress in newborns.","PeriodicalId":10748,"journal":{"name":"Cukurova Medical Journal","volume":"5 19","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139184289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A previous CS is known to not be an absolute indication for repeat CS, and vaginal delivery (VD) (trial of labor after caesarean (TOLAC)) can occur after a CS. The aim of this study was to investigate the neonatal outcomes of TOLAC patients in Konya City Hospital. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was made of the records of all the births in Konya City Hospital between 10 August 2020 and 10 June 2022. The study included all patients with full or nearly complete cervical dilation-effacement and who had a previous CS. These patients were compared with patients who had elective CS and VD. A total of 119 patients were included in the study in 3 groups; TOLAC n:32, CS n:42, VD n:45. Results: TOLAC patients gave birth earlier and the infant birth weight (2991.25gr), length (50.66cm) and head circumference (34.09cm) measurements were found to be significantly lower than those of the other groups. The development of any problem (icterus, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), oxygen requirement, hypoglycemia, hypothermia) was determined at a significantly higher rate in the TOLAC (21.9%). Conclusion: Patients with a history of CS do not have to have a repeat CS. TOLAC can be performed in appropriate cases, but care should be taken against uterine rupture, the need for emergency CS, and adverse neonatal outcomes.","PeriodicalId":10748,"journal":{"name":"Cukurova Medical Journal","volume":"38 11","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-12-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139184358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data from studies show that the prevalence of SD is higher in individuals with obesity. Insulin resistance (IR) is a metabolic condition characterized by high levels of insulin required to balance blood glycemia, and obesity is one of its clinical manifestations. This study presents one of the first prospective studies revealing the relationship between IR and SD in the literature. Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, a total of 71 participants were included: 35 SD patients (15 males/20 females) and 36 controls (15 males/21 females). All participants were clinically evaluated for the presence or absence of seborrheic dermatitis by the same dermatologist. Parameters including HOMA-IR, insulin levels, serum lipid levels, waist circumference, and BMI were measured in both groups. Results: HOMA-IR, insulin, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, waist circumference and BMI levels were higher in SD patients compared to the control group. Significant positive correlations were found between HOMA-IR and waist circumference, BMI, diastolic blood pressure, and triglyceride levels. Conclusion: This study suggests that IR could be a new comorbid factor in seborrheic dermatitis. A substantial association was observed between SD and insulin resistance, possibly due to shared inflammatory pathogenesis. Consequently, individuals with SD should be monitored for insulin resistance-related conditions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.","PeriodicalId":10748,"journal":{"name":"Cukurova Medical Journal","volume":"22 8","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139187392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: The SwissADME tool was utilized to assess the pharmacokinetic and drug-like properties of silymarin. Molecular docking was performed to model the interaction of silymarin with molecular compounds known to play a role in the WNT/β-catenin pathway and associated with this pathway in HCC. Target proteins (AFP, PIK3CA, β-catenin, PTEN, AAT, AXIN1, GSTM1, GSK3B, PI3K3CA, GSTT1, CCND1, albumin, p53, MET, CTNNB1, and APC) were obtained from the SwissTargetPrediction database. Protein-protein interactions were obtained from the STRING and Cytoscape databases. The PASS platform was used to predict potential bioactivity properties. Results: The study data revealed that silymarin exhibited the highest binding affinity to the APC protein, with a value of -11.7 Kcal/mol. Although AXIN1 showed the least binding among the studied proteins, with a value of -7.4 Kcal/mol, this can still be considered a good binding affinity. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the potential of silymarin to inhibit the overactivation of the WNT/β-catenin pathway and identified silymarin as a potential drug candidate for HCC, beyond its hepatoprotective properties. However, further preclinical and clinical studies targeting the WNT/β-catenin pathway are required to confirm the effectiveness and safety of silymarin.","PeriodicalId":10748,"journal":{"name":"Cukurova Medical Journal","volume":"28 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139187246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Materials and Methods: In this study, 31 piezo-surgical tips were used, three for control and 28 for testing. The testing tips were equally divided into four groups with different numbers of osteotomies: the four-, 8-, 16-, and 32-osteotomy groups. The mean osteotomy duration was recorded during osteotomy. Scanning electron microscopy images of the tips in the test groups were obtained before and after osteotomy, and the wear level of the tips was measured. Results: A statistically significant increase was observed in the nano-hardness of the piezo-surgical tips depending on the number of osteotomy (for 4-use; 22.47±1.67H and for 32-use; 28.49±3.42H). The elasticity value of the testing tips was in the range of 218.55±15.74E to 241.26±10.46E, and all of the values were significantly higher than those in the control group (174.39±13.53E). As the frequency of use increased, a significant increase in surface roughness was observed (from 16.67±1.50 to 56.12±2.60). A positive correlation was found between the frequency of use and the wear level of the tips, and between the surface roughness and wear level of the tips. Conclusion: With the increase in the number of osteotomies, significant changes in the mechanical and physical properties of the piezo-surgical tips that affected their bone-cutting performance were observed.","PeriodicalId":10748,"journal":{"name":"Cukurova Medical Journal","volume":"5 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139241854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
