Objective: to determine if asthmatics with overweight or obesity have alterations in Impulse oscillometry (IOS) and spirometry compared to eutrophic Method: Study carried out in children and adolescents with persistent asthma. IOS-Spirometry pre and post bronchodilator were performed successively according to ATS/ERS/SER criteria. The patients were classified as: eutrophic (AE), overweight (ASP) and obese (OA). Baseline and bronchodilator response (BR) averages were compared in spirometry and IOS with ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc analysis of variance. A power of 80% and α error of 5% were considered. Results: 559 patients were analyzed, mean age 9.2 years, 50.9% male. AE 52.4%, ASP 31.3% and OA 16.3%. Significant differences were found between OA vs AE (X5, AX, D5-20, FEV 1 /FVC, FEF 25-75 / FVC, RB FEV 1 ), and between ASP vs AE (AX, D5-20, FEV 1 /FVC). Significant differences were also found in men, not women (X5, D5-20, FEV 1 /FVC, BR FVC, BR FEV 1 ). Conclusions: Asthmatic children with overweight and obesity have a greater compromise of pulmonary function parameters measured by spirometry and IOS than asthmatics with normal nutritional status. There are gender differences in spirometry and IOS alterations.","PeriodicalId":101501,"journal":{"name":"Revista chilena de enfermedades respiratorias","volume":"454 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116410510","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are no studies in this regard in Chilean university students. Methods : This cross-sectional descriptive study measures the prevalence of consumption, risk perception, motivations and attitudes of e-cigarette use in medical students, using an online questionnaire. Results: We analyzed 354 subjects, 32.9% have used electronic cigarettes once in their lives, 6.8% in the last year and 1.1% in the last month. The mean age of onset was 18.0 ± 2.2 years. Regarding positive perceptions towards e-cigarettes: 37.1% believe they help people quit smoking; 39.7% that they are less dangerous than cigarettes and 19.0% that they are less addictive. E-cigarette use was once in a lifetime associated with tobacco use and positive perceptions toward e-cigarettes (effective for quitting smoking and less addictive than cigarettes). The main motivations for consumption were “simply because I do”, “because I like the taste”, “it was re-commended to me by a friend/family member” and “because it relaxes me”. Conclusion: It is suggested to ban the promotion of e-cigarettes as a less harmful and addictive option than cigarettes, nor as an alternative to quitting smoking, since scientific evidence is not sufficient to support such claims. This study may contribute to the prevention of e-cigarette use in young populations.","PeriodicalId":101501,"journal":{"name":"Revista chilena de enfermedades respiratorias","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129429039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: We have developed a systematic review to examine obstructive sleep apnea syndrome prevalence studies in adults in the general population. We included the cross-sectional studies and the cross-sectional components of longitudinal studies that objectively measured OSAS in adults using laboratory instruments. Forty studies out of 8,876 articles found by systematically searching in PubMed and other databases were included in this review. Results: Substantial methodological heterogeneity in population prevalence studies has been observed, determining a wide variation in OSAS prevalence defined at an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 5 events/hour, the average OSAS prevalence was 36.9% (CI95% 28.3-45.4%) in men and 24.0% (CI95% 16.3-31.6%) in women. The OSAS prevalence has increased over the time. OSAS is more prevalent in men than in women and increases with age and obesity. Excessive daytime sleepiness has been suggested as the most important symptom associated to OSAS, but only a fraction of subjects with AHI ≥ 5 events/hour report daytime sleepiness. Conclusion: The prevalence of OSAS has increased in epidemiological studies over time. The differences in reported prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea are probably due to different diagnostic equipment, operational definitions, study design and characteristics of included subjects, including effects of the obesity epidemic.","PeriodicalId":101501,"journal":{"name":"Revista chilena de enfermedades respiratorias","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127601479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method: Five electronic databases were used to conduct a qualitative diagnostic review. eligible documents from the past five years were descriptively analyzed in a data extraction table and analyzed separately the various topics found. Results: High sedentary behavior in COPD was evident in several articles, and how it relates to the severity level of the disease and mortality. the main sugges-ted strategy was to replace sedentary time with physical activity. Discussion: The results of this review are similar to what is studied in a population of varied co-morbility. However, their precedents are more specific in terms of recommendations. previous findings should be considered as a study guideline in COPD , as the pathological basis of chronic systemic inflammation is shared. Conclusion: Some findings found more frequently are the relationship of sedentary behavior with mortality and the deve lopment of greater co-morbility in COPD, in addition to intervention through physical activity, so it is necessary to deepen this topic by looking for strategies and recommendations specific to this population.","PeriodicalId":101501,"journal":{"name":"Revista chilena de enfermedades respiratorias","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133167819","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
