For composite materials, the cost associated with this approach is high because of the numerous parameters of consituent properties, geometry and architecture involved. Alternative approach is to characterize and analyze damage and its evolution, all of which belong to the field of damage mechanics. This paper will review this approach and the progress made to date, and project what lies ahead.","PeriodicalId":104058,"journal":{"name":"Composites and Functionally Graded Materials","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116729397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the indentation experiments, a Vickers indenter was loaded normally against a film surface with the load being kept in the range of 2g to 300g. The contact region was observed and photographed in-situ using a high resolution, optical microscope and video imaging system, while the indentation load-history was measured with a piezo-electric force sensor attached to the indenter. The experiments have enabled detailed observations to be made of the contact damage such as the initiation of film delamination and cracks in the film; the loads at which these events occur and their evolution during loading and unloading; and the ejection of fractured film fragments from the substrate. The implications of these results to characterizing the relative failure resistance of various films and for estimating their cohesive and adhesive strengths are discussed.","PeriodicalId":104058,"journal":{"name":"Composites and Functionally Graded Materials","volume":"26 7","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120914459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These damages have a significant influence on the stress-strain behavior as well as on the ultimate strength of the composite. The failure process in a multidirectional laminate is further complicated by its dependence on ply orientations and stacking sequence Reported in this paper are the results of both analytical and experimental investigations carried out in an attempt to understand the initiation and propagation of damage in a [0/90]3S cross-ply laminate. A glass-ceramic matrix composite reinforced with silicon carbide (Nicalon) fibers is investigated at room temperature under uniaxial tensile loading. The initiation and propagation of interfacial debonding, microcracking, and fiber breaks were observed in situ, under applied load using a specially built loading device. The observed damage modes were then incorporated into existing micromechanical models to predict the laminate stress-strain behavior and compared with the experimental measurements.","PeriodicalId":104058,"journal":{"name":"Composites and Functionally Graded Materials","volume":"7 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116908351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The numerical Green’s function is sought by the eigenfunction expansion method. Computer algebra systems are essential to derive admissible functions that satisfy the given boundary conditions and manipulation of the algebra involved. Using the Green’s function for FGMs, physical fields in FGMs can be expressed semi-analytically while retaining all the relevant parameters. In addition, any change in boundary conditions such as temperature can be readily reflected without incurring the entire recalculation.","PeriodicalId":104058,"journal":{"name":"Composites and Functionally Graded Materials","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123198164","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The electrodes must resist local failures under hundreds of charge/discharge cycles, during which these fibrous networks (impregnated with active material) are subjected to swelling loads induced by the cell electrochemical reaction. These fibrous materials can be effectively used as substrates for chemical reactions because of their combinations of high surface area and high conductivity. It is shown here these materials’ conductivity can be characterized using a statistical technique in conjunction with an adaptation of a classic continuum model. These approaches are presented here, and compared with experimental data on conduction in fibrous media. The new approach provides an efficient way of predicting the gradual loss in performance observed in battery materials.","PeriodicalId":104058,"journal":{"name":"Composites and Functionally Graded Materials","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121356534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Nextel 440 fiber has a square section with two half circle attached to the opposite sides geometry. The purpose of the analyses was to find out the effect of fiber orientation and fiber spacing on the thermal residual stresses in the composite after the composite was cooled down to room temperature. It was found that high compressive stresses developed between two fibers and the absolute value of the compressive stresses increased as the two fibers approached each other. However, significant tensile stresses developed between fibers once the two fibers touched each other. The transition from compression to tension could be explained by considering the force balance between contacting fibers. It seems that the residual stresses around fibers are not significantly affected by the boundary conditions of the unit cell models. But the effect of the fibers on the thermal residual stresses of the matrix is seen all over the matrix material. The normal stresses on the fiber/matrix interface is higher when the two fibers are orientated at 45 degrees to each other, than those when the two fibers are orientated at zero degree to each other. The normal stress at the fiber/matrix interface for this fiber geometry was higher compared to that would have developed if round fibers were used.","PeriodicalId":104058,"journal":{"name":"Composites and Functionally Graded Materials","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125340317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, fracture behavior of ceramic materials is closely related to microcracking. Continuum damage mechanics is considered as a powerful theoretical framework. It is fairly difficult to obtain analytically as well as experimentally evolution equations for ceramic with microcracking. In the present study, an effective computational procedure is employed in a dynamic fracture analysis of ceramic materials with microcracking. The computational analysis is carried out for simulation of fracture experiment using notched specimens. This procedure can be used for better interpretation of experimental data as well as fracture simulations of complex structural models. Additionally, ceramic specimen is applied to the finite element analysis of microcracking near the microcrack-tip in a tensile stress field. The simulations were not only consistent with the experiments, but also revealed a possible damage mechanism which helps to explain the experimental data.","PeriodicalId":104058,"journal":{"name":"Composites and Functionally Graded Materials","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121863694","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fibers are aligned in the longitudinal direction and arranged randomly, with no overlap, in the transverse plane. The fibers and the matrix are isotropic and elastic-brittle, which allows a parametrization of a wide range of composites in terms of a stiffness ratio and a strain-to-failure ratio. The analysis is carried out numerically using very fine two-dimensional spring networks permitting simulation of the crack initiation and propagation by sequentially removing bonds which exceed a local fracture criterion. Particular attention is given to the effects of scale and geometric randomness in these composites. We consider several “windows of observation” (scales) and study crack patterns, types of constitutive responses, and statistics of the corresponding scale dependent effective elastic stiffness and strength of such composites.","PeriodicalId":104058,"journal":{"name":"Composites and Functionally Graded Materials","volume":"117 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127582609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The advantage of using pre-alloyed powders was to ensure chemical homogeneity and promote uniform density along the graded layers, and these pre-alloyed powders could be successfully used to prepare the different inter-layers of functionally graded coatings. The microstructure, density and microhardness changed gradiently in the ZrO2/NiCoCrAlY coatings. The bond strength of ZrO2/NiCoCrAlY coatings with different graded layers was measured. Results showed that for as-sprayed coatings with the same thickness, the bond strength increased with the number of graded layers. The bond strength of the coatings with five graded layers was about twice as high as that of the duplex coatings because of the significant reduction of the residual stress in the coatings. Experimental results also showed that the bond strength of as-sprayed coating increased significantly after hot isostatic press (HIP) and vacuum heat treatments, and the reason can be attributed to the densification of the microstructure, the decrease of defects in the coatings, inter-diffusion between layers and further reduction in the residual thermal stress.","PeriodicalId":104058,"journal":{"name":"Composites and Functionally Graded Materials","volume":"46 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1997-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122921468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
