The paper also shows how the argument about religious security can be used both in favor of protecting such security and religious freedom, and as a goal of introducing serious restrictions on rights and freedoms. Based on the analysis, the author comes to the conclusion that it is unacceptable to use an abstract formally indefinite category of religious security as one of the criteria for the proportionality of restrictive measures. The article focuses on the reasons of why the only way found by the state is to declare the entire religious sphere potentially dangerous as well as it analyzes current legislation that aims to protect state, society, religious organization and citizens, but often leads to suppressing non-traditional religious associations under the guise of protecting religious security","PeriodicalId":105268,"journal":{"name":"Studia Religiosa Rossica: Russian Journal of Religion","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125906218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

His work “Introduction to the History of Indian Buddhism” is considered the first scientific study of Indian Buddhism. The human image of the Buddha recreated in this work formed the basis of the concept of the “historical Buddha”, which prevailed at the end of the 19th century in Buddhist studies. For a long time, Burnouf’s work was considered outdated, but an English translation published in 2010 brought this research back into scientific circulation. The article briefly describes Burnouf’s biography, examines the state of European knowledge about the Buddha and Buddhism by the beginning of Burnouf’s activity. The article analyzes the image of the Buddha created by Burnouf as a preacher of morality and early Buddhism as a simple moral teaching. It is shown that such a representation is due to the classification of texts adopted by Burnouf. The author shows the shift of his research interest from the Mahayana sutras to earlier texts. The final part of the article describes some new ideas and possibilities arising from the modern reading of Burnouf’s text, in particular, the revision of the concept of the “historical Buddha” and the genesis of the terms “Mahayana” and “Hinayana”. A hypothesis is proposed about the possible influence of the “Introduction to the History of Indian Buddhism” on L.N. This fact is proven by numerous translations of his works and reminiscences of his ideas in literary texts and memoirs of the time. Scientist, philosopher, and writer A.T. Bolotov (1738–1833) was his great admirer, follower, and popularizer. The reception of Jung-Stilling is reflected both in Bolotov’s poetic experiments and his works “The old man with his grandson, or Conversations of an old man with his young grandson” (1822), “Assumed events in the Afterlife” (1823) and “About the souls of dead people” (1823) written in the form of Platonic dialogues. Bolotov’s example makes it possible to analyze the reception of the German mystic’s ideas and their dissemination in the non-academic environment.","PeriodicalId":105268,"journal":{"name":"Studia Religiosa Rossica: Russian Journal of Religion","volume":"9 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113963914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It examines the process of religious socialization, the relationship between parents and young followers of a religious association, and ideas of the ideal family and divorce. The study finds that children from single-parent families are more likely to become members of a religious association, while children who grew up in a religious association are less interested in starting a future family. Ideal family relationships are based on the “biblical” model, which affirms the primary role of the father as the head of the family. The importance of the institution of “family” mentoring as a factor in strengthening family relationships was noted. The interchangeability of the kinship and spiritual understanding of “family” in the rhetoric of the respondents was revealed. The research is based on field material collected in 2018–2019 in Moscow.","PeriodicalId":105268,"journal":{"name":"Studia Religiosa Rossica: Russian Journal of Religion","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133527210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The focus of the study is on Russian spiritualists’ perceptions of the figure of medium as a special anthropological type, its purpose and features, as well as the specificity of Russian spiritualists’ evaluation of mediums’ activities. The basic thesis of the research – cult character of spiritualist group was created by means of a narrative about the medium as the person, sacrificing himself in the name of spiritual enlightenment of mankind and, simultaneously, allowing making over himself physical “violence”, consisting in an establishment over him total control. The article examines the characteristics of the medium that are intrinsic to spiritualist discourse, through which the notion of the medium as a victim was constructed. The spiritualist cult was shaped by the transfer of spiritualist guilt to the medium, which was to some extent facilitated by the widespread understanding of the medium as a sacrifice for the social unity.","PeriodicalId":105268,"journal":{"name":"Studia Religiosa Rossica: Russian Journal of Religion","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123268764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This process anticipated the usage of images to convey mythological content on the Middle Kingdom coffins. During the V dyn. glimpses of transformation of cult images began to emerge. Along the “realistic” depiction of the funerary cult some compositions started to refer to mythological consequences of its successful implementation. Following J. Assmann we can say that the “sacramental explanation” of the ritual action was thus incorporated in the composition of cult images. The article investigates the problem of mythological interpretation of a distinct type of ritual implement – libation basin. Initially its function was instrumental, namely to accept the sacrificial substances. During the IV dyn. it was as well interpreted as a lake, but in literature one can also find its mythological interpretation as the eternal waters of Nun. To delineate more sharply the boundaries of possible mythological interpretation, the author refers to the term “constellation” proposed by J. Assmann. In this perspective the similarity between verbal and visual texts could be confirmed by identity of the characters, as well as of the attributes of their interaction. Along these lines it is argued that the closest textual parallel to the libation basins is to be found in the group of utterances associated with the arrival of the deceased to the Fields of Offerings, to the butler of god Ra. The latter can be the personification of the flood and water abundance Agebi.","PeriodicalId":105268,"journal":{"name":"Studia Religiosa Rossica: Russian Journal of Religion","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123711061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
