The chapter finds disability embedded within the early modern structure of citizenship, which makes the laboring bodies of artisans available for conscription to war and subjects them to uncompensated loss. The chapter also shows that the theater's staging of the lame soldier departs from early modern medical discourse. Surgical texts champion prosthetic devices, such as stilts or wooden legs, both to restore the limping body's movement and, just as significantly, to enable social recognition. The chapter contends the idea that lameness equates to unremarkable difference. It presents Jeremy Collier's account of the stage at the end of the seventeenth century which laments that the theater's affective power “disables the whole Audience.” The chapter then turns to discuss this disabling as the electrifying endpoint of the theater's aesthetic experimentation with formal unfixing. It examines how the early modern theater, in a moment before the typical settles into the normative, enjoins us to a speculative theater history that defamiliarizes theatrical form.
