TEWS is a warning system for reducing the consequences of a tsunami. A successful TEWS requires that i) people are aware of the risk, ii) people are prepared to evacuate and iii) the TEWS is working properly. This study aims to develop a framework with key quality indicators for technical, social, and governance maintenance of a TEWS, emphasizing the chain of activities from tsunami detection to evacuation. The framework is extended to novel indicators involving memory keeping and evacuation signage. The TEWS etsablished in Patong, following the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster 2004, is used as a pilot case study to test the framework related to technical and social maintenance by conducting a retrospective long-term analysis years 2005–2022. Data is collected from research and news articles 2005–2022, as well as field observations of Patong in 2022. The result shows that during these years there have been several events and actions that highlight both problems and positive developments related to technical and social maintenance of the TEWS. Because tsunamis are fast occurrences, dependable TEWS are vital.","PeriodicalId":10464,"journal":{"name":"Cogent Engineering","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-08-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46181117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mixtures of clayey earthen materials and 0%, 33%, 50%, and 67% of fermented RH of the total volume of the mixture are studied to assess their physicomechanical and durability properties. The RH is previously fermented separately in water for the periods of 2, 3, and 3 weeks. The pastes obtained after mixing the clayey earth material and fermented RH were used to mold 4 × 4 × 16 cm3 test specimens. The specimens were dried under ambient laboratory conditions and 35 HR) for 21 days before their characterization. The clay earthen material mainly contains silt (51%), clay (24%), sand (23%), and gravel (3%). It has a liquidity limit, plasticity index, and methylene blue value of 32%, 20%, and 2.66, respectively. The results show that apparent density, linear shrinkage, resistance to compression, and the thermal conductivity of the plaster specimens, respectively, decrease from 1.88 to 1.07 g/cm3, 4.52 to 0.83%, 3.88 to 0.82 MPa, and 0.87 to 0.05 W/m.K with increasing volumetric content of RH from 0% to 67%. Moreover, the resistance to abrasion increased. The resistance to capillary water absorption and water erosion was deficient for the content of RH above 50%. The mixture containing up to 33% of RH allows to improve engineering performances and reaches acceptable durability and would therefore be useful for coating adobe walls.","PeriodicalId":10464,"journal":{"name":"Cogent Engineering","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-08-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43633185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, a structured survey was developed, and the collected data were subjected to descriptive statistics and non-parametric assessment to evaluate differences among groups. A total of 586 participants were considered in this study, of which 80% had difficulties in recognizing contemporary art, 60% continued to associate it with beauty and 75% acknowledged that they do not understand art or are indifferent to it. The age, education, and urban context of the respondents were factors that influenced levels of knowledge and acceptance of civil engineering work as art, with a clear positioning of architecture as the standard-bearer of its aesthetics. When addressing surveyed interpretation of images, frequency of visits to cultural venues favours the perception of contemporary works of art, while most selected civil works were designed by engineers, which shows that aesthetics and design don’t have to be assigned to other professionals. The vast majority of the participants agree with the notion that engineering enables trust, while about a third of the participants disagree with the idea that art dominates science in engineering work. Finally, there is a broad perception among participants that engineering works can be elevated to a new form of art.","PeriodicalId":10464,"journal":{"name":"Cogent Engineering","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-08-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43882801","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A study conducted by the Swiss organization IQAir indicated that 22 of the top 30 most polluted cities in the world are in India. This creates the problem of air pollution, which is very relevant to India as well. Exposure to air pollutants has both acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) impacts on health. Among the major air pollutants, particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) is the most harmful, and its long-term exposure can impair lung functions. Pollutant concentrations vary temporally and are dependent on the local meteorology and emissions at a given geographic location. PM2.5 forecasting models have the potential to develop strategies for evaluating and alerting the public regarding expected hazardous levels of air pollution. Accurate measurement and forecasting of pollutant concentrations are critical for assessing air quality and making informed strategic decisions. Recently, data-driven machine learning algorithms for PM2.5 forecasting have received a lot of attention. In this work, a spatio-temporal analysis of air quality was first performed for Hyderabad, indicating that average PM2.5 concentrations during the winter were 68% higher than those during the summer. Following that, PM2.5 modelling was done using three different techniques: multilinear regression, K-nearest neighbours (KNN), and histogram-based gradient boost (HGBoost). Among these, the HGBoost regression model, which used both pollution and meteorological data as inputs, outperformed the other two techniques. During testing, the model acquired an amazing R2 value of 0.859, suggesting a significant connection with the actual data. Additionally, the model exhibited a minimum Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 5.717 μg/m3 and a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 7.647 μg/m3, further confirming its accuracy in predicting PM2.5 concentrations. In our investigation, we discovered that the HGBoost3 model beat other PM2.5 modelling models by having the lowest error and the highest R2 value. This study made a substantial addition by incorporating the spatiotemporal relationship between air pollutants and meteorological variables in predicting air quality. This method has the potential to improve the creation of more precise air pollution forecast models.","PeriodicalId":10464,"journal":{"name":"Cogent Engineering","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":1.9,"publicationDate":"2023-08-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42261446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
