After trying unsuccessfully to deploy the SDR (Software Defined Radio) approach during the 2000s numbers of Wireless operators have launched several research initiatives in cloud (C-RAN, W-RAN) in the avowed purpose of taking advantage of new cloud infrastructures. For the core network, Wireless Operators will exploit new approaches such as the Overlay Networks, Software Defined Network(SDN), Network Functions Virtualisationtt-NFV), a Management plane based the Openstack, and others Chassis/Rack form based OpenCompute etc. For the Radio Access network, they will use the concept of Virtual Base Station (VBS), CPRI/OBSA. Small-cell deployments pose many challenges among which radio resource management (i.e., interference management, resource allocation, and power control) is the most significant one. The aim of this talk is to provide an overview of the radio resource management problem in small-cell networks considering OFDMA (e.g., LTE, WiMAX) femtocells, and the ongoing research on this topic. After a brief overview of the small-cell networks, we outline the major challenges in successful deployment of small-cells in next generation cellular wireless systems. In particular, the challenges related to resource allocation, co-tier/cross-tier interference management and power control are discussed. Then we provide a comprehensive overview of the different proposed techniques for resource allocation and interference management in small-cell networks. In this context, two different approaches are described: one based on clustering and semi-centralized computations, and one based on cooperative game theory. Adapting virtualization concepts to satisfy many of today's network telecommunications challenges receives more and more attention. We have developed virtual environment design, to allow the coexistence of virtual networks and their respective operators. In this Demo, we will see different scenarios showing strong potential of virtual access points. We will instantiate instantly virtual access point on demand, depending on the end-user needs: a highly secured virtualized Wi-Fi access point using 802.1X authentication, a virtualized IPv6 router AP for video streaming, a virtualized IPv4 router AP for accessing web services, a virtual PBX, etc. All the virtualized resources are running at the same time on the same mutualized physical resource. We have developed this approach to support wireless network advantages such as mobility, coverage areas, installation speed and simplicity.
