The use of different modalities of physiotherapy has recently become a routine indication in rehabilitation process in these patients. A synthesis of the evidence is made using a Systematic Review of Randomized Clinical Trials.</p></div><div><h3>Objective</h3><p>Determine whether there is scientific evidence to support the physiotherapy interventions used in the rehabilitation of patients with distal radius fractures.</p></div><div><h3>Search Strategy</h3><p>Only Randomized Control Trials (RCTs) and Controlled Clinical Trials (CCCs) were included in the search. The databases used were MEDLINE, CINAHL, Central, EMBASE, PEDro and LILACS.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>A total of 9 papers that met our eligibility criteria were selected.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusion</h3><p>There is moderate evidence that low-intensity ultrasound accelerates bone healing. Da Silva Santana","doi":"10.1016/j.rifk.2011.04.003","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.rifk.2011.04.003","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objective</h3><p>This study has aimed to determine the characteristic factors of pain in individuals with spinal cord injury.</p></div><div><h3>Materials and methods</h3><p>A total of 28 subjects with spinal cord injury, aged between 18 and 65 years, were enrolled in the study. They were interviewed and answered questions related to their pain experience from the time of injury. The interview covered aspects such as pain location, intensity, frequency, improvement and worsening factors, and impact of pain on activities of daily living.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>The results showed high prevalence (75%) of pain in the population. Chronic pain of moderate intensity characterized by patients as «burning», located in the thoracic-lumbar region, was the most prevalent. The majority (28.6%) of the patients indicated the sitting posture as the main factor of triggering and worsening the pain.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>Pain is an experience faced by the majority of individuals with spinal cord injury. The sitting position for long periods, characteristic of wheelchair users, plays an important role in the development and worsening of pain in the opinion of patients. Physiotherapy and drug treatment are among the therapeutic options for its treatment. However, the relationship between the physiotherapy approach and drug treatment of spasticity has not been well clarified in the literature yet.</p></div><div><h3>Objective</h3><p>This study has aimed to establish the influence of different drugs in the patient with spastic cerebral palsy and to propose physiotherapy intervention guidelines. Search strategy and selection of studies: a critical review was made of the literature in the main databases in English and Spanish.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>First, the definition of spasticity and how it evolves was up-dated. Next, the effects and applications of the most common drugs were analyzed. Dantas","doi":"10.1016/j.rifk.2011.04.004","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.rifk.2011.04.004","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Introduction</h3><p>Flexibility has been increasingly incorporated into discussions about physical activity and its prescription, creating the need for identifying the form of flexibility training that will increase catabolism of collagen in the locomotor system, thus forcing the conjunctive tissue to adapt and achieve the plastic phase of stretching.</p></div><div><h3>Objective</h3><p>This study has aimed to compare hydroxyproline (HP) levels among sedentary young people submitted to two types of stretchings: static stretching (SS) and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF).</p></div><div><h3>Material and methods</h3><p>The sample was randomly divided into PNF group (PG; n=15; age=22±3 years; BMI=24, 12±3.69); static stretching group (SG; n=15; age=23±4 years; BMI= 25±4.33) and control group (CG; n=15; age: 24±4 years; BMI: 23.91±3.09). Static stretching was done by passive straining during six seconds and PNF was done according to the hold-relax method. The intensity of each intervention was controlled with the Scale of Perceived Exertion in the Flexibility – PERFLEX.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>The study found satisfactory results: intra-group, in PG (Δ = 3.55mg/24h; p = 0.0001) and in SG (Δ= 3.47mg/24h; p=0.002) and inter-groups, between PG and CG (Δ = 2.43mg/24h; p = 0.018) and between SG and CG (Δ = 2.83mg/24h; p = 0.005), both favorable to the training groups. Análisis crítico de la educación de la Fisioterapia en Colombia 哥伦比亚物理治疗教育的批判性分析

Escobar Hurtado","doi":"10.1016/j.rifk.2011.04.002","DOIUrl":"10.1016/j.rifk.2011.04.002","url":null,"abstract":"<div><h3>Objective</h3><p>To analyze undergraduate education in physiotherapy in the Colombian territory based on supply, human resources, educational quality and scientific capacity.</p></div><div><h3>Material and methods</h3><p>We conducted a descriptive study of second-order research during the years 2009 and 2010. The educational offerings, admission standards and their relationship to drop-out rates and professional qualifications were analyzed. The quality of education and scientific capacity were taken from the science, technology and innovation program in Colombia.</p></div><div><h3>Results</h3><p>Of the 34 programs recorded, most were from Cundinamarca, Valle del Cauca and Santander. From 2002 to 2008, the number of students admitted increased from 10.944 to 14.500, this representing an annual increase of 10%. The average test score for quality of higher education was 97.0, this being slightly lower when compared to the years 2007 and 2008 (99.0 and 101.0, respectively). Scientific capacity indicators reveal 516 published articles. Undergraduates showed an average of five or fewer publications while there were more than 20 publications for those on the doctorate level.</p></div><div><h3>Conclusions</h3><p>An increase in the number of programs, number of admissions and low scientific capacity were reflected in this work.
