This model requires degradation data, which for wood poles are measurements of the residual strength around the ground line. Non-destructive measurement methods of the residual strength are well developed and enable application of this model. The method is illustrated using actual measurement records.","PeriodicalId":101495,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 37th Annual North American Power Symposium, 2005.","volume":"469 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122892133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several software tools were identified and assessed in L. Nastac, et al (2005). The fault analysis was conducted with the assessed software tools using the recorded fault data from a real circuit system. The recorded fault data including the topology and the line data with more than 1000 elements were provided by Detroit Edison (DTE) Energy for validation purposes. The effects of pro-fault loading and arcing impedance on the predicted fault current values were also investigated. Then, to ensure that the validated software tools are indeed capable of analyzing circuits with DCs, fault management and relay protection problems were developed and solved using a modified IEEE 34-bus feeder with addition of DCs.","PeriodicalId":101495,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 37th Annual North American Power Symposium, 2005.","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128751405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is imperative to provide decision makers with recommendations that account in some way the effects of energy externalities. This paper provides a summary of literature regarding the topic of distributed power generation, its related economics and environmental external costs. An externality-inclusive life cycle cost methodology is presented; and a case study assessment for a hypothetical commercial/industrial facility is used as an example.","PeriodicalId":101495,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 37th Annual North American Power Symposium, 2005.","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114218326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study is carried out for two types of faults: an FCL terminal fault and a short-line fault. The limiting impedance required for satisfactory interruption is estimated as a function of the critical mv of the circuit breaker to be associated with the FCL and the circuit parameters. For different operating voltages, the equations found in this paper show that the knowledge of the critical mv for a circuit breaker enables us to predict the magnitude of the limiting impedance needed to have a successful interruption.","PeriodicalId":101495,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 37th Annual North American Power Symposium, 2005.","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125256123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The development of the algorithm is based on distributed transmission line model and synchronized positive sequence voltage and current phasors. The method does not require fault type identification and its computational cost is very low since it does not require iterative operations. The EMTP/ATP simulator was adopted to verify the accuracy of the method. The simulation studies show that the algorithm provides a high degree of accuracy in fault location. The algorithm is independent of various fault and system conditions such as fault types, fault positions, fault path resistance, pre-fault load flows, and line shunt capacitance, etc.","PeriodicalId":101495,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 37th Annual North American Power Symposium, 2005.","volume":"463 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132311990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This technique was chosen due to the complexity associated with the highly nonlinear characteristics of the emissions involved and the dimensionality of the problem being considered. The economic-environmental problem was formulated by considering emissions either as constraints or as a second objective function of a multiobjective optimization problem. The IEEE 30 bus system was used for testing and validation purposes. The results obtained demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for solving the EED problem.","PeriodicalId":101495,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 37th Annual North American Power Symposium, 2005.","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130834721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The optimization is based on stipulated reliability criteria. Power system planning based on reliability gives rise to efficient architectures which can meet the consumer requirements with minimum system upgrade. This paper develops a technique for determining the optimal location and sizes of DG units in a microgrid, given the network configuration and the heat and power requirements at various load points. The method is based on simulated annealing. Thermal output and utilization of combined heat and power (CHP) units are considered. The paper presents the development and implementation of the method, and demonstrates its application on a six bus test system.","PeriodicalId":101495,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 37th Annual North American Power Symposium, 2005.","volume":"174 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133542763","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The methodology uses statistical bootstrapping to assign a measure of reliability to the estimated parameters using confidence levels (CL) and confidence intervals (CI). The bootstrapping technique, which is used to make a small data sample look statistically large, allows a precise estimate of transformer reliability. The proposed methodology is tested on a 28 MVA transformer for which different data sets are available. The CTs are evaluated for both cases: with and without bootstrapping and the reliability indices compared. The results show that the CI values with bootstrapping are more consistently reproducible than the ones derived without bootstrapping.","PeriodicalId":101495,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 37th Annual North American Power Symposium, 2005.","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126581562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The isolation among power system applications' databases hinders the development of a universal information infrastructure in the power system industry. To accommodate the trend of software development, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRl) Working Group on Control Center Application Interfaces has published a standard data model-common information model (CIM) in IEC standard 61970. An overview of all the models is introduced. A central CIM database is proposed in this standard for large amount of common data-sharing among applications. Accordingly, conventions and procedures used to translate the CIM specification into a workable, \"real-world\" relational database are reaching maturity. EPRI also decided to use extensible markup language (XML) in resource descriptive frame (RDF) as the format for exchanging CIM data in power system applications and databases. This paper presents an overview of the CIM data models for power systems, the CIM implementations in database design, and the data exchange format for the applications.","PeriodicalId":101495,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 37th Annual North American Power Symposium, 2005.","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124370706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The issue of non-collocated measurements is studied. The measurement of P+jQ in a line or at a bus is usually accomplished by measuring voltage and current at an appropriate point. A transducer converts the voltage and current measurement to active and reactive power which are transmitted to the state estimator. If the voltage and current measurements are not at the same point in the circuit, that is the measurements are non-collocated, error is introduced. The paper reports a way to correct for non-collocation of measurements.","PeriodicalId":101495,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 37th Annual North American Power Symposium, 2005.","volume":"210 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121928286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
