The model of 'Generative Communication' in Linda-a paradigm that has been developed for parallel computing-emphasizes the decoupling of cooperating parallel processes; thus, relieving the programmer from the burden of having to consider all process inter-relations explicitly. In many application areas, data is distributed over a multitude of heterogeneous, autonomous information systems. These systems are often isolated and an exchange of data among them is not easy. On the other hand, support for dynamic exchange of data is required to improve the business processes. Cooperative information systems enable such autonomous systems to interoperate. They are complex systems of systems which require a well designed and flexible software architecture. The Linda model had a great influence on research in parallel programming languages. Stimulated by this success, a Generative Communication Service, which offers a very flexible associative addressing mechanism based on metadata matching, has been developed for supporting interoperability of cooperative information systems. Some design patterns guided the construction of the resulting communication service that has been implemented on top of CORBA for an ODMG canonical data model.","PeriodicalId":106219,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 3rd IFCIS International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems (Cat. Different organizations dynamically group together (federation) to support complex projects requiring different competencies and coordination is fundamental. Focusing on the interaction among distinct distributed PCEs (process-centered environments), an abstraction model is proposed for the federation based on the partitioned workspace metaphor coupled with a CSP-like process-definition language. A component-based architecture is presented for the actual enactment of the model. Both the development and the enactment environments are presented and the interaction with local PCEs is discussed.","PeriodicalId":106219,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 3rd IFCIS International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems (Cat. With this timestamp ordering method, short transactions can be processed in the traditional way, as if there are no cooperative transactions, therefore not be blocked by long transactions; cooperative transactions will not be aborted when there is a conflict with short transactions, rather it will incorporate the recent updates into its own processing; and the serializabilities, among short transactions, and between a cooperative transaction (group) and other short transactions, are all preserved.","PeriodicalId":106219,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 3rd IFCIS International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems (Cat. The objectives of global transaction management are to avoid inconsistent retrieval and to guarantee the global serializability under the existence of indirect conflict which is unknown to the global transaction manager (GTM). Research has shown that it is difficult to design the global concurrency control method because of local autonomy. Hence, we adopt the characteristics of global integrity constraints so that inconsistent global schedules can be prohibited and the higher degree of concurrency can be achieved. We propose the transaction model for maintaining the global integrity constraints and define the stable global transaction that cannot have any indirect conflict between global transactions. We also propose the optimistic concurrency control method to guarantee the global serializability and logical consistency.","PeriodicalId":106219,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 3rd IFCIS International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems (Cat. These relations can be described by different kinds of transaction dependencies. The notion of transaction closure is a generalization of nested transactions providing means to describe complex activities such as transactional workflows. In this paper our main focus lies on execution dependencies for describing certain control flows among related transactions of transaction closures. In particular we consider the transitivity property for all kinds of transaction execution dependencies and discuss their relationship to other kinds of dependencies such as transaction termination dependencies. We point out that some of these dependency combinations are incompatible. As a result we present rules for reasoning about the transitivity of execution dependencies. Thus, we are able to conclude how arbitrary transactions of a transaction closure are transitively interrelated.","PeriodicalId":106219,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 3rd IFCIS International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems (Cat. {"title":"Data access services and automatic generation of cooperating interfaces","authors":"G. Moro, A. Natali, Claudio Sartori","doi":"10.1109/COOPIS.1998.706196","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/COOPIS.1998.706196","url":null,"abstract":"An important issue for the success of a database application is the effectiveness of its interface and frequently a relevant part of programming effort is devoted to the generation of interfaces. The visual programming environments reduce only partly this effort and in particular things become more complicated when data coming from different sources (different views in the same database or even views from different databases or systems) are to be related and must cooperate in the data access task. Our proposal is to define a new database access paradigm, called \"service\", including in itself the bare aspects of data access, such as browsing and selecting a tuple, and a compositional algebra for services, to automatically generate a comprehensive interface when separate services which were not designed for the cooperation, are combined. In addition, the architecture we adopt for the implementation of services is based on Java and JDBC. Services and combination of services expressed with the service algebra are automatically compiled into Java objects, allowing the rapid development of platform independent data access services. The paper formally introduces the notion of \"service\" with its semantics for data access; shows the compositional algebra for services and discusses a set of properties for this algebra which can be used when combining the components for simplification and optimization purposes, and describes the architecture for the implementation.","PeriodicalId":106219,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 3rd IFCIS International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems (Cat. The authors argue that two critical factors for the design and maintenance of applications requiring information integration are conceptual modeling of the domain, and reasoning support over the conceptual representation. In particular they present a general architecture for information integration that explicitly includes a conceptual representation of the application. They illustrate how the architecture can express several integration settings and existing systems. They provide various arguments in favor of the conceptual level in the architecture and of automated reasoning over the conceptual representation. Finally, they present a specific proposal of an integration system which realizes the general architecture and is equipped with decidable reasoning procedures.","PeriodicalId":106219,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 3rd IFCIS International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems (Cat. We propose such a mechanism, called the provider agent (PA) architecture, that protects local users by ensuring a (DBA specified) quality of service for local requests in the face of computational demands made by external requests. The PA is a general purpose solution that enhances most information systems currently available. The novelty of our approach is the combination of request profiling with load control mechanisms to improve both protection and performance, while not requiring any modifications to the underlying information system. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques with a prototype PA for a commercial DBMS.","PeriodicalId":106219,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 3rd IFCIS International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems (Cat. This is especially true when translating queries across multiple multimedia information sources that support advanced and/or similarity based queries. We propose a flexible architecture that allows users to specify a wide range of structured queries using generic and simple query constructs and connectives through a uniform query interface. These queries are translated into resource specific queries by processing rules that specify the properties of different query interfaces as well as the user preferences for evaluating queries. We show how different and multiple notions of query relaxation can be captured in this framework naturally.","PeriodicalId":106219,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 3rd IFCIS International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems (Cat. Such sources typically support HTML forms-based interfaces and search engines query collections of suitably indexed data. The data is displayed via a browser: One drawback to these sources is that there is no standard programming interface suitable for applications to submit queries. Second, the output (answer to a query) is not well structured. Structured objects have to be extracted from the HTML documents which contain irrelevant data and which may be volatile. Third, domain knowledge about the data source is also embedded in HTML documents and must be extracted. To solve these problems, we present technology to define and (automatically) generate wrappers for Web accessible sources. Our contributions are as follows: (1) Defining a wrapper interface to specify the capability of Web accessible data sources. (2) Developing a wrapper generation toolkit of graphical interfaces and specification languages to specify the capability of sources and the functionality of the wrapper (3) Developing the technology to automatically generate a wrapper appropriate to the Web accessible source, from the specifications.","PeriodicalId":106219,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 3rd IFCIS International Conference on Cooperative Information Systems (Cat.
