The experiment was set up in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Rhizomes of each germplasm were planted in earthen tub of around 95 cm upper diameter and 40 cm depth was half filled with heavy clay soils. Characterization of the germplasm was then started at vegetative stage after 30 days of planting on the basis of flower color and thirty other traits. Results indicated that the number of leaves/plant at different days after planting varied significantly and counted the highest in NN 002 (26.0 at 30 DAP, 32.0 at 60 DAP and 29.7 at 90 DAP) and the lowest in NN 012 at 30 DAP (3.0) and 60 DAP (12.7); while at 90 DAP, the lowest was recorded in NN 010 (7.3). Leaf length varied from 8.2 cm (NN 007) to 31.4 cm (NN 008); while, leaf width varied from 7.5 cm (NN 007) to 28.6 cm (NN 002). The shortest time (36 days) to flowering was found in NN 008, conversely NN 011 took the maximum number of days (46) to flowering. Flower diameter ranged from 7.1 to 16.7 cm with the minimum in NN 007 and the maximum in NN 002. In NN 001, flowers were opened at night and closed in the morning; while in others, flower were opened in the early morning and closed either in the afternoon or in the evening. The duration of flowering in the genotypes ranged from 3-4 days. The genotypes NN 007 produced the maximum suckers per plant (13.3); and NN 003, NN 005, NN 008 and NN 009 did not produce any sucker. Flowers with shorter stalk from the base (< 30 cm) in NN 006, NN 007, NN 010, NN 011 and NN 012 can be used for producing flowers in small tub or urn. The genotypes NN 001, NN 002, NN 003, NN 004, NN 007, NN 008, NN 009 and NN 001 produced abundant pollen and they can be used in breeding program for developing more variation through crossing. All the genotypes should be maintained for further evaluation and next year use.\u0000Ann. Bangladesh Agric. The present investigation was set with liverwort, Marchantia polymorpha to find out the approaches essential for hyperosmotic stress acclimation in distant land plants. The gemmae of M. polymorpha cultured in ½ B5 medium were subjected to control (0 mM NaCl) and osmotic stressed conditions led by 50 mM and 100 mM NaCl to find their morphological, biological and physiological responses. Compared to non-stress control, the thallus body of M. polymorpha showed strong growth inhibition while acclimating to hyperosmotic stress led by 100 mM NaCl. The significant reduction of chlorophyll content and tissue damage were recorded by hyperosmotic stress led by 100 mM NaCl compared to control. The negligible tissue damage and more or less similar chlorophyll content were recorded in control and by 50 mM NaCl. Further, the gemmalings showed enhanced accumulation of osmolytes proline and soluble sugar by 100 mM NaCl compared to the control which was consistent with the increased accumulation of soluble sugar by hyperosmotic stress led by 0.2 M sucrose. Hyperosmotic stress led by 100 mM NaCl showed a higher rate of electrolyte leakage in the gemmalings which was consistent with the higher amount of lipid peroxidation; malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide in the gemmalings treated with 100 mM NaCl compared to the control. However, the activity of enzymatic antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase; catalase; ascorbate peroxidase; dehydroascorbate reductase and glutathione S-transferase were greatly induced by 100 mM NaCl as compared to control. Therefore, the findings suggest that the basal land plants liverworts followed morpho-physiological alterations during acclimation to hyperosmotic stress which were crucial for the terrestrialization of land plants.\u0000Ann. Rice varieties AZ7006, BRRI dhan49, BRRI dhan52 and BRRI dhan57 exhibited the highest survival rate and minimum lodging that were associated with greater dry matter production under two weeks of submergence. Submergence affected the production of tillers, panicle and spikelets resulting lower grain yield than control. All the rice varieties except AZ7006 and BRRI dhan52 died under three weeks of submergence, where a small shoot of these varieties lived. These two varieties took longer time for producing shoot dry matter, tiller, panicle and maturity. Though they produced spikelets, but these were sterile due to low air temperature at flowering stage. Moreover, rice varieties BRRI dhan52, BRRI dhan57, BRRI dhan90 and AZ7006 under two weeks; and BRRI dhan52 and AZ7006 under three weeks of submergence acquired a combination of morphological and yield contributing response that ultimately induced a higher level of submergence tolerance. As the study revealed that BRRI dhan52 and AZ7006 were submergence tolerant, they could be incorporated in breeding program to develop rice variety for submergence tolerant up to three weeks.\u0000Ann. The experiment was conducted in a complete randomized design with three replications at Genetics and Plant Breeding lab, BSMRAU during January-February, 2016. The genotypes were varied in biochemical properties (proline, carbohydrates, chlorophyll contents etc.), dry root: shoot ratio, relative shoot dry weight and salt susceptibility index (SSI). Wide variation among the genotypes was noticed for root and shoot ratio (p<0.05). Relative shoot length varied from 29.87- 126.04 with an average of 79.29 whereas relative root length showed wide variation with a range of 20.00-300.00. Relative root dry weight (RRDW) varied from 22.06-211.43 with a mean of 79.40 and relative shoot dry weight (RSDW) ranged from 26.57-192.66 with an average of 69.29. Relative root : shoot ratio showed a range of 0.59 to 2.51. On the basis of relative performance of root-shoot dry matter, dry leaves weight, root-shoot ratio, six genotypes were found highly tolerant, seven were moderately tolerant, sixteen were moderately susceptible and six were highly susceptible to salinity stress. Based on visual observation of plants, relative shoot dry weight (RSDW), proline content, total sugar and soil plant analysis development (SPAD) value the genotypes CB031, CB035, CB003, CB023, CB026, CB028, CB013, CB030, CB014, CB024, CB019, CB020 and CB002 were selected as tolerant for further evaluation and use in breeding work.\u0000Ann. BARI Strawberry-2. The experiment was laid out in RCBD design with three replications taking into eight treatments including control viz., T1: vermicompost (324 g/pot), T2: biochar (324 g/pot), T3: AMF (324g/pot), T4: vermicompost (162 g/pot) + biochar (162 g/pot), T5: biochar (162 g/pot) + AMF (162 g/pot), T6: vermicompost (162 g/pot) + AMF (162 g/pot), T7: vermicompost (108 g/pot) + biochar (108 g/pot) + AMF (108 g/pot) and T8: control (no manure or AMF). Results of the study revealed that the highest plant height (18.40 cm), number of leaves/plant (37.00), leaf area (578.60 cm2), root length (24.50 cm), fresh and dry weight of root (30.00 g and 12.5 g) and shoot (131 g and 41.00 g), number of flowers (32.67/plant) and fruits (22.33/plant), single fruit weight (21.60 g) and yield/plant (401.99 g) were recorded in T6 treatment which was significantly superior to all other treatments. Among the fruit nutrient and mineral contents, ascorbic acid (36.20 mg/100 g), total sugar (9.10 g/100 g), Ca (11.87 mg/100 g), Mg (36.67 mg/100 g) and K (73.33 mg/100 g) were also measured maximum in T6 treatment. On the other hand, TSS (8.49 %) and water percentage in fruit (66.95 %) were found significantly higher in T7 and T4 treatments, respectively while the lowest was estimated in the control. A significant influence of T6 treatment [vermicompost (162 g/pot) + AMF (162 g/pot)] on growth, yield and qualitative characters was observed. Therefore, vermicompost and AMF combination has reflected a positive impact on good quality strawberry production. However, it needs to be investigated under the open field condition before conferring recommendation to the end users.\u0000Ann. Bangladesh Agric. KM was partially replaced with more affordable and locally available BLAE at 0, 10, 30, 50, and 70% concentrations. The spirulina was grown for 18 days at room temperature in the experimental media with artificial lighting and aeration. By replacing KM with BLAE, the 30% replacement produced the highest biomass of S. platensis. It was observed that replacing of KM by 30% with BLAE produced biomass of 1.22 g/L, which was similar to that of 1.33 g/L with control (P <0.05). However, replacing more than 50% KM by BLAE failed to promote growth relative to the control. Moreover, chlorophyll a concentrations in the control were found comparable in up to 30% of BLAE concentrations. Protein, lipid, and fiber contents of S. platensis were found to be 57.67 ± 0.58, 11.59 ± 0.28, and 7.35 ± 0.37%, respectively, in 30% replacement of KM, compared to corresponding values of 58.02 ± 1.16, 12.25 ± 0.39, and 7.53 ± 0.32%, respectively, in control KM. At the 50% KM replacement level, these values dropped to 52.65 ± 0.98, 9.97 ± 0.51, and 7.25 ± 0.29%, respectively. In conclusion, cultivation of S. platensis with BLAE up to 30% replacement of KM may be viable without undue effect on the plant’s growth, pigmentation, or biochemical makeup. \u0000Ann. The current study aimed to collect superior accessions from Bangladesh’s key moringa-growing regions through in-situ evaluation and document them by using morphological (qualitative and quantitative) traits and nutritional value in order to conserve the best indigenous landraces. Four major moringa growing regions in Bangladesh were selected namely, Chapai Nawabganj, Rangpur, Lalmonirhat and Rangamati. Twelve moringa accessions were collected during 2019-2020 based on the farmer’s preferences and morphological traits. The information on 35 quantitative and 16 qualitative aspects was analyzed using the International Plant Genetic Resource Institute (IPGRI), 2007 technique. The results demonstrated that flowering and fruiting occurred yearly in seasonal accession and three times per year in year-round accession. The flowers ranged in color from white to cream and year-round accession s MO8 and MO10 had corollas that were white with red spots. The seasonal accession’s MO1 exhibited the highest pods (97.22 g) weight, while the year-round accession’s MO12 had the lowest (45.16 g) pod weight. Leaves contained more than two times higher protein (23–34%) compared to pods (11–18%). As with nutrients, leaves had much higher levels of Ca and Fe (2137 to 3633 ppm and 252 to 424 ppm, respectively) than pods (2013 to 2875 ppm and 54- 69 ppm, respectively). Overall, the findings imply that there were numerous changes in the most important qualitative and quantitative traits as well as nutrients available in different parts of moringa. The information and analysis from these investigations could contribute to the genetic development of the species.\u0000Ann. Bangladesh Agric. The biochemical study of blood revealed that maximum total cholesterol, triglycerides and high density lipoprotein values (153.85 ± 0.44, 88.82 ± 0.37 and 105.50 ± 0.33 mg/dl) were found statistically significant (P<0.05) in soybean oil supplemented group (B2) as compared to other groups (B1, C2, C1 and A). Gross study revealed that highest mean weight of heart (0.41 ± 0.01 g) was recorded in soybean oil supplemented group (B2) significantly (P<0.05) in comparison to other experimental groups B1, C2, C1 and A. Histopathological study revealed that marked lymphocytic infiltration was found in the ventricular wall of the heart of high dose supplemented groups. So, it may conclude that dietary supplementation of soybean and canola oil have adverse effects on blood lipid profiles and heart of mice.Ann.\u0000Bangladesh Agric.
